My brain is odd

Ok, so lately I've noticed that I simply cannot say 'you're welcome' when someone tells me 'thank you'.  I can hear myself saying something else, recognize I should be saying 'you're welcome', feel a struggle and can't seem to overcome this inexplicable inability to utter the phrase.  I know I used to say it - like when I was a kid, I think - and that I haven't said it for quite some time.  So yeah, b0rked.  I tend to say things like 'no problem' or 'alright, let me know if there's anything else you need' - though I certainly say something like the former most often.  And I say it with a genuine smile most of the time (which is odd cuz I don't usually smile (cuz I don't like to - issues, you see)) and no matter whether or not I actually like the person doesn't seem to matter.  It's like I'm satisfied with my work and that's what concerns me or something.  But yeah, I can't seem to say 'you're welcome'.  Had a few situations today that resulted in that prototypical exchange, knew that I wanted to say the 'right' thing and still totally failed to manage it.  Meh, whatever, right?

Oh yeah, I also hate it when somebody starts that polite small talk in passing BS.  You know, you're walking and somebody you sorta know is coming past and they say 'hi' so you say 'hello' and then they say 'how are you?' so you say 'ok' or 'good' and then 'you?' and then they say 'ok' or 'good' and you both keep walking.  It's so damned scripted.  Why do we even bother?  And it's such a waste of time and so fake that I find myself temporarily resenting whoever subjected me to it.  And I can't stand that I feel a tiny bit of guilt if I don't initiate it myself.  Yeah.

I have sorta the same thing with pre-scripted responses... like whenever I say bye to someone my default response is "see you next time"... which makes no sense when you're talking to someone you'll never see again.

But that was just the greeting I learned when I was a kid, and now I use it all the time.

It can be annoying to feel bound by social scripts and conventions some times. It feels so pointless, and yet you know it´s going to get awkward if you ignore it, even though the other person probably also thinks it's pointless.

Yeah, part of me hates itself every time I interact in one of those ways.  But a bigger part knows that I have to play the silly games or risk having folks perceive me badly.  In the work environment, that's a big deal.  I wonder if it's why I sometimes behave in such terrible ways to people outside of work.  Like, if it's blowing off steam or something.

As for the walking by "hello thing" I usually am past the person by they get to "How are you" so I never have to deal with it.

With the other I'll rarely say welcome, as they likely are not.

We've got some damned long hallways here.  ;)  As far as 'you're welcome' goes, if I say anything at all I'd have no issue saying that - er, aside from the odd block that does, in fact, prevent me from saying it.  Like, I totally would say it if I could.  I just can't.  And I don't know why.  Seriously, not 10 minutes ago someone said 'thank you' to me and, since I had it happen a few other times this morning, I was keenly aware of it and that now was my time to say 'you're welcome', made a conscious effort to do it and then felt my face sort of scrunch up as I said something else instead.  Like I could feel it wanting to come out but something greater not letting it.  It's strange, to say the least.

I hate scripted talk too, so usually if someone says "how are you doing" and I don't have any reason to expect that they actually want to talk to me I just respond with "hey" or "hows it going". That way I'm not being outright rude, but since I didn't actually answer their question, they usually don't feel any obligation to continue the conversation.

I know what your problem is. You've been in the OTT too long. RM finally corrupted you. You'll only get worse.

I think youre perfectly normal there ZB, I mean at least youre saying things like no problem, I mean thats pretty much the same thing, its not like youre saying **** off, or saying something like gooniegoogoo, if you started saying gooniegoogoo everytime you would normally say youre welcome or no problem, thats when Id start to worry.

Gooniegoogoo? You're showing your age, and your comedic preferences, with a reference like that.

I don't think there's much risk of ZB responding to a "thank you" with "gooniegoogoo" any time soon. It takes years to learn to speak Bigfoot.

If you don't like saying the scripted conversations, stop being a Turing test candidate and just say whatever you want. Who knows, after enough years and enough people picking it up, it will be the new norm. I personally find that "You're Welcome" isn't the norm anymore, and "[No Problem | It was nothing]" and other phrases are more common. Adam Corrola pointed out that even unlikeable people eventually are tolarated in a way, "That's just Bob being Bob"
