LA Times, via ABC:
"
Michael Jackson was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center this afternoon after suffering cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports.
Michael Jackson announces a series of London concerts in July.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to Jackson's residence at 12:26 p.m. PT, according to the Los Angeles Times. The paper reported that paramedics performed CPR on the 50-year-old King of Pop, who was not breathing when they arrived at his home.

The fire department confirmed to ABCNews.com that it responded "to a medical call at 100 block of Carrolwood," where Jackson lives, and that they took one person to the UCLA Medical Center.

Rueters says...

"Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times," the newspaper reported on its website.

The real story will come out in the next few days. It took at least that long for David Caradine's full story to surface.

In fairness to the media, there was a lot of behavior to be suspicious of. Most of the people I know realize he was legally not guilty, but aren't naieve enough to think that is a declaration of actual innocence. This is primarily why I refuse to state my assumptions as being fact. Because I just don't know.

I'll second that.

People aren't born monsters, they're made that way. And even when they become monsters, they remain one of us. It's easy to dismiss them because what they do is monstrous, and to say they are not worthy of forgiveness or redemption, but they are our brothers and sisters afterall. And if they could not find a way to beat their demons in life, then we can at least wish them success in death.

A few things:

A) "NB4Lock": Law and guilt are not banned topics. As long as everyon keeps it civil and dosn't get into specifics of matters of the afterlife, we should be fine.

B) "Go to Hell": You can only say that about someone when they are alive, for some reason. After they are dead it is really just petty. It's already been resolved so either what you wished for has already come to pass or is not ment to be.

C) "Say that **** to my face and I'll kill you!": Someone needs to re-evaluate their priorities.

Because your concern is hollow and misplaced. Unless you happen to be close family or friends of the Jacksons there is likly nothing you will or can do to help his children, and frankly I doubt they need it. If you wish to let your past trama corelate into concern for orphans please channel it in a direction that will actually be helpfull and fullfilling. Volunteer at an orphanage or somethign.

Yah, and I'm a scientist. Just because someone says Mr. Darwin is a demonic heathen does not mean I would condone hitting them with a brick. If you think a diffrence of opinion over the moral fiber of a person whom you have never met is a valid cause for physical violence you probably need better role models in your life to better anchor your moral compass.

Perhapes. But I think that is what annoys me most about it. What seperates them from the countless nameless orphans around the world that, as demonstrated through actions, noone gives a damn about? Celebrity. Being the children of a famous person does not inherently make them more or less worthy of our compasion. It does however ensure that they have less need of it while also receiving more of it from people across the world. It is unfair on an epic level.

Edit:

Seriously? Nobody cares about poor, orphaned children?

Just because I don't have the ability to fly down to Africa and start handing out food and water, doesn't mean I don't care about those children. And when it comes to starving children, most people are going to feel the same way.

It's that people don't want to help - it's that they CAN'T help, or at least, they don't THINK they can help, so they don't try. But it's not a lack of compassion.

Now, when it comes to issues like this, then yes, I am in a minority of people who care. But not helping and not caring are two different things.

You've lost me. What part of our conversation is not serious? (A mans death, Felony battery, Orphaned children?)

I mean you're reading way too far into simple things.

For instance, saying I "advicated physical violence upon people who have diffrent religious views than you concerning the ultimate fate of dead musicians" - you're just trying way too hard.

If somebody says that something I care about deserves to go to Hell, then I'm going to do something about it. Really, I won't let anybody say that ANYONE deserves to go to Hell...but somehow, when it comes to a a girlfriend, heroes, etc...it's just so much more fun to pick a fight than to use words.

First of all, everyone deserves to die. It's our greatest reward. ;)

Alright, I can't understand people getting upset about this guy pasing on. I mean, you're not gonna get weepy when Charley Manson goes on to his great reward, are ya? I bring him up for one important reason: He will not be mourned even though he didn't personally harm any of the people he has been convicted of killing. MJ, otoh, physically harmed children. I don't care what the court has to say about it, either. Cuz the $20 million he gave the parents of the kid to keep it out of court says enough. Respect the music? Cool. Respect the man? You're out of your ****ing mind.

