My mom started playing D&D in grade school. So the legend goes... she started playing in red box????? Any way she is currently working on a project that involves D&D and she asked this

I'm reminded of the song where have all the flowers gone. What the hell is it with this new MM. there are no bullywugs and i can't find a decent damp/lakeside large mass attacking. i want them to enter the area just inside a dense, heavy forest that surronuds this MASSIVE lake that takes at best speed 18 hours or more to just follow the road next to it half way around the lake before the road turns back north. I know my memory is swiss chees and i know that this is the worst day of my life and i really need to slaughter some things but i know there were more monsters that we went up against that were open, attack passer-byers and laid in wait for slaves/treasure/food/fun of killing. ♫♪♫where have all the monsters gone, long time passing.♫♪♫questions.

My question is where are all thses monsters my grandparents and their peers were having a cow over? Have off the wall crazy stuff at midnight on a saturday in a basement in suberbia gone for good?

In ye olden days of gaming, a typical gaming group's style was different that it is now. Gaming culture has changed. Since character classes didn't have skills and a bunch of class features, a good deal of what your PC could do was dictated by the dungeon master. Storytelling was more predominant, since there were fewer game mechanics to lean on.

One can combine the old with the new, but it takes a bit of effort on one everyone's part. Its worth it.

As far as those monsters and where they've gone... plenty have fallen to the wayside. There's been many editions since red box and each one drops off something old and picks up something new.

MM2 pg 28 and 29.

I think she meant "new" as in, "newfangled Third or Fourth Edition" MM, rather than "most recently published".

Regarding that, I have zero interest in bullywugs, and wouldn't even notice if they were never published in 4E. Different people have different ideas of which monsters are really pivotal, and they can't all fit in one, two or even five Monster Manuals. My solution? I usually make my own. A great deal of my creative juices for DMing are spent coming up with interesting new creatures and abilities.

I kind of like how the monsters change from edition to edition. It shows that the game is constantly evolving and changing; it's always throwing new things your way. It also helps weed out the stupid monsters (though how the Owlbear made it all the way to fourth is beyond me :D).

But then i pose a few philisophical questions (hey i'm a bard i must stretch my mind and the minds of others)
1. Are we still playing the same game then?
2. Are we disrespecting 'ye game of old
3. What are we missing out on by tossing aside tried and true 40 yr old monsters
4. Is there a way to reclaim some of the lost flavor of the game. It has survive this long for a reason. The foundation and basics of the game had to have been spot on for this game to have gotten where it is.
Maybe I'm just an old soul but I have cut my teeth on the stories of how crazy my grandparents were about this sinsiter game and how it was played with pencil and paper in the basements of suburbia and the whole mystic it held.
Okay off soapbox, who's next?

  • Not exactly. Both games are D&D, but that doesn't mean they're the same game.
  • No.
  • The main thing that has been "missing" from newer editions is a certain flavor of absurdity and humor in the books themselves. The designers (since 3rd edition at least) made the decision that humor doesn't always translate well from a group to the page and back to the group, so instead of trying to be funny they did their best to make a good game and trusted that groups would add their own sillyness and humor if that was what they wanted. As such, it's only "missed" if your group doesn't choose to put that level of absurd humor in.
  • Yes. Have a group that likes absurd humor.

in the pitch of night, the dense forest goes quiet as a sudden gust of wind snuffs the campfire keeping you warm. as you stumble to light it again, a rustle is heard off in the bush.

"Hoot... Hoot..."

"darn noisy owls" you think to yourself as you flick flint and steel against dry tinder

"Hoot! Hoot!"

your face goes pale as you just succeeded the Nature check required to know that there are no owls in this region.

the night is quiet yet again and one less adventurer will wander the woods.

that is why you don't diss the owlbear

Haha. Owlbears have become something of a running joke between my brother and I. My brother doesn't play D&D, but when I showed him the Owlbear we both laughed like crazy. We tried to come up with what sound it would make and settled on "WOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOO!!"

oh, don't get me wrong, i love poking fun at the owlbear, it's a silly beast and i'll milk both the owl and bear part for all they're worth.

instead of the growls and roars of the bear or screech of the owl i'll normally give it a meek "hoot" and showcase that it's a silly combination, but still play up the fact that it has those razor sharp talons and beak and both are gunning for your gullet.

especially if you make it a female with the protective instincts of a mother bear :D

You can milk a bear, but you can't milk an owl. Are you sure you can milk an owlbear?

yup. it's got the bottom of a bear it can be milked.

it also has this neat ability to twist it's head 330 degrees like an owl

However, you should probably make sure you know what sex your owlbear is before you try to milk it. Otherwise you just might cross the line from "weird, but acceptable" to "kinky sex tape".

... well that thought went in a strange direction. It started at "kinky owlbear porn" and ended at excessively feathered owls in leather harnesses and kinky caps being all hyper-masculine. There may have been zippers.
