Well, there it is. I guess It's all still tentative, however... but its pretty close to what most people guessed in older threads.

I still kinda wished it was Bane.

I think it makes sense. They're going (very roughly) in order of their introduction in the comics.

You can't bring in Bane yet. You've got to give Batman another film to become complacent before breaking him in half. There's also the fact that he doesn't have a Robin or Nightwing to take up the mantle while he's out this time. That's a storyline/villain that makes more sense further down the road.

Cher as Catwoman?

This has to be a joke, right?

I'm hoping so. If not, I hope they see something there that I don't.

Depp as Riddler, though? Spot on.

I've seen quite a few articles, and since the film in question is barely in pre-production I could only imagine it's all bup-kiss.

Notice, though, they say Cher is Nolan's first choice, not that she got the role.

I still find it somewhat worrisome. What if Cher's busy? Is number two Phillis Diller?

Though I've seen one suggestion for David Tennant (for Riddler).
That said, I could see Depp doing it. Hopefully he'd keep him more intellectual, and not....kooky.

Cher? No. Please, Dear Lord, No. That's...no. Catwoman's supposed to be able to actually keep up with Batman, physically and mentally, or nearly so. Cher...sorry, I just don't see it.
Also, it makes the potential romantic tension feel...weird/creepy.

The number two choice for Catwoman, is, of course, David Hasslehoff. Shame on you for not knowing.

If they replace Heath Ledger as the Joker, I really hope they bring back Nicholson.

Then again maybe he's too old these days.

He was too old then, and he was a terrible Joker.

Someone here suggested Crispin Glover as the Riddler, and now even Depp seems sub-par. I mean I am sure he will be excelent, but Glover would inhabit that part, much as Ledger did.

Yeah, he was sub-par in my opinion. He was probably good if he was the first incarnation you'd seen of the Joker (such as if you'd never read the comics), but he didn't do the role justice when compared to the persona in print.

I know not of this Glover person (any relation to Danny?), he might be better than Depp for all I know. But Depp is the king of "inhabiting" the parts he plays. I don't think he'll be lacking if he's the eventual choice.

I liked him. Truly. But Ledger was amazing. No contest, IMO.

True. For example, when preparing for his role as Dr Thompson in Fear and Loathing, Depp actually went to live with HST in order to observe him enough to adopt his mannerisms and speaking style well enough to "become" him for the film. He can't observe the Riddler, of course, but this example of his dedication to truly becoming the character is enough for me to trust what he'd do with the role. Depp would certainly commit to it.

If you have watched the recent Charlie's Angels movies, he was the one playing the thin man. That is the only role I recall seeing him in, so I cannot accurately comment on whether he has the right stuff for playing the Riddler. I have seen lots of people in various forums making this suggestion, though, so he must be a fairly good actor.

Just took a look at IMDB and he does seem to have an extensive resume. He was actually in one of my all time favorites: Dead Man (Depp starred, oddly enough). Still, if the role people use when touting him as their hope for the next Riddler is some jagoff from a friggin' awful Charlies' Angels flick, I'll simply have to reaffirm my vote for Depp. It would also be interesting to see how far away from his "normal" type of acting he'll go. The Dark Knight was interesting in no small part because Ledger transformed himself that way. To see another very well known name do the same would certainly help the film and the series as a whole. Glover, though fairly prolific, doesn't seem to be quite a household name and would not garner the same interest as Depp. And Depp is damned good. Though I don't like the Pirates crap much. :D

The Riddler should be scary. Depp, while a tremendous actor, is too charming and pretty-in-the-face for my tastes.

Glover, OTOH, has possibilities...

His most famous role would either be Marty McFly's dad, George in Back to the Future. (I am your density.) or Grednel in Beowolf. But his best work was in River's Edge. He is not an virtuoso actor like Depp, I would never assert he is on par with Depp's amazing ability. But he is I think much more right for the role. What he would bring to it would be his obvious discomfort in his own skin. It just seems so right for the Riddler.

Hmm. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of him. I know Depp could pull it off. I have no idea if Glover could. That's probably my issue.

Cher did win an oscar and a nomination from the academy... so we know (or at least hope she still can) act.