I do take solace in the fact that there are no children in Hell for MJ to abuse. And I take extra comfort from knowing that this fact will make Hell even more of a Hell for MJ. ;)

Oh, and is that the newest argument? He's guilty because he has a lot of money?

No. He's likely guilty because he spent a huge sum of money to keep the case out of court. If there was no chance to be found liable, why not force a lower settlement or try the case?

He also dangled his own child out of a window. By a foot. He claimed to let kids sleep in his own bed - with him - because it was something beautiful to do. If kids are so beautiful, how could he possibly endanger his own so easily. And publicly. Maybe because he had issues with incest, I dunno.

The man was a ****ing train wreck. He destroyed himself phyically and financially. You know he started life as a black man, right? When he sang 'ABC' back in the day - as a child - his voice was deeper than it was the day he died. As screwed up as he was, is it really so hard to believe he did what he was accused of doing? Especially when we consider the fact he bought himself out of a trial? Really?

Hey, I am not defending MJ, or child molesters in general, I just want you guys to think about how simply being charged with a crime, even if you are innocent, can ruin you.

I'm not disputing that. It's a sad reality. In the case of MJ, there's plenty of supporting evidence to draw your own conclusions from, IMO. Kinda like OJ. Accusations can be damning whether true or not, yes. But acquittal - or, in MJ's case, settling to prevent trial - does not guarantee innocence, either. In the eyes of the law, yes. In reality, not always.

I think he sold off those rights to pay for the mammoth debt he had acrued over the years, largely of a legal nature I'm guessing. Curious to see what Mr. McCartney might say during press release time...this isn't the 1st time he was backstabbed by someone close to him under the pretense of $.

Anyway, MJ is dead. Boy, I liked that guy...in 2nd grade. Wonder how many other kids were enamored of the guy, yet ignorant of what he'd become.
Seems like the more fame you heap upon someone, the more messed up they get.

Elvis, King of Rock; fat, drug addicted, married his cousin, bla bla bla.

That's very true. Some of those poor decisions also involved children (sleeping in his bed, dangling them out of windows, etc, etc). ;)

We would spend 6 mil at one visit to a decoration store. To him spending 20 mil to silence a legal matter probably didn't seem like that big of a deal. And his behavior over the years shows he never put to much thought into how the public would make of it.

And I see that same lack of thought and carelessness as something that could have led him to commit these acts. We'll never know, but his willingness to pay to avoid a trial and his ever increasing insane behavior do not exactly paint the picture of innocence. Remember, it's not speculation that he had children sleep in his own bed. Not his own kids, mind. Remember also that it is not speculation that he endangered his own child. These two things - when taken together - give us an idea of what he may have been capable of. Add in his behavior ...

Michael Jackson had character flaws, that is certain. Did he molest children? I don't know. Neither do any of you who are condemning him.

Michael Jackson just made music. He wasn't a shiny golden god among men, or some Satanic Creature creating all the sins in the world. We DON'T know if he molested children or not. Michael Jackson just made music.

To be fair, writers and producers pretty much made his music and he'd do the lyrics in much the same way as Madonna and the like. Funny how the mega huge pop stars that make 7 figures mostly just sing and dance. Very few actually can play an instrument. And even then, you've got the lip synching issues to make live performances look "smoother" etc.

Meanwhile, there's kids in a garage somewhere busting their asses w/ their guitars and amps that won't get a lick of attention. Image is valued more than talent. American Idol anyone? Why don't they have the same show, same format and so forth, but for best guiatarist one season, best drummer on another, DJ, pianist, whatever. Sprucing up & grabbing a mic doesn't really do it for me when the band is the meat and potatos of your act.
Ppl seem more enamored of the rock star than the rock itself I suppose.

