*shrug*

Squirrels are rats with fluffy tails. People wouldn't be all up in arms if it was a rat.

Meh. Squirrels, like raccoons are pretty tempermental and violent critters.  I'm okay with him pepper spraying it.

I can understand spraying an animal that's acting aggressively, especially if it might have rabies, but something that small? It's kind of ridiculous, like using a sledgehammer on a thumbtack. Nobody could find, say, a box to trap it in or something? It's really not that difficult a concept. All these people in the video--what were they doing just standing around like idiots?

Even a mouse can break skin.  I wouldn't want to risk a bite in order to not spray that squirrel.  A box still allows it the chance to bite you and squirrels are very quick little beasties.

Edit: By the way, I see you posting around more than just that one thread now.  It seems like we've suckered, er, pulled you over here.  Welcome to the dark side.

I wonder what the odds of that happening are?

Much lower than my getting salmonella or something from red meat.  Long odds, I don't fear loooooong odds.  Getting bit by an agressive rabid squirrel that is within a foot or two (box range) is big enough worry to warrant some government intervention.  Preferably, animal control Wink

Maybe you should avoid getting into situations where you can be attacked by a small furry animal. The government shouldn't be telling you where you can go.

lol. We should start a contest to see who can get a thread trolled the quickest.

How would you define a thread being trollled?

You can't.  While it's often obvious it can sometimes be subjective.  It was just an amusing thought.

Maybe I'm just a softie, then.

...Okay, that's not a maybe. I can't generally bring myself to deliberately harm much of anything. I'll kill mosquitos, flies, and wasps, ants if there's an infestation, some creepy-crawlies--earwigs, parasites, definitely cedar bugs (god those things irritated me growing up), but much of anything else? Not a chance. Certainly not a mammal.

I'm mostly just coming back to check on the Lurker thread; once that dies, I'll probably disappear until the next interesting thread in the Recent Posts sidebar. ;)

I suppose I am pragmatic then. So long as my IFF is functioning properly, I won't deliberately harm most creatures (unless it is for an experiment). Should there be any aggression directed towards me, I respond to neutralise the aggression (sometimes unpeaceably).
To use an example

Last year a pair of robin birds decided to nest upon a luminaire which is installed on a wall of my current domicile. As I exited the structure, they would harass me as they have just laid eggs not long ago at this point. The resolution was to make use of the trash receptacle underneath the luminaire and knock the nest into the rubbish. The robins did not return this year (at least to nest upon the luminaire once more).

*takes bait*

Wut?  So I assume you're vegan, then?  Er, even though vegans are responsible for many, many tiny critters' deaths themselves.  Cuz, if you're not vegan, you're an even bigger hypocrite than if you were.  Cuz, see, you eat animals.  That means they, you know, die.  This squirrel?  It hurt for a bit and then was checked out by animal control and released.  It's ok.  But hey, if temporarily blinding an aggressive and possibly rabid animal is worthy of being shot in the street or crushed by a drunk driver, cool.  Way to be a human being, man.  You're an example for the rest of us.
____________________

For reals: there was every reason for the officer to suspect the squirrel was rabid.  It was approaching him threateningly no matter what he did.  He could have shot it.  He could have tried to stomp its squirrel guts out.  Instead, he employed less than lethal means to neutralize the threat and nobody got hurt.  Not even the squirrel, it seems.  So how could any sane being have a problem with that?

(by 'for reals' I meant 'for reals and here's some bait' )