Although, if I were gonna go for an older vamp type, I might shoot for Jane Seymour, Ellen Barkin or (batman allumni!) Kim Basinger or Michelle Pfieffer... all of which are pretty good looking and respectable actresses themselves.

If you have any doubts as to whether Glover could play the part he also played Grendel in Beowulf. He did the movements and voice for em and he was the one who was mapped. He has been in a ton of movies...some of which you may have seen, like Back to the Future...http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000417/

Depp would be awesome...Glover would be awesome...seen a bunch of movies with both and they can do the deranged.

If this is true, which I highly suspect it is not, I think Cher would make a cool Catwoman. Especially for the "vamp in her twilight years" part - I mean, it's not even a big stretch for her. ;)

As a BIG fan of Julie Newmar, I've always thought there was something missing from the other incarnations of Catwoman (while I did like Pfieffer, she didn't have the vampiness that Newmar did).

But, then again, I was disappointed with The Dark Knight, so I'm used to being the odd one out.

I'll believe these rumors when I see them posted on official Warner Bros. letterhead memos or have them directly quoted from a source who isn't afraid to reveal himself inside the movie studio.

Until then I think it's just the rumor mill heading into overdrive and the tabloids buying into it.

First of all not official.

Guys come on, Nolan hasn't EVEN written the third story yet! How could there be actors set? And Cher? Come on, I can't believe anyone fell for that.

WB is calling Nolan back soon to see if he wants to do a third one, I think Heath's death threw out any Joker return but I trust Nolan should he decide to start writing for a third film. If he doesn't, it was a great two movies but with the Darkknight being the 2nd biggest movie ever and Downey Jr starting a fire with his recent comments.... WB will do whatever they can to get Nolan for another movie.

Cher.... come on guys... geez look at the source! Says it right there.

Nolan and Bale are both english, so it makes sense a UK article would get the jump on it, especially since the very first stages of preproduction would take place there.

But, the fanboys have been saying for quite a while it will be Depp, so that might not even be legit itself.
It does seem reasonable, however, considering the work both actors did on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus... I know Depp took over (part of) Ledger's role, but I'm unsure if they actually worked together on the film.

Used so far (in current run):

Other Prominant (IMO) Batman villains:

Now...the movies thus far have tended to avoid the supernatural. So guys like "Man-Bat" can probably be ruled out right from the start. Even people like Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze would probably be changed to be more "realistic", which is fine.

Personally, I feel like a Red Hood (not jason todd, just make him somebody else) story would be a good setup for a film. A militant, gun-toting nutcase trying to rally up the gangs in gotham, and he's an even match for Batman. Add in a little Talia al Ghul to connect back to the first movie and sex the whole thing up. Then maybe a dash of Riddler pulling everybody's strings (less camp, more like the mastermind he is in Hush) and you've got yourself a movie.

I would personally love to see them play up the mob angles from books like Long Halloween. Those did a good job of keeping Bats "real" while being an exciting story.

Yeah, but for me that's the Two-Face story. They've already done that story.

In my mind, Batman: Year One and Batman: The Long Halloween are tapped out. Joker has a lot of potential, but god who would they get to replace Ledger?

It seems like the next step as far as the comics go is Dark Victory, and they've said they're not doing a Robin story.

I'd actually prefer Glover over Depp as Riddler. The man's a lunatic, and is so disturbingly intense it goes well beyond funny.

For why I say he's a lunatic, look on Youtube for his appearances on Letterman. Took me a while to figure out what he was doing. Links here:

First appearance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALapHYNSmoA
Second: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFePPdrRQdE

And finally, him talking about it in 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIdnEPYwUNg&feature=related

As for what he was up to and why it's so cool, the first appearance he was not appearing as Crispin Glover; he was appearing as Rubin, a character from a later movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaNf-A_3fC4). Second appearance he was also not appearing as Crispin Glover, but George McFly. My supposition is that Letterman was not aware of what was going to happen.

The man would be awesome as the Riddler.

I feel really bad about it, but when someone suggested Mark Hamill, who did voiceover for the best animated incarnation of the Joker ever, I imagined them using some kind of morbid puppeteer to make Heath Ledger's (preserved) corpse do the acting, and Hamill doing the talking.

I think I might actually have to slam my hand in a door for being such a terrible person.