He wasn't a shiny golden god among men, or some Satanic Creature creating all the sins in the world.

I do like the fact that he rep'ed the black community musically w/ something apart from more b-tches & hos, bling, and getting phat paid dime-a-dozen rap acts. God, that gets old quick. But this is pop not R&B, hip hop, or rap. Charity work and awareness helped too. Teeter totter, good & bad.

We DON'T know if he molested children or not.

We don't, truly. His family, lawyers, and probably a handful of kids on the other hand? IDK. Innocent until proven guilty, but privledge and wealth get a lot of sketchy things done here in our courts, savvy? But, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...Plz don't think less of me for this cynicism, it just paints a bad picture of MJ is all. I guess we could call said pic an "unfinished work". God will have the final say I'm guessing.

All we know if that he made some good music, but he also took drugs and was quite ecentric.

I think that goes w/out saying for most big time entertainers. Morrison, Tyler, Hendrix, Renzor, Speares, even a lot of "clean cut" country performers, etc.

IF he did molest children, I hope there's some sort of punishment or something bad happens to him, but I'm not too sure about my own religion. I believe in evolution, yet I think God exists. Eh.

I assume most rock stars, movie stars and other celebs are stand-up peckers in real life. They may make good music, movies, whatnot (and I might enjoy their work for what it is).

That being said, rich and famous people may not all be perverts like Jackson was suspected of being, but I'd bet they aren't the kind of people I'd want to chat with on the street. I mean what would I say? "Oh, saw your new Transformers movie out this weekend. Great move! Oh, and I heard about your being bisexual; very interesting." :P

This is how I feel about Jackson. I believe he was a talented entertainer (in his day) and his influence is still being felt in music today. As to what kind of person he was, I wouldn't care enough to say one way or the other.

I am not sure if that one was before or after the one he paid for, but he could have paid simply to stop the aggravation/litigation/whatever.

I simply just don't know if he was a molester or not...beyond a reasonable doubt... no matter how crazy I may have thought he was.

Ok, as far as I know he settled outside of court in one and was acquitted in another, and that was that. Chances are, he did something inappropriate, but that's just that - my freaking guess. I doubt it went as far as ****, and that's also my freaking guess. Anyone else's is little better. Yeah, money can buy you a good settlement. Money could also get you an expensive case in which people try to fleece you out of as much as possible - just ask any alimony lawyer. Which of the two was Jacko's settlement more like? You choose (ok, not just you personally, I guess I'm just a little bit angry at all the hubbub).

But I know what he did for my childhood, and for those of many people I know, and I can't thank him enough for that. I have a cousin who spent many great years trying to be a dancer, because she loved the way he danced, and I thank him for all the smiles she smiled when she was at it. Yeah, he might have been wacko - I doubt he could be anything else, given he was a superstar from the age of 5 - but few people made as much as a difference in today's musical world as he does. But can we please, please wait until his body is quite cold before we start joking and accusing him of God knows what?

Well, obviously reasonable doubt was in the minds of that jury as well.
I don't know if OJ did it, or had somebody do it or not. It is certainly possible, but a jury didn't think the evidence proved it beyond a reasonable doubt.

And now, whether or not he actually did commit or have anything to do with the murder, his life is ruined (even before his current predicament).

We can all make assumptions, but in critical, life-changing cases like these, it is imperative and absolute to be sure beyond a reasonable doubt.

Do I think they are guilty? Yeah, I do.
Do I know they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? No, I don't.

And there's the rub...

Another jury was convinced enough to finacially ruin the man for his crimes. He didn't go to jail because it was a civil case. He was acquitted because some white guy called him the n word. So the evil shifted from the defense to the prosecution. The evidence is there. Oh well, he's done anyway. ;)

The thing about all this is that we're not talking about sending anyone to prison. For better or worse, OJ and MJ were spared that (well, OJ was for a while). What we're discussing is our opinions about these two crimes based upon the evidence we've seen. I don't know if OJ or MJ did it. I think they did. What does that all mean? Not much more than how I feel about peanut butter sandwiches does. ;)

Also, the burden of proof is less in a civil court than a criminal one.

