No, it's warming. Mean temperature? Rising. It's warming.

Because there is a higher temperature, we see more moisture in the atmosphere. More moisture means that during winter, when it gets cold, it snows more. Just because it's still cold in the winter doesn't mean that the world-wide average isn't higher. It is higher.

There is a very famous survey of climate science papers published in peer-reviewed journals, to figure out the actual level of controversy regarding global warming in the actual scientific community (as opposed to the media stories regarding the controversy in the scientific community). The results, after reviewing over 900 peer-reviewed papers? 100% agreed that global warming is happening, and if causes were mentioned, they agreed it was thanks to humans. Every single time. That's not a conspiracy, that's all the people who actually know what they're talking about realizing, "Oh, ****. We're all hosed." (The money is with the oil companies - if you want to make lots of cash, publish stuff that says global warming isn't happening. The oil companies will very happily bankroll your future research and buy you a hummer, so long as you reach the conclusions they like.)

The earth's temperature is kept at equilibrium by a number of complex and inter-related systems. We humans are coming along and disrupting those systems, all 6 billion of us. We are interfering with these systems on a massive and catastrophic level. It's not a case of "How can we be so arrogant as to think we could affect something as large as the earth?" It's a case of, "How can we blithely mess up these systems and expect things to carry on?"

The earth will survive, life will carry on in some fashion, but we won't. Some remnants of humanity may carry on, but not anywhere near like what we're doing now. Honestly, the whole thing is depressing. There are just too many of us consuming too many resources and that is not going to change, at least not enough. Heck, I'm even thinking seriously of going ahead and having that third kid my wife wants. We're all dangerously irresponsible, and we are all going to pay the price.

Yeah, what I see is a bunch of people talking about the level of funding received by way of comparison. But here's how science actually works: people propose their research, get their funding, and publish their conclusions. That means the vast array of people who are publishing their conclusions are getting their funding, doing their research, and reaching the same conclusions. Maybe because they're right?

I live and work in Japan, and I'm an English teacher. This is a beautiful illustration of how science really works. My student is a biochem professor, and he's researching all kinds of cool stuff. In particular, his presentation that I helped him with yesterday is being presented today. Has to do with coral spawning and symbiosis with sea grass. His hypothesis was that the sea grass was releasing a chemical signal to attract the coral during its larval stage, when coral polyps are actually mobile. The result? The sea grass extract proved toxic. Those are the results he's publishing. However, the simple fact is that the sea grass does much better when it's living with the coral. So something is going on to help attract the coral larvae, but it isn't what he thought.

The temperature of the earth right now is higher than it has been for the last thousand years. This is fact, not supposition. All the evidence supports it. There are some disputes about the exact temperature at different periods, but that does not change the simple fact that it is now warmer than for the last thousand years. If the hypothesis is proved wrong that it's greenhouse gasses, clearly something else is going on. I have no doubt that people much smarter than me are working on the problem.

As for the alleged data faking, well... some guy is claiming to have hacked into the servers. Either he's faking some stuff, or they're faking some stuff. I'm not a believer in conspiracy theories.

It's a good thing that it has nearly been this hot in the past.

And that's just within human history. Go back further and you get the Mesozoic, Permian, and Carboniferous, as well as others I don't recall. And that's just the periods where the planet was significantly warmer, discounting the pre-life times which were much, much warmer than any of those.

And those when those temperatures changed? We tend to call it a new geological age with mass extinctions to mark it. We are directly causing mass extinctions through overfishing and habitat destruction. Go us?

The easiest way to see how unscientific GW happens to be is to see how much it has changed.
It was caused Global Warming at first, but they changed the name to Anthropomorphic Global Warming. (this way they can say it is happening if it gets cold too).
In the IPCC reports, " the summaries of its reports are agreed between scientists and representatives of governments." (because government policy makers know what results should be reached.).

It is only a matter of time before people realize that GW is a "hypothesis" that can't be tested. When 2100 rolls around and Florida isn't under water, the temperature isn't 3-7 degrees hotter, and it becomes clear that the climate is always changing, perhaps people will be smart enough to realize that they were had.

If you want to read about other problems with the IPCC report 4.

Just take our fishing methods. It was so efficient know we have quotas to prevent extinctions of cod fish. Unless you believe it was extraterrestrials who took all the fish away.

Our habits? Well take global warming, it is slowly killing of polar bears by melting the ice caps.

So our man made gases are also causing other planets in the solar system to also experience global warming at approximately the same rate as earth?  Astonishing!  Gobal warming scientists are full of hot air.  The temperature is going up, but it's due to the sun, not mankind.

