| #2baneofelvesSep 22, 2008 18:54:58 | The right way for things to be handled. Thanks for reminding me of OOtS |
| #3ocarina_guySep 22, 2008 18:58:31 | Ah, disintegrate, the ultimate Swiss Army Spell. |
| #4DKaseSep 22, 2008 23:58:46 | That's how I'd LIKE to play, but some of the group can't get around their modern day moral compass. |
| #5Horus_SungodSep 24, 2008 11:21:12 | It's not only about destroying evil without mercy, though. It's more about knowing a bad guy will inevitably escape justice (or escape that cardboard prison that holding him). Then it becomes more of a necessity to kill him. |
| #6umbralknightSep 24, 2008 12:04:18 | This was an amazing strip. Props to the Giant for knowing how to work his audience. |
| #7_jayne_cobb_Sep 24, 2008 12:08:27 | It's not only about destroying evil without mercy, though. In D&D terms it's a CG character preventing a LG character from letting the L get in the way of G. ;) |
| #8baneofelvesSep 24, 2008 23:21:59 | Why does being good keep you from slaying an evil person who has no intention of stopping? And while the goody two shoes talk about whether it's 'right' or not, kill him. I had a Bomber Man (homebrew class) that just shoved a lit bomb down the guys throat if he deserved it. But he didn't do that to everyone. Just the ones that had no remorse or intention to stop. The others he would give a fair chance. I hate those characters that think all villains can be redeemed. They're wacko. |
| #9drackthorSep 24, 2008 23:33:43 | I think a bit of a misconception is going on where some take this as "Well, it worked, so it's the coolest/best way to do it." While I take it as murdering every single villain who has surrendered is not the right way to go, in fact, it's more or less wanton disregard for life. The real bad-assery, IMO, is that they are racing against the clock to save the entirety of existence from being om-nom-nommed by a god-killing abomination, and this clown wants to play footsie over one measly city, and so V has decided that, given the circumstances, icing this joker and getting back to the important stuff is the necessary, if harsh, way to go. And yes, I did stop for a moment and applaud my computer monitor in a moment of nerdy adoration for Vaarsuvius' badassery. |
| #10_jayne_cobb_Sep 25, 2008 9:17:55 | The real bad-assery, IMO, is that they are racing against the clock to save the entirety of existence from being om-nom-nommed Err…can you translate the highlighted part into English, please? |
| #11zombie_babiesSep 25, 2008 9:47:28 | Err…can you translate the highlighted part into English, please? I'll take a shot: eaten? Keep the world from being eaten/devoured? |

| #13_jayne_cobb_Sep 25, 2008 14:14:04 | So it is one of these stupid locats-style internet memes, then? That would eplain both why I don't know it and why it is stupid. |
| #14zombie_babiesSep 25, 2008 14:21:26 | I am slightly disappointed with myself for making a semi-accurate guess. People actually look at that stuff? ![]() |
| #15ADHadhSep 25, 2008 14:31:37 | I am slightly disappointed with myself for making a semi-accurate guess. People actually look at that stuff? Well, they aren't gonna make memes by themselves, they need those >9000 views to live. On topic: it seems that V didn't even knew if Kubota was evil. Does that sound like your groups as well? I hope not. |
| #16baneofelvesSep 25, 2008 14:38:16 | Not mine. We make sure we have the right villain before he gets to swallow bombs. Drackthor, quick question: Why is it so bad to kill a villain who won't stop killing? He surrendered, but just in the hopes we would allow him to live and go to court, where he could contact allies to help him escape if he can't 'prove' himself to be innocent. |
| #17ADHadhSep 25, 2008 14:53:01 | Not mine. We make sure we have the right villain before he gets to swallow bombs. Let me answer: PCs get a side-quest about preventing the villain from doing so? ;) |
| #18baneofelvesSep 25, 2008 18:02:33 | And prolong a finished adventure instead of moving on to a new one. We typically don't do that. Why waste all that time getting a scumbag who ENJOYS causing suffering into a jail, which he could escape from, and continue his acts, when you could just end the problem by killing him and burning the remains? Just for clarification, we only take the law into our hands with the really sick ones. Bandit lords and other small fries like that get to court. The ones with genocidal tendencies and other things along those lines get to go BOOM. So we don't just kill any villain. Just the ones who have no respect for life and enjoy killing. The kind that kills just to kill. Like Nightmare. |
