The funny thing is back in Middle and early highschool when we played Dnd (2nd E) we always drank Mountain Dew... even though I liked Coke way better! in fact I'm not really a fan of Mountain dew at all, but I've put a few cases away playing DnD for sure.
what do you think the connection is? It has to be more than just high caffiene. I mean DnD players all around Drink Mountain Dew,, or at least the pop subculture states that they do.

I used to drink mountain dew now and then... but these days I drink half a dew and i'm like "Ugh, no more thank you." Maybe the awful taste has just gotten to me.

Regular Mountain Dew sucks... Code Red is easily the most delicious beverage ever created. That purple crap isn't bad either. The new one, not the old one. If you can get your hands on some Ale81, do so. Ale81 is like ginger ale, except good. And it has an ungodly amount of caffeine.
I actually prefer drinking Crystal lite if I have a choice, but I also know three beers is not going to hurt my gaming and does a nice job on the thirst if it's nice and cold.
None of the group drink hard liquor, but that's likely because of cost. The stuff isn't cheap.

Thats the cool thing about being a dual citizen. You get to know the small differances between the U.S. and Canada. not that there is a whole lot mind you,, not as much as either party would lead the other to believe
Dr. Pepper was introduced to our market lately and I was surprised to find out that it tastes like cheap, sugared coke.
So all in all I guess you can't go wrong with simple OJ.

A buddy of mine had a bowl of them on the table one night. He had been quietly munching on them over the course of the evening. Just a few here and there.
The bad thing is he never explained what they were. I thought they were chocolate covered peanuts or something. So I grabbed a huge mittfull while he was in the john and proceeded to cram almost half a bowlfull in my gob. I quickly crunched them down so that I could try and feign ignorance of where they went when my buddy got back. The other boys laughed thinking this was funny.
When my friend got back and he noticed the large dent in his munchies he asked what was up. I'm the worst lier in the world so he quickly surmised it was me, and the rest of us laughed as he sat there looking smug. I told him his chocolate peanuts must be turning bad or something because they tasted awfully bitter.
Needless to say he was the one laughing later when I was quite literally bouncing off the walls.
Guess it didn't help that I don't drink coffee. Oh well.

Not a big Mt. Dew fan, but if the shoe fits. Ideally, some cold caffinated coffee drink will do nicely. Otherwise, it's Wendy's before gaming which means big ass Coke. Still, Mt. Dew seems to be the nectar for geek culture, specifically video/p&p gaming. The day they can make a pill...
Too much soda messes you up though. I mean, yeah, big time sugar and long periods of physical inactivity, you know, sitting in a chair playing make-believe w/ friends, will make you fat in no time. But the phosphoric acid will leach the Hell out of your bones/enamel. Hence Coke and its ilk being a nice cleaner for battery terminals and the like.
Oh, and Ale 8, yeah, they sell that stuff way South in KY...but not here. Very limited. Whenever we'd go camping in Red River Gorge, it was always a running tradition to get some; nice anti-hangover means for next day spelunking and general, uh, peripheral entertainment(s).

I live in South Africa. In South Africa, certain things are somewhat rare. Among these, are D&D and mountain dew.
However, those few of us who do play D&D here, all drink mountain dew.
I cannot think of anyone here, who I know personally, who drinks mountain dew and does not play D&D.
The people I knew in my lifetime who DID drink mountain dew but DID NOT play D&D, all ended up becoming D&D players despite swearing that they never would.

I don't toke anymore (work-related and it got old about ten years ago) but it happens ALOT around our table. If everyone involved is then it leads to a drastic difference in the gaming dynamic. The cigarette smokers are the most annoying, leaving in the middle of combat and what not.
We used to have one guy who would show up half in the bag and with a six pack. That got obnoxious. Some of the guys will have a couple of drinks at the table from time to time. I save my drinking for at home or when I have a ride. I got into some trouble a few years back (oops!!) with a nice traffic officer and its not worth it anymore.
We order out for lunch alot too.
Stephen Lynch is a good comedian, but this was garbage (every comedian has botched it, he just happened to do it with something I respect and enjoy!)

