Oct 06, 2010 19:05:07 So, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is swiftly creeping up. Anyone else participating?

Right now I'm fishing for ideas. Last year I did something Urban Fantasy-ish (didn't finish). Don't know what to do this year.

Oct 06, 2010 20:03:20 I might participate, but not by the rules as I'd want to write a story with the SO. Kinda had random inspiration for an urban fantasy story that I shared with him, and he seemed to like the idea well enough that we've been bouncing back random snippets for a few weeks now.

As for ideas for you... how are you on super spy thriller comedies? 'cause I got nothin' like that up my sleeves. Though I am wearing sleeves. But only for another hour.

Oct 07, 2010 1:50:43 I don't think I have the time, I did participate a few times the past years. Finished one book, too. A fantasy story about werewolves, but not like most books about werewolves.

You submit it to the automated counter, but there's no price. The whole purpose of the "contest" is to motivate all those people that say "Someday, I'm going to write a book." to stop saying it and actually doing it. In one month. Together with about 50,000 other people.

It's really awesome.

You submit it to the automated counter

Automated counter?

You convert all the text in your document to nonsense (usually by doing a Search & Replace that targets everything except spaces and punctuation and replaces it with with a single letter, e.g.: "Hello, goldomark." becomes "aaaaa, aaaaaaaaa.") You submit it to NaNoWriMo's online word counter, which updates your status. For those who prefer pen/pencil and paper, there is the option to submit yout own number count.

The whole thing is on the honor system, and there are no entry fees or prizes. It's just encouragement to write.

First year I did a horror story involving set in 1870s Nevada, the next year I did a comedy fantasy story about a bt to swipe a wizards hat, this year I'm still thinking about it.