Whatever you think about Global Warming or whatever you want to call it, you have to admit there's some serious credibility issues with some of the more high profile followers of the theory.  When events like the Grammys and Oscars can (and did) claim to have events with 'zero carbon footrint', I'm sure it does wonders for awareness.  Unfortunately, it's also totall bullplop.  Cuz to get that 'zero carbon footprint' label, they just gave Algore and his cronies an asston of cash by way of purchasing 'carbon credits' or whatever from them.  Yeah, total lies.  Oh, that and Algore and many others like to travel by jumbo jet and then massive motorcade and it's easy to see why one could be left wondering how seriously even the heads of the movement take it.  I mean, that's like the head of PETA showing up for a rally in a fur coat while eating veal.

Obviously the credibility of the person doesn't necessarily effect the credibility of the theory, but if you wonder why people wonder, well, there ya go.  And then there's the political end of things.  Older countries are falling behind some upstarts, those upstarts are fueling their progress via fossil fuels and then, suddenly, this becomes quite literally the end of the world.  So, to me, when someone questions the common word on this deal, they may be doing so from a perfectly sane and rational perspective.  Just stuff to keep in mind.

Meh, the reality of it is that there's some shady folk that are looking to profit from it and that's what some people see.  If the guy that's running around giving us his best Chicken Little impression is also a guy that makes money from people buying credits from him and his pals, well, that seems a bit off.  And there's also that political element I mentioned.  Atop all that you have the fact that science is fallible.  I'm not even gonna approach giving my opinion on all of this so keep that in mind, but here's an example of why people don't take scientific study as the word of god: are eggs good or bad for you?  Changes every year or two, doesn't it?  So we 'know' a lot of stuff.  And those quotes?  The most important part.  Because what we 'know' today could well be the source of endless amusement for our grandkids down the road.  All I'm saying is that it isn't just a 'Republicans hate Dems and Dems tend to say they believe in global warming' thing.  That's too simple.  And if that's the way people that believe see it, they'll never change anyone's opinion on it because they won't think it's even possible.  And that sells their cause short.
#36

Maxperson

The facts remain that 98% of scientists consider global warming/climate change to be very real, not even a theory anymore (since pesky data are there to back it up).

THe problem for most people that I know is not whether global warming exists.  It's whether mankind is responsible.  The fact that global warming is happening currently on other planets in the solar system is a strong indicator that it's something with the Sun.  Add to the credibility issues with the speakers and many scientists.  The fact that every few months they tell us, "Sorry, our models were wrong.  We now KNOW that X will happen in Y years.", only to change that a few months later because their model was wrong.  And the fact that they can't accurately tell me what the whether will be like next week. And then opposing science, etc.

With all of that, it's no wonder so many people are skeptical that we are responsible for it.  Now, does that mean we should not look into green options?  Absolutely not.  Even if we aren't warming the planet, pollution still harms the enviroment in other ways, as well as harming animals and humans.  Finding cheap, alternatives is paramount.  Rushing to use expensive alternatives is stupid.

Same can be said for the climate denialists. They stand to make a buck out of people who will always say global warming is a myth, from all the book sells, the interviews and the invitation to speak at public events...

I think you may be confusing how the scientific method is supposed to work, and how it actually does.

(The money is with the oil companies - if you want to make lots of cash, publish stuff that says global warming isn't happening. The oil companies will very happily bankroll your future research and buy you a hummer, so long as you reach the conclusions they like.)

Yeah, you aren't one to believe in conspiracy theories. . Yeah, 2000 times more money than big oil and I am the conspiracy theorist. We might need to take action to save the universe though.

Correct, no one thought it was important. However, it turns out that the planet did keep records.

It's a good thing that it has nearly been this hot in the past.

Go us?

Prove it.

You saying so isn't proof.

If we start having 80degree weather during winter here in Ohio, I might start believing in Global Warming then, might.

Global warming is kind of not what is happening. Climate change would be more appropriate.

No, it's warming. Mean temperature? Rising. It's warming.

So our man made gases are also causing other planets in the solar system to also experience global warming at approximately the same rate as earth?  Astonishing!  Gobal warming scientists are full of hot air.  The temperature is going up, but it's due to the sun, not mankind.

Why are we killing the polar bears?
Wait, What!?

They should really just call it Climate Evolution.

True.  And do you think those people positively or adversely effect their side's argument?

To that I point at something very visable, if you live in a big city, a very human created phenomenon and similar to what is happening to the planet. Smog.

Smog =/= warming though.  Smog = poor health.

Smog=/=warming? Heat levels increase during smog episodes. Like in a green house.

The reverse is true.  When it gets really hot, the heat traps the smog.  I live here.  The smog doesn't come first.
