#1 Robin_Hoodlum Dec 25, 2010 9:54:15	My oldest son and I got 3 or 4 starter sets and 2-3 booster packs for Heroscape. I then promptly went online and ordered a bunch more booster packs. Holy Cow! Do we have a crap-ton of Heroscape stuff!!! My son also got an Xbox 360 and a bunch of games, but you are only fooling yourself if you think I won't play it too! I got a new wallet, a WVU Mountineer hoody, Steelers trivia book, and a Steelers Uno deck. And I think when I get home, the wife is going to have a few other items for me. I'm guessing some military history books and/or a wargame.

#4 oxybe Dec 25, 2010 10:21:48	when i last went home on monday (i'm working throughout the festivities) my mum gave me my wrapped gifts. what i opened this morning: socks, underwear, shampoo, toothpaste, a chocolate orange, pants, new coat, comforter.  everyone at work got a blanket that fits VERY nicely in my backpack, next to my umbrella, towel & game boy. it's a nice little travel blanket.

Hand-cranked brass coffee grinder that is currently out of stock. The company I ordered it from is going to let me know next week some time when it will be in. It grinds the coffee real fine to make Turkish coffee (or Greek coffee if you prefer). I'm going to get the proper copper coffee pot later, from Amazon, who want about 3600¥ for it. A little expensive, but free shipping and cheaper than ordering it internationally. More importantly, I got to watch my little kids while opening their mountains of gifts. The boy got a Japanese patrol-car toy to ride/push with his feet, which he loves. My daughter got a Licca doll complete with Mosburger (it's a fast food chain here) outfit, and a Mosburger playset which she's been asking very nicely for. She was also thrilled with the jewelry box, not that she has any real jewelry. Christmas isn't so big here, so I had to work Christmas Eve, though only for half an hour because a couple of students didn't show up.

#14 mock26 Dec 25, 2010 23:37:17	Absolutely nothing.  For a number of years now I have convinced all my friends and family to donate to charity in my name instead of giving me gifts.  I really do not need anything and there are people out there who are a lot worse off than me.  I would much rather see a needy child get a good winter coat, hat, gloves, and/or pair of boots and some toys than for me to receive some gift that I really do not need (and often do not want!). However, I did treat myself to a nice bottle of 14 year rum cask Balvenie single malt Scotch.

My husband warned me he went a little crazy, and I did not expect the Kinect at all, nor all of the Fables books (I expected some of them, as I keep a Wish List on Amazon for him for just such occasions, but not all of them!).
#18 iqwinn Dec 26, 2010 9:48:14	My wife and I gave each other an iPod touch.  It is just so freakin' cool!  Unbearably cool!  The thing has a good battery, holding a decent charge.  We also got each other wall calendars (puppies and kitties and nature scenes for her, Star Trek and Hubble images for me :D ).  She also got me a large-print Bible (my middle-aged eyes don't see words as well as they used to) and I got her a 10-key pad kit for her laptop (she wants to use it for book-keeping).

Gave my nephew Epic Mickey for the Wii and a Star Wars Lego watch, gave my sister and her husband gift cards to one of their favorite restaurants, and gave my mom an IOU for dinner out. (If I had given her gift cards she would have ended up paying for me on them, what's the point in that, right? Besides, she's always saying how she worries if I don't get in contact with her for a week or two. I just think she's lonely.) At the end of a BYOB Christmas party, I gave my hosts the untouched bottle of Gentleman Jack I had brought with me. I don't really go nuts with Christmas, I'm not a very celebratory kind of guy.

It came up when I did a search from it but maybe you know it under a different name.  The word "mobile", used in reference to the swinging bits o' junk commonly placed above cribs, is derived from the works of famous American artist/scultor Alexander Calder. One of the types of sculptures he was famous for had moving parts, sometimes many of them. These sculptures were dubbed "mobiles". (He later made other sculptures devoid of such moving parts, which were called "stabiles".) Saw a documentary on the man many years ago. Couldn't remember the name, but a quick Google search fixed that. And, yes, we call them "mobiles" (mo-beels) in America.

But the name mobile (mo-beel) was given to the sculptures by someone who accented it differently. And it just stuck. Oddly, the "mo-beel" prnounciation does exist in American English, but generally only when it becomes part of another word. Such as automobile (aw-tow-mo-beel). And of course, dirivitives of that, such as Batmobile (bat-mo-beel).

#26 toastedamphibian Dec 27, 2010 16:12:15	I work in an office in a werewarehouse, with another set of offices above me, a large electrical panel on one wall, a breakroom with amicrowave on the other, a steel wall full of wires on the third, and a full 100ft of heavy machinery on the fourth. Above me are 2 layers of high intensity florescent lights, faxes, copiers, printers. The room I am in contains no fewer than 4 comupters, 3 phones, a fax, 2 printers, a sonicater, 2 viscomiters, a densitomiter, a vacume pump, an FTIR scanner, a PH meter, 4 stir plates, a drying oven, 3 balances (one heated), and an electrical ice bath. And the lights have a motion detector. So, what this all adds up to, is piss poor radio reception for me.

Dood, we got a 'drink like a fish' game from her parents that we plan on breakin' in on New Years.  It's got 6 shot glasses, a boat, a fishing rod (that you can actually reel) and some fish with stuff on 'em tellin' ya what ya can do.  While I'm not one for drinkin' games (aside from 'drink the beer'), I have some friends that may get a kick out of it.  Oh, and bocce on Move is way more fun than it should be.  Also like the frisbee golf thing. What I got: That huntin' jacket a while back, a saw (miter on a nice stand), Borderlands and Bioshock2 (with Madden comin' soon), a headlamp for around the house, some candy from the kids I teach (and they managed to somehow nail it - they got me my absolute favorite) and a gift card for Gander Mountain with some cash that I currently plan on tucking away for a bit until I can turn it into a Glock. The kid got the PS3, clothes, games and a super cool full auto Nerf gun. EDIT: Just remembered perhaps the best gift o' the days: For a few weeks my left eye has been bothering me.  I had new contacts and it still bothered me.  Well, I tried another new set and still had the same pain.  I kept removing the lens, cleaning it and puttin' it back in to no avail.  At one point, though, I noticed something in my eye and was able to remove it.  I, apparently, had a dog hair stuck behind my eyeball that would make an appearance only long enough to irritate the crap out of my eye.  Since its removal, things have been peachy keen.  So yeah, that was pretty awesome.

Yup.
