| #1athzarJul 25, 2008 22:08:52 | So I was grabbing some paintbrushes at Games Workshop today, and noticed that a bunch of people were standing around, waiting to purchase the new fifth edition of Warhammer 40k. I'd love to play it, aside from the entrance fee ($300ish for a starter set!), but I was still curious enough to see what any of you think about the new edition. Have you tried it yet? Is it as drastic a change as 4e? Less drastic? More? Do any of you play Warhammer 40k? What about Warhammer? I was considering buying some Warhammer minis to help flesh out my D&D campaigns (and because I find painting relaxing). I also hear that they did a new version of Warhammer a little while back; is that similar to the 40k change? Wow, I'm rambling. Apologies. |
| #2ocarina_guyJul 26, 2008 0:57:08 | Yeah. I heard it changed only a little, what amounts to half an edition (3.0 to 3.5-esque). I play a little 40k, but not much. Never really liked wargaming. Also, my resources aren't infinite. I suggest you buy some ONLY if your wallet can take it. |
| #3athzarJul 26, 2008 1:37:41 | That's the thing, my wallet can't take it, but I am curious about the genre. I've always enjoyed computer wargaming, and pen & paper RPGs, so tabletop wargaming always appealed to me, barring the wallet. So I won't be buying for another 2-3 years :D |
| #4annoyinglizardvoiceJul 26, 2008 14:52:53 | From what I've gathered, there aren't many major changes. You can buy the rules book separatly from game, and they have mentioned a starter game with two small armies for about £45. I've been playing wargames for ages and my advice to anyone interested in starting is start slowly, you don't have to buy it all at once. |
| #5farmer42_dupJul 26, 2008 22:05:25 | Yeah, 'nids are probably going to be the cheapest army to get into the game with, the 1500 PT nid army box runs around $200 USD or so. |
| #6stompie5Jul 28, 2008 11:17:50 | From what I heard and read, the new edition is a great improvement over the 4th edition, and have only heard good things about it. I plan on getting the hardcover rulebook whenever I can find it for a cheaper price. If you are interested in playing, wait for them to release the starter box set, because it comes with the rules, dice, measuring sticks, and 2 small armies (Orks and Space Marines) for a much lower price than starting from scratch. The only downside of the box set is that the rulebook wont have all the background information or art (which I LOVE), but its up to you. Also, be prepared to spend A LOT of time preparing the armies for the game, and if you do start, start small. |
| #7_jayne_cobb_Jul 28, 2008 11:35:47 | I've never played 40k before, but coincidentlaly I am going tonight to have a mate of mine - a real hardcore 40ker - teach me the game. I know he picked up the new edition last week so I'll ask him his opinion of the changes. |
| #8chapienJul 28, 2008 13:36:54 | I don't play Warhammer 40k, I want to play Warhammer, and I play a miniarure game called Warlord. What is up with the word "War" in these games???![]() |
| #9_jayne_cobb_Jul 28, 2008 14:12:55 | Superfunhappyhammer doesn't have quite the same ring to it. |
| #10chapienJul 28, 2008 14:50:40 | Superfunhappyhammer doesn't have quite the same ring to it. True, true, just it gets repetitive... only wargames I know without "War" in their title are C.A.V., Heroscape, D&D miniatures, and Dark Haven Legends. |
| #11farmer42_dupJul 28, 2008 19:57:37 | Don't forget Battletech, though it's technically a board game with mini rules available. And...Erm...Chrimson Skies...And...Well...Ok, that's about it. |
| #12Cpt_MichaJul 28, 2008 22:54:01 | I've not tried the rules out yet, (mostly because Gw made me choose. It or D&D.. guess which hobby wins. Yeah you guessed it) but from what I've seen there are alot of changes in there I am not too crazy about. Particularly involving vehicle defensive weapons rules, vehicle mobility, and happy appy assault rules that relegate shootists to being a thing of the past. (which the gunline was already really taken care of towards the end of 4th edition anyway.. only one or two armies could be accused of the gunline sin and that was Guard and Marines. ((not that it matters with guard anyway since they suck!)) Seemed like alot of solutions in search of a problem. |