Good? Hell, he had one of the best ever. Money can buy you anything. Even freedom/happiness. If you doubt the happiness part, take a look at some of the pics of OJ golfing after the verdict. He's a happy man. ;)

About the burden of proof thing, it's a good point. It is easier to get a 'win' in a civil case.

Why? It's not a very good joke. Bad taste aside. The entire punch line hinges upon him being a ****. My understanding of **** is that pedophiles like children to play with them. It would have been a much better joke if it was presented straight as being in his last will and testiment. For those of you who want to burn me at the stake:

Which none of us does.
I really don't care who he was. I know that the case was "dismissed", which only means that like OJ his lawer was better than the kids. Money frequently buys a result like this in court. Was it proven, was it speculation, was it something else? Who knows.

There's this concept of "innocent until proven guilty." If you have no proof of your opinion, then that opinion has no merit. In other words, you have no right to feel the way you do (does not mean anyone has the right to force you to change your mind). You never answered what I said about justice and you having thrown your sense of it away. Which you so totally have that you cannot be taken seriously.
Now for why I feel like I do about molesters: when I was a kid my step brother was raped by some jackass. If it wasn't found out about as quick as it was it might have happened to me the next time I was at that parents house.

This doesn't justify your libelous behavior and hatred of the man. As before, you have no proof.
I have had friends who have spent time in prison, You do realize the molesters have to be kept from the rest of the population because they hate them as much as I do. The hardened criminals will solve the problem for the rest of the planet if they are not seperated.

And those people are to be stopped, with deadly force if necessary, from killing them. Regardless of what they have done, this does not excuse any ethical infraction against them any more than you jumping off a cliff is justified by someone else doing it first.

We'll never know unless those kids come out and say "I lied"; which I doubt they'll do, ever. But even if Jackson did molest them, it's not like they required intensive, reconstructive surgery - he obviously never meant to hurt them.

Not to mention, Jackson's childhood left him seriously scarred. Almost everyone I've talked to about it (within the past couple of days) sees him as the "sympathetic" child molester, who do what they do because of events in their own childhood, not because they're monsters.

Either way, these accusations led him to his drug dependency, so I won't be surprised if they actually led to his death.

Just to point out, there's an awful lot of people that were sent to Gitmo that had no business being there in the first place, and held wrongfully for seven years. Actually it is suspected that we may have created far more terrorists thanks to Gitmo and it's Torture Practices than we've stopped at this point. The thing that keeps going through my mind is: With a military that size, who are we gonna kill next? I mean these guys and gals aren't gonna simply sit around polishing their tanks and guns for too long. Might as well let some 'suspected' terrorists loose, stir something up .

The military budget of the United States just blows my mind. $651,000,000,000 (that's billions) for this year alone. I've read that it's nearly more than the rest of the world combined and eight times more than the closest spender, China.

The thing that keeps going through my mind is: With a military that size, who are we gonna kill next? I mean these guys and gals aren't gonna simply sit around polishing their tanks and guns for too long. Might as well let some 'suspected' terrorists loose, stir something up .

A huge factor that you've failed to consider is our development of uber high-tech 'smart' gadgetry. I can assure you that the closest spender to us - China -is not concerned with wiping out civilians with any military action they take. The USA, otoh, is. Too much so, IMO, but that's an entirely different derailment. ;) We spend a crapton on the military, yes. But that money is used to buy expensive things. Precision munitions are not cheap. Unmanned vehicles are not cheap. Stealth tech is not cheap. The US military has taken great pains to invest in weaponry that is 'safer' to non-combatants developing everything from bombs to firearms that will not only make life easier for its soldiers, but also for the civvies we're fighting around. No other country of comparable size has the same dedication. No other country of comparable size, then, needs to spend the same. And, again, China, Russia, etc, don't give a damn who gets killed during a war. So they don't spend on crazy stuff like GPS tech that gets stuffed into a bomb or a cruise missile only to be destroyed during use.