I'd love thoughts on them... but I've got a strong dislike for the stephen lynch song... its like a movie about "wiggas" after (not even a great film) Can't Hardly Wait came out in the 90's.
Lastly guess this ties in because I do think that the Dead Alewives made an iconic skit about D&D, and that is why the mountain dew reference has lasted for so long.

I'll usually have water, coffee or Gatorade when I game. Sometimes a Monster. I like Coke and Cherry Coke, Mountain Dew, A&W, Orange Soda, Sprite, Dr. Pepper and others but I got burned out on pop for the most part. Now when I happen to drink it its actually good.
Understandable. Nothing like a marathon session and massive vasoconstriction from excess caffeine/dehydration (pseudo migraine...even worse when coupled w/ cigarettes). Give and take between awareness & pain.
Sucks, but I like the caffeine, particularly when I'm DM'ing. Keeps me on edge where I need to be. Not all a'twitter, but more cognizant as I have to attenuate to way more than a single PC. Like coffee at work, little peripheral x'tras help w/ the work load and productivity.
It's just every week, I am handed some random big ass beer stein, typically full of Coke after polishing off the to-go food while I prep/recap the campaign in what we call pre-game. This is not to be confused w/ common "pre-game" of many social circles before club, concerts, or sporting events; namely getting a few drinks in beforehand as there's nothing like taking out a loan to get a buzz at a Red's game or the rock show, etc.

Ditto. Perhaps if I knew it was decriminalized, job, licesnse, family weren't counting on me, then, maybe...IDK, that ship has sailed for now.
Alot of my friends in '03 however; every Friday game night at my apartment. God, like a chimney. 20% concealment from smokescreen, etc :D. And I realized I can't, need all mental faculties for the mechanical asepcts to DM, though it might engender good RP. Once in a while, some stoney guy at my table might get "best supporting actor" for his improv. 50/50 split.
Not worth it in the long run I suppose. They only had to attenuate to 2 pieces of paper tops, not me, oh no. I gotta' worry about every damn encounter, every book, map, minis, cool/uncool neighbors, etc. Too much hassle as a DM and citizen.
And nothing like a power smoker that gets more animated during intense combat and this makes them consume more...and consequently alter their tactical judgement, often w/ hilarious consequences. Nothing says bohemian malaise like stems & seeds in a die pool and TPK fallout.
And as for the inopportune smoke breaks, heh...running gag. I smoke (cigarettes) and always make it a point for it during proper downtime (never mid combat EVER). Alot of my friends, typically that old stoney Friday night bunch, didn't give a damn. I said, "You forfeit your turn then in combat and that % of XP too unless it's a smoking household and you stay put (where you should be)." We won't pause the clock for your indulgences...

A fair weather gamer of mine (was more consistant until possession & paraphanelia conviction, go figure) was like that. More exciting the scene, the more he'd smoke/drink. More exciting the scene (typically combat), the more you need to strategize & think clearly. I trust you see the self-destruction dilemma? Coupled w/ a laizze fare attitude about beer w/ his green, well, it was only a coma waiting to happen every campaign session.
This is why I suppose I only indulge in caffeine when gaming. I kinda' vamp off my friends in a 1/2'assed buzz motif. ie)When they're happy, I'm happy and they're not using while we game, so, when in Rome I guess...
Before work I drink most of a pot of coffee though!!

We got one of our friends (who never indulged in any mind-altering substances, including caffeine) all hopped up on these back in highschool. The results were rather... spectacular.
At one point, he dashed out of the caf for no discernable reason, only to show up again about 10 minutes later with a bag of cookies.
"Mike, where'd you get the cookies?"
"I dunno! I think I stole them off this girl. Oh man! Can I have some more coffee beans?!"
"Uh, no. Eat your cookies."

Grabbing a 2 liter bottle of MD, a fat bag o' chips and Subway or Taco Bell, then off to the basement for hours upon hours of 2nd Edition D&D play while it snowed endlessly outside.
Now it’s Diet Mountain Dew, low-calorie Subway and no chips or Taco Bell (too much salt and fat, etc...), and we’ve graduated to total home ownership and relocated to a place where snow is miles and miles away.
