What would the likely reaction be, both from the formerly trapped spirit and the dragon race in general? |

Any of the standard plot devices could work on opening them either ritual (the god of mischief made a ritual in case this ever came up, because you know, he/she is an a-hole), special weapon (goldomark covered this), or really magical landmark (think Mount Doom). 2. Depending on their purpose in your campaign world and what orb it is, it may be really good (a powerful good dragon is free and able to help bring a new golden age for the world), may be really bad (typical douchbaggery), or it may be really anticlimactic (the dragon is so old that it is senile, rheumatic, and doesn't know who or what it is anymore). |

Standard entry in the 3.5e DMG says "the bearer forever earns the emnity of all dragonkind forever" but surely attempts to free the sprit bound within would have a chance at contravening that. While it is true enough that "The DM is always right" I prefer to use a bit more logic. |
