Jun 12, 2009 18:09:57 Hi! I'm new too D&D (like, a week new) and I was wondering what other types of RPGs (the table top variety) are any good? I've heard of something called the Storyteller system, but that's about it. Warhammer, though I've never seen it, or heard much about it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Jun 12, 2009 18:14:01 The storyteller system isn't bad. It's actually rather good. It's just not my cup of tea. I don't care for rolling pools of 10-sided dice. My favorite non-d20 system is the cinematic unisystem. You roll 1d10, add in the stated ability score and skill, then consult the table on your character sheet to see how many success levels you've gained. I personally find this to be a better way of determining multiple successes instead of rolling 1d10 for each point you possess in the given attribute plus the given skill (which is the storyteller way).

There is All Flesh Must Be Eaten, but that does not use the storyteller system (it was unclear if that was a requirement). They do have a lot of good splatbook titles for AFMBE. The most recent one is about pirates, called Argh! Thar Be Zombies!

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but Shadowrun came to mind. If you're looking for something outright anime, try BESM (Big Eyes, Small Mouth): the quintessential anime RPG. There are (I think) three editions of BESM, and I've only tried second edition, but I like it.
Actually, another question.

I know of the Vampire/Werewolf games, but are there any Zombie-inspired games too?

I'm not certain what you mean by "zombie-inspired", but Deadlands (or Deadlands Reloaded) has plenty of zombies in it.

A starting character in Mage: the Awakening can make zombies.

The World of Darkness has rules for running normal humans in a supernatural "real world" setting. Zombies are included, and I'm pretty sure there's a splatbook out there specifically for it, but I'm not 100% sure.

I haven't even played my first game of D&D yet (it's an agonizing moth away!), so I'm looking into other products that might interest me too. Does anybody know where I could possibly see a game in process? Or partake in an online style that would welcome a cheerful "n00b"?

Also, let me commend Storyteller once more for being the IMO best system I know and having an awesome fluff, and the Dark Heresy game, if you're into 40k.

I'd hate to say "Sure, I'll play", only to not be able to show up all the time, I'd hate to ruin everything for everyone else. Still, that link was great, even if I don't participate, I can still just watch and learn!

Just to dispel two common misconceptions, though: first, you need no pedigree to join - one of the best and most reliable players in one of my games is a complete newcomer to these forums who has posted nowhere else so far. Second, yeah, absenteeism sucks, but it happens to everyone, even the most long-time and dedicated DMs. As long as you let people know, it's fine.

In other words: if they run a game you play and would like to join, there's really no reason not to. Good hunting!

EDIT: Boondocker just opened up recruitment for a 4e game especially for those new to 4e and/or PbPing.

Storytelling (Storyteller was the old-system, Storytelling the new) in its most prominent form of World of Darkness. It is quite excellent for Horror and Modern games (with just normal humans). The base rules are in the "World of Darkness" cover normal humans and additional books cover stuff like Vampires, Werewolves, etc.
Call of Cthulhu/Trail of Cthulhu are excellent for turn of the century, investigative games oriented around the Cthulhu Mythos. Call and Trail are different systems, so whichever suits you most.
Cthulhutech takes Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Anime and Cthulhu Mythos and combine it into one awesome whole. It is set in the future where humanity has learned of the horrors in the universe and is combatting it as hard as they can. You can be a pilot of mecha taking on Mi-Go biomecha or a Trooper taking on Fishmen of Dagon, etc.
Shadowrun combines Cyberpunk and Fantasy. It is set in our world in the future and magic has returned as well as races like Elves, Trolls, Orcs and Dwarves. As such it mingles fantasy stuff with normal cyberpunk. Though it is easy to take out the fantasy to just do normal Cyberpunk.
Spirit of The Century is a pulp oriented game. The type where you fight Nazi's in the arctic and fly on rocketpacks and such.