Another thing that you've failed to consider is that militaries are not solely for aggressive action. We try to have the best stuff so that people think twice about attacking us. That's why certain tech isn't even used in theater. Cuz it's for us only. Things like the F22 - which has been proven vastly superior to any aircraft in existance in live combat simulation - are stay at home toys. Not only because of cost and limited numbers, but because they're damned intimidating. To scale it down a bit, would you be more likely - if you were so inclined - to punch the scrawny and unarmed kid to 'get the girl' or whatever or would you punch the huge guy with an AA12? ;)

In short, the numbers are somewhat misleading. We pay a ton for a little. Cuz if we didn't, we'd get even more flak from the international community and our own soccer moms at home. Also, we do not train aggressors, we train defenders as well. There's more to this than you've chosen to present.

EDIT: Oh yeah. Almost forgot. That spending also creates jobs. Hell, my own father used to work for a company that built parts for the actuators used on Tomahawk cruise missiles. I really see nothing to complain about when I see that number. Nothing at all.

EDIT2: How did a thread about the death of an alleged **** get here? I mean, I read the damned thing and I still can't figure it out ... :P

Thanks for your post, Zombie Babies. I was kinda hoping somebody might elaborate on what I'd thrown out. The astronomical numbers shocked me when I first saw them but you've helped me realize what they actually mean.

Yeah, this is off-topic ;); think it started when the discussion turned to terrorists (which in turn, got me thinking of military spending :confused.

Meh, it's fun to talk about. :D

Now how did this turn to talk about terrorists, again? :P Man, can we derail threads or what? So ... umm ... what's next?

Probably because Hated mentioned Gitmo and I mentioned that we already have Terrorists in Super Max.

Hmmm. Xbox Epeens?

Ditto. Ed McMahon and Farah Fawcette died as well...hello, news?
Oh, and the OxiClean guy also died today @ 50yrs.
Guess MJ was/is still the media darling.

Well, in all honesty MJ was a bigger celebrity than Ed McMahon and Farah Fawcette, imo. I would rather compare him with Princess Diana, and there was quite a bit of talk about her death as well.

Yes. And this means that he was of more value than Farrah an' Eddy so we should mourn him more loudly. Especially those of us who never knew him. For fame is second only to godliness and we must worship those that have more than we. Remember, the only false idol is one that's never mentioned on TMZ.

I'm curious as well (assuming you're referring to Jeff Goldblum, not MJ of course). I notice his wikipedia entry is 'locked'; is that normal? I assume it may be if a person has recently died.

Well, seeing how he was on the Colbert Report monday, I think it's safe to say it's a hoax.

Either it was a hoax or it was some average joe named Jeff Goldblum and so everyone thought it was the actor. If it were a hoax then it seems like a bad one cuz it not be in the US. If it were in the US or better yet in the LA region then it would be a great hoax. ;)

Well, I don't know if it was editing done on the show, but they said "Jeff GoldBloom fell to his death while working on a movie in New Zealand" so I'm guessing it's CNNitis.

Okay, found my own answer. Apparently Goldblum made an appearance on the Colbert Report (which I never saw) as an answer to a NZ tv report that the actor had fell to his death from a cliff while shooting a movie.

Seems a lot of celebs have 'made the list' recently; all internet rumor of course. Can't believe I got caught up in it for a second ;). Is that the meaning of the phrase 'CNN-itis'?

Here's where I read it.

CNNitis- the lack of fact checking by a large media base before releasing an article on such. I target CNN for this because they seem to lack any reason to fact check. Other news groups get stuff wrong too, but not as on a large scale as CNN.
