I'm a fan of most HBO shows so this is getting me excited as I can't stand most attempts at the Fantasy Genre in film.  "Game of Thrones" is a show of political intrigue set in a Medieval Europe world (actually N. Ireland) the bordering lands have a different feel.  The southern people and land invoke Dark Sun style to me.  There is a land to the North very icy maybe Viking style.  I don't really see any magic in this trailer but they mention supernatural forces.

Check out a preview here: www.hbo.com/#/game-of-thrones/about/vide...

Plus it has Boromir

I saw the preview a few months ago and there is a huge cast with lots of well known actors in it including a few from the LotR cast and a couple from the Stargate t.v. series cast. Looks very promising anyways.

This is based off of an amazing fantasy novel series called A Song of Ice and Fire. by George R. R. Maryin.  A Game of Thrones is the first novel in the series.  I would highly recommend this series to everyone on these forums.

Not to mention that it is based upon arguably the best fantasy series in the history of the genre... at least the best I have read in 20+ years of reading fantasy! There is magic, but it is very subtle and not overused. Westeros is most definitely NOT a high fantasy setting, which makes the appearance of the supernatural all that more interesting when it does happen.

I was wondering when they would try to put this series to film.

This looks good. I'll keep my hopes up.

**Warning!!**

Great novel series that is unfinished.  The author is YEARS behind in his own timeline for the next novel release...

But beyond that, yes, this is a GREAT fantasy series.  And I say this as a guy who doesn't really care for fantasy novel series'...  :-)

The Song of Ice and Fire novels are some of the most enjoyable I've ever read (as far as fantasy fiction goes).  I only recently discovered them but I feel it was the perfect time for me.  If I had read the series when I was too young, I might not have 'got it'.  Can't wait to see the movie.

Speaking of finally getting it, I also recently re-read the original Dune novel (which reminded me very much of A Game of Thrones).  Now, I gotta find that movie on DVD (which was originally on Sci-Fi channel I believe).

I wouldn't.

At least not until Martin gets his ass in gear and finishes the next book, dammit!

I thought it was written alongside Feast for Crows?

(note, this has been driving my friend, a HUGE Martin fan, crazy.  What the heck happened to the next book?  He's old enough that him pulling a Robert Jordan is a valid concern for his fans.

Personally, I really liked the series at first read-through, and then put it down when I tried to read it again.)

If I read the website correctly, the show debuts in April?  Looks like I'll have to make room in the budget to add HBO to the tv bill.

So, because he hasn't released the fifth book yet, you wouldn't recommend others to read the (extremely enjoyable) first four books?  That seems...pretty silly, sorry.  He's not even that far behind, sorry.  The time between the release of the third and fourth novel was...five years (2000 and 2005, respectively).  The release time since the fourth novel is currently...a little over five years.
The editor has said that all but five chapters of the fifth novel are finished, and those five chapters are at a solid stage, not completely unwritten.  Mind you, these are books with between 46-82 chapters in them!!!  So at worst, the book is 89% done, but might be 94% done.  That seems pretty darned reasonable to me.

Sorry if the pace isn't what you want, but me?  I prefer a great novel released when it is than a pressured and rushed release that isn't up to snuff.

I mean, look at The Dark Tower series.  There is another series where there were six years between releases of volumes three and four, and another seven years between the release of volumes four and five.  It happens.  It isn't the end of the world.  It doesn't, IMO, take from the enjoyment of the reading of the first four (fantastic) novels.  At all.

I completely stand by my recommendation of A Saga of Ice and FireTongue out

Yeah. Better than arriving at the end of book 4 and then having to wait years until the story finally continues at a time when you have forgotten all the plot hooks and characters anyway.

The time between the release of the third and fourth novel was...five years (2000 and 2005, respectively).  The release time since the fourth novel is currently...a little over five years.

Which IMO is already too long. By the time I got the fourth novel I couldn't remember who 80% of the named people were and what they were doing in the last 3 books.

Except that it won't finish the story and good luck remembering anything from book 5 when book 6 releases in 2017

Yep. Looks like we disagree on the value in recommending unfinished tales that suck you deep into personalities, only to leave you hanging on the edge of your seat for years.

You mention that the publisher said he is 89% finished. It wouldn't be as bad if he were 89% finished after working on it for five years. But he was 89% finished when he concluded Book 4 (if we are to take the publisher at its word *and* we are to take Martin at his word in the Author's Note at the end of Book 4.

This series is one of the best I have ever read. But it is like hearing the set-up of the best joke ever told and the comedian refuses to deliver the punch line.

I didn't realize it was a book series until just now.  It also appears to already be a board game, RPG and have a card game too.

I'm only recently getting back into gaming so I missed all that.

Still should be a good show HBO does some good work.

Slightly off topic I felt that the book Public Enemies which became the Johnny Depp Dillinger movie of the same name would've been much better as a HBO Series.  Instead of Boardwalk Empire imagine Steve Buscemi as Clyde Barker or Alvin Karpis.

Spare a thought for poor Brienne, who has been hanging from a tree in Schroedinger's Cat limbo for five freaking years.

Indeed. I'm sure HBO will have the first episode or two available for free download to try to hook people into getting HBO. I'll watch what I can get for free, and if interested I'll pick up the box set when it comes out.

I read the first four Song novels in pretty rapid succesion in the latter half of this past year, they're good reads. I am rather disappointed that the author seems to be sitting on the next book, but I don't lose any sleep or go nerdrage over it.

The next book in the series was originally part of a feast for crows, but the book got too long (even by the standards set by the previous books) so it was split into two books. I wish martin would finish the damn book already.

I've been pining for them for so long... I'd love to have a Night Watch pack and Rattleshirt. And maybe Mance Ryder, to be used as a bard. And the Hedgeknights. And Sansa Stark. And...

Hey, that midget is probably the most intelligent character and surely the only Lannister worth any of that Lannister gold. The book is written in character point of view sections rather than chapters and Tyrion is one of the most often featured one.
I really like this actors voice, it fits Tyrion.

I thought Tyrion was normally clean shaven, and that on those rare occasions when he let it grow in it was a mix of black and blond? I think it's mentioned after he gets his facial scar. I'll try to remember to look it up later.

Well, LotR had Hobbits; maybe that's what he meant.

Btw, I did today a pic of some of the Ice and Fire characters. I would show it, but I don't have a scanner handy.