| #13stompie5Jul 29, 2008 9:48:34 | I like my Imperial Guard Army... |
| #14Cpt_MichaJul 29, 2008 17:31:49 | But you have to admit in the scope of the other armies they are total pants. I like guard. I've got two guard armies. But they are no where near as good as my Tau, Necrons, and Black Templar are. |
| #15angel_bladeJul 29, 2008 18:08:11 | Well, if the money is too much and the rules are a mess, i would suggest taking a look at Warmachine. All metal minis, and a standard starting army is around 50 bucks. Much less minis to paint, and the rules are crazy-fun. I don't play it much now-a-days, not enough time, but I had a blast back in the day. A 500 pt game will only take between 1 and 2 hours, not the 8 hr marathons that are 40k. Anywho, just sayin... |

That's the game with the Warjacks right? I heard there were too many anti warjack weapons to make them worth using which is why I never got into it... Warjacks ftw. ftw. |
| #17stompie5Jul 30, 2008 9:39:50 | I'll be the first to admit that the Imperial Soldiers themselves suck, but they are the common man against a universe of horrors. I've only had the pleasure to fight against Dark Angels and Orks though, but I usualy win about half the time. I've crushed them a couple of times, thanks to the luck of the dice. What are your 2 guard armies made up of? I would love to get a Tau army, but sadly not enough money or people to play it with. Sigh, I'm gonna go eat ice cream now. |

Warjacks ftw. ftw. Yeah, that's the one. And that's the great thing about the game, there is anti-everything in this game. There is a lot of range and different strategies. I like warjacks, and play a pretty good 'jack-based game. some people like the troops, and some focus on the magic, and some rely on their Warcaster. there's just so many cool moves. One of my favorite is "bowling for Warjacks", You can charge with a heavy 'jack, and if you hit you do damage and your target flies backward. well, if your target is a 'jack who is covering troops or smaller warjacks, or even his warcaster, your target does damage to anything smaller he flies over (or through). Hee hee. the idea of a giant, magic-fueled robot crushing his own troops because he was blasted backwards by mine... makes me giggle like a school-girl. AngelBlade |
| #19williamhm75Jul 31, 2008 16:23:52 | The only thing I dont like about current eddition of 40k is that tyranids and chaos are way overpowered. As it stands it is almost impossible for an imperial guard army to beat tyranids, and takes a lot of luck to beat chaos. |
| #20nednedAug 01, 2008 16:08:46 | I agree to Chaos being overpowered but 'nids... just don't let them get you in cc and they're easy. Only thing to worry about is 'stealers with scuttlers. They can assaul in the first turn if they're lucky! (Start 18in away for infiltration, 6in move, d6 run, 6in assault.) Not good. But $250 dollars for a starter set?! Here in England they're £50 whick is about $100. The thing that makes 40k so good it the background, especially for the Witch Hunters. "You're a heretic! Let's punish you by crucifiing you on the front of a killer robot and send you off to fight deamons!" |
| #21bandamanAug 08, 2008 12:42:41 | For those of you who want to play 40k but can't because of the money investment. Consider picking an army you think looks cool, you can buy the codex ($20) 1 box of troops ($30 to$35) some paint ($2.50 per pot) and some super glue ($6) I don't recommend buying the huge starter sets unless you already know what your doing. You end up with tons of pieces and its easy to get overwhelmed. If you just buy 1 box at a time, build them and paint them, and when their done, buy another box. It's cheaper (more expensive in the long run but 35 bucks here and there is easier than 200 bucks all at once) your army will look better, and you will generally enjoy the hobby more IMO. Also the new edition rules ($40) which you dont need to buy until your ready to play is quite different than the older rules, but superior IMO. |
