#1 Dreamstryder Sep 15, 2009 21:36:51	I may just describe half of every late 80s mech animé, but I'm hoping someone out there is knowledgeable enough to help me. The style for this anime was pretty 80s to me (tho' if it were Voltes it would be 70s). In 1993-5, I recall watching on TV (morning on FOX, I think) an English dub of some mecha show about aliens from Jupiter that inhabited large, green, pupa-looking spaceships, their leader a large, dark shadow with red eyes with a large red cloud/planet filling the background. They were at war with Earth, the main character being some young man with tussled black hair. The episode I remember best: There was a little (girl?) with big eyes and glasses (& a helmet?) who worked a computer in the opening sequence. Spikey Blackhair walks into the mecha hallway, complements long-blue hair female character on her perfume. He noticed, she thinks. Later Spikey Blondhair challenges Spikey Blackhair's fitness to pilot a mecha, so they get into a mecha duel, and Spikey Black started sweating and having a traumatic attack or something of the sort while Bluehair watches concerned. I think it was "to be continued" at that point. While inside the mecha, the pilots' faces were visible, not covered by a mask. The ending credits were just a still-screen of a sunset and the lyric-less music, which I remember but can't hum to you (dadaDAAAAAAA, dadaDAAAAAAAA, dadada DAdaaaaaa dadaDAAAAAAA). I'm guessing Robotech (blue hair and mechas turning into jets seems familiar) or Voltes (helmet & name look familiar), but I haven't found that little girl at the computer or the music in either series.

#3 Dreamstryder Sep 15, 2009 21:59:25	I know it isn't Nadesico because I've seen it, and it's also too new; the series I saw was in an older style. Nadesico does fit a number of clues, I think because it plays on many archetypes that developed in the genre's older series. Thanks, tho'.
#4 Dreamstryder Sep 16, 2009 1:45:00	I'm pretty sure now I saw Rick Hunter, Minmei, and the kid was Annie ID'd from this picture. If Annie's in there, I suppose the episode in question was from the New Generation arc of Robotech (I haven't found the end credits music to check it). I also wonder who the blond guy was.

#9 Dreamstryder Sep 18, 2009 16:57:23	Hm, I think I remember Voltron (giant mechanical lions fusing in space), Mospeada (virtual reality motorcycles; probably as a splice ingredient of Robotech). Fox might have spliced together their own version of the show and/or their own credits sequences as they did with Escaflowne in 1998 or so, because this Robotech opening doesn't sound familiar. The opening's kid was either Annie or the kid from Voltron, but I'm not sure I was watching the same anime any more as Voltron played at a similar time and Annie wasn't in the Robotech series at the same time as those who fit the other character descriptions: Rick Hunter, Lynn Minmay, and Roy Fokker (albeit Rick's mentor, not rival), who are together in the episode 1-18 range of the Macross Saga arc. That might fit the green larva ships I saw, too. I have a brother who delights in Full Metal Panic!; as for me, I'm an Escaflowne fan. Fox's brief air of cut and remixed Escaflowne episodes was how I found the series, and their cancellation of it (either due to content objections or because they had to figure out how the plot could make sense after they'd cut and changed so many scenes) motivated me to find the uncut version in a video store. PS: Apparently the Robotech arc in question is shown officially on Youtube, so I can see.