| #19annoyinglizardvoiceSep 25, 2008 18:17:11 | If you know they're just going to get away with it and try again, you haven't acomplished anything by just stopping them once. OotS rocks! When do we get Roy back? |
| #20drackthorSep 25, 2008 22:52:18 | Alright, first off, say chums, this is the internet, if someone uses a phrase from it, make sure to decide that you are above it, and therefore deserve a pat on the ol' back there for taking the cool route. You sure do look neat by displaying that adolescent climb-the-totem-pole-by-pushing-others-down attitude. Honestly, if someone on a web forum says a phrase and you decide it's stupid, well golly that's just dandy, but how about you keep it to yourself, because it doesn't add anything to the topic at hand, and makes us divert from an interesting thread topic to defend one's self from passive-aggressive nonsense. And now, back to our previously scheduled post. Drackthor, quick question: Why is it so bad to kill a villain who won't stop killing? He surrendered, but just in the hopes we would allow him to live and go to court, where he could contact allies to help him escape if he can't 'prove' himself to be innocent. What exactly is the difference between a villain who kills and will continue killing for no reason, and a Hero that decides to weigh logic against emotion, with the almighty logic winning out. He might escape, and he may kill more people, so why spare him? Because he won't be the only villain the PCs will ever face. There will be more, and more, and more. Eventually the Villain that won't stop killing has only one difference with the hero who won't stop killing: Explanation. Now I'm not saying every villain needs to go to jail and serve his time when dispatching him would save more lives, but when the default choice goes from capture to kill, it's no longer Hero vs. Villain, it's Murderer With Socially Accepted Reasoning vs. Murderer With Socially Unaccepted Reasoning. EDIT: And darn it all, I couldn't even be at peace with what I had first typed up. The truth is, I'm not a 4chan-goer, I'm not a /b/tard or whatever you want to call it. I'm a guy who found a few goofy images with a funny phrase attached to it and got a few chuckles from it; and if that's an offense towards the newly-appointed Internet Police, get out the ball & chain. I have a great respect toward you, Jayne, your posts are very intelligent and agreeable usually, but this crassness you've been showing recently makes me a sad camper. And to the other person that was ashamed to guess properly, I don't know you, but I'm sure you're a fine fellow yourself. Thanks for hearing me out, and my apologies if any of the above sounds offensive, but if people swing at me, I swing back. |
| #21JohnLynchSep 26, 2008 4:10:16 | when the default choice goes from capture to kill, it's no longer Hero vs. Villain, it's Murderer With Socially Accepted Reasoning vs. Murderer With Socially Unaccepted Reasoning. In that case my players aren't heroes (at least not last game before I killed them all at level 1 ). Although I tend to disagree they weren't heroes. They would have eventually tried to save the world. If that isn't being a hero I don't know what is. |
| #22knights_discipleSep 26, 2008 4:29:36 | In that case my players aren't heroes (at least not last game before I killed them all at level 1 But how are they saving the world? By this I mean, at what point would you say that "saving the world" doesn't balance out other actions? If they sacrifice a town full of innocents (not necessarily literally, but essentially trade their lives) to save the world, they're still heroes, right? Or does that make them anti-heroes? Or maybe I'm just getting tired of the "darker and edgier" trend out there. That's not to say that OOTS wasn't neat. And V was totally in character...but V's likely TN. He doesn't care about Good, necessarily. Elan, meanwhile, is Chaotic, and got burned a couple times by "the system" already, so I'd imagine that's why he's not too riled. |
| #23calronmoonflowerSep 27, 2008 2:12:05 | They would have eventually tried to save the world. If that isn't being a hero I don't know what is. The world? That's where I keep all my stuff! It would depend on the reason wouldn't it. I remember in Slayers Try the demons of the world helped save it so they could try to destroy it themselves later. Also if someone goes and messes up the planet it would be worth conquering. |
| #24trissjSep 27, 2008 23:17:35 | That particular strip: HILARIOUS. I love OoTS. |
