| #3boraxeMay 31, 2010 10:59:13 | Wow! I walked out the front door to go to the grocery store about 2 minutes after happened, before the emergency vehicles even arrived. A fire truck showed up a few minutes later and they immediately started CPR, though it is pretty clear he was already dead (you don;t give CPR to a guy with a heartbeat, and he'd been lying there for quite a while with no medical assitance at all). Within 10 minutes there were half a dozen police cars and two ambulances. Our home ended up being in the middle of the taped off exclusion zone and we needed a police escort whenever we exited or entered the area. When they loaded the guy into an ambulence there was no particular sense of urgency, and it sat around for a good 10 minutes or more before leaving (and used no sirens), and I'm pretty sure I heard one EMT refer to him as "the body". Eventually there were 14 or so cop cars, dozens of cops, and a Forensics/CSI team surrounding the area. The wife and I ended up spending about an hour or so giving statements to the police. I wish I could have been of more help but I missed the "event" so I'm not sure how much assistance I could supply. I am disgusted by the fact that one of our neighbours saw the whole thing but said she was going to withhold information so she wouldn't have to go to court to testify. ![]() |

If the cops can prove it, the neighbor can be charged with with-holding info, hindering an investigation, and maybe even aiding and abetting, or a number of other charges. And yes, it is disgusting. |
| #5MechaliburMay 31, 2010 11:26:40 | Why is testifying such a big deal to some people? It's something I could never understand. |
| #6Robin_HoodlumMay 31, 2010 11:28:51 | It's about upholding the law and bringing people to justice. |
| #7MechaliburMay 31, 2010 11:37:07 | And... that's... bad? |
| #8Robin_HoodlumMay 31, 2010 11:38:57 | ? You seemed to be arguing against it...? Upholding the law and justice I mean... ... |
| #9boraxeMay 31, 2010 11:39:48 | Why is testifying such a big deal to some people? It's something I could never understand. Cos they've seen too many movies and TV shows that use bad guys coming after witnesses as a cheap plot-hook, I guess. It's not like she saw a mob hit or something, it was a domestic dispute gone very, very wrong. We told the fuzz what she said, but it's just hearsay to them. She spent a long while giving them a statement just after it happened so it might be that she told them everything then, I really hope so, or it could be that she'll not have to testify anyway. The woman who stabbed her husband stayed at the scene and was arrested, and the results of most murder charges are determined through pleas and never even go to trial, but I am still disturbed by her intent. I was also disgusted by the fact her immediate reaction was to blame it on a housing project not too far from where we live (it is a real incongruity in an otherwise quite fairly upscale and desirable neighbourhood) even though these people just happened to be driving past our place when it occured and had nothing to do with the project at all. |
| #10MechaliburMay 31, 2010 11:43:00 | ? Oh, no, you completely misunderstand me. I was asking why people were so afraid about testifying, not why people made such a big deal about people who didn't. This is what I should have said: Why are people so afraid of testifying? It's something I could never understand. |
| #11Robin_HoodlumMay 31, 2010 11:44:40 | ? Ahhh.... My bad. |
