OTTer Ranking

Ok, this started - as most things here do - as a throwaway comment that a few people seem to have developed interest in.  The idea is that we create a ranking system and then all vote in it to assign each poster a Tavern Rank (or something like that).  It would confer a point total and rank title of some sort on all participants and would not be static.  The ranking will be fluid and change as the Taverngoers' opinions change.  At any rate, the objective of this thread is to layout what we've got so far as rules go in order to sort of take the temperature and see what sort of participation - if any - we'd get, to establish the actual rank titles themselves, to allow open rule discussion to fine tune the system and to, potentially, elect our Rank Keepers (more on that later).  So here we go:

1) This is not something an OTTer has to do.  If you do not want to participate, just say so and we'll be sure to remove any posts relating to you (or prevent them from appearing at all if the request comes before the game starts) and make it clear that no votes - plus or minus - will be considered for you.  Not everyone is gonna wanna play and that's a-okeydokey with us.  (NOTE: Pluisjen has elected not to participate)

2) The game will be 'run' by two OTTers that shall bear the title of 'Rank Keeper' (subject to change).  The participants will be divided into two groups and each Keeper will be assigned one.  Every participant may cast votes for other participants.  They will do so by means of PM to their assigned Keeper.  This is meant to ensure anonymity so make sure whichever Keeper you vote for is someone you trust.

3) Keepers cannot take votes for themselves.  Any vote for a Keeper must be sent to the other Keeper.

4) If you do not accept a rank, you are not allowed to vote.

5) Each participant may cast one vote per other participant per week.  Each vote is worth either +1 or -1 point.  A special vote of +3 or -3 is allowed each voter for one vote per week.  Once a vote is sent to a Keeper, it will be recorded in a tracking thread.  This will be done in two places: 1)In the body of the thread as a new post and 2) in a static post that is created by the Keeper for every participant.  This post is something participants can feel free to link to.  It will show the current point total for the participant and the current title as well as - possibly - some quote about the recent vote.

6) When casting a vote, each participant is encouraged to provide some sort of 'reason' for it that may or may not be included in the update.  Any quotes used will not show the quoted participant's name in order to keep anonymity.

7) Rank titles will be assigned to certain point total ranges and bestowed upon the participants that earn them.  They are not, of course, permanent and will be updated as point totals change.  Currently there are no titles named nor point ranges assigned.  This thread will be, in part, to discuss and assign these.  Toss us some range ideas and some titles, please.

8) Rank Keepers will be given that title through a vote (and if they want it).  It is up to the Tavern to decide who is going to see these PMs and update the rank titles and point totals of the players.  You may volunteer yourself for consideration.  So far Escher_Enigma has been suggested as a potential Keeper.  He has not, however, responded to that one way or the other.  Zombie_Babies has as well.  He doesn't care either way.    If you want it, toss your name in the hat and we'll start workin' on that vote.

Ok, that's sort of the meat of it.  I'm sure I'm forgettin' stuff so hopefully those familiar with the discussion so far will pop in and correct my mistakes and remind me of what I've missed.  If this is somethin' ya'all are up for, why don't we give it a shot?  It'll die like everything else we do but maybe it'll give us a li'l life for a while, who knows.  But yeah, this is the general idea and please give us your two cents.

We probably need a cooler name than "Ranker Keeper". Maybe something like Rank Guardians or Overseers or something.

And since I've been discussing this heavily, I'll also volunteer to be a Keeper to be fair (don't want to just make work for others).

Yeah, I didn't like that title at all, really, so I was hopin' someone would suggest something less lame.  I like Overseer myself.  And now we wait for others to post ...

I do not want to be a keeper/overseer/guardian. I'm terrible at noticing PMs and I already have to keep track of those on dA.
I also wonder how do we determine which OTTers will be managed by whom. There are many of us, even if only bunch are regulars.

Since this is all about some hierarchy thing, I guess the title of Hierarch is appropriate (even if my browser doesn't think it's an actual word for some reason).

I suggest a gradual regression to 0 for point totals, both as a way to reduce the long-term effects of "spikes" but also to better ensure that a point total reflects current opinion.  Perhaps a total score and a current score would be appropriate?

Also, I'm not interested in running the game.  I nominate Scypio since he seems interested in the idea.

I like the two point total idea.  More stats means more fun for stuff like this, IMO.

Vote for Scypio is recognized.  He's in the lead!

x2+3x points a week, where X is the number of players, seems like alot of ****ing work. Wouldn't it be easier to give everyone 3 votes a week, to either rase a poster 2 or lower them 2, and then automatically move everyones total one tic closer to zero each monday?

I imagine the pool will just be split in half and randomly assigned between the two Overseers. But maybe we should have a system so people can know which Overseer to send their PMs to without having to ask (for new players).

I like the idea of scores tending to zero over time. Maybe a drift of 10% or so back to zero after every week? We can probably work out the specific amount when we get an idea of how much scoring there'll be.

Hopefully not everyone will vote for everyone every week. For example, I have no idea who Dark_Stryke is so if we were playing this week, I'd abstain from voting for him.

But we should explore other possibilities for scoring. Your scoring system is definately a possibility, but I think I would want to increase the number of votes (maybe to 5).

Does anyone have suggestions for titles/ranks or anything?

(I'm starting to think we're going to spend more time planning it than playing, but that's fine. When I was a kid, I used to spend months "making games" only to play them once or twice before abandoning them.)

I vote EE as most trustworthy.

Noted.  (and expected )

Random is good.  The Overseers should also place an sblock in their sig containing the list of people that are supposed to submit their votes to.  It should also be a post in the official rules thread or whatever so the players have multiple locations to find the information.  The sig, I think, is the most important cuz it travels.

Does anyone have suggestions for titles/ranks or anything?

Yeah, we need these.  Maybe if we came up with a basic framework for the system itself - sort of a trial set up dealy.  Once we have an idea of how many point ranges we will be using, we'll know how many titles we'll need and how they'll relate to the other ranges.  That or we could do it on the fly while also allowing votes to change ranges and titles.

(I'm starting to think we're going to spend more time planning it than playing, but that's fine. When I was a kid, I used to spend months "making games" only to play them once or twice before abandoning them.)

I think we already did.    The way this is lookin', it may not even make it to game day one.

I'm going to need a signature? Man, that's weak =P But its probably the best way to inform people who you are overseeing.

This is how I got into the gamedesign business, so don't consider it a bad thing.

I think it was very much about giving things stats. I remember we used to use massive amount of characters (from comics primarily) with different stats and abilities. I guess I just like trying to quantify things, which kind of relates to this thread.

Only for as long as the game lasts.

Yeah, creating a framework that you can then test and implement is more rewarding than using it in a lot of cases, IMO.

Are we voting for the overseers?
ZB
EE
Scypio
any of these get my vote for overseer and since EE stepped down then I assume the seers will be ZB and Scyps.

I've been told that I appear to use the internet too much for personal use and the perception is bad so I will be unable to run the game and most likely won't be on much more. It's been fun, but stupid work is all about appearances.

See you guys around, feel free to PM since I probably won't be checking these boards much in the future since I normally just use them at work.

As a governmental employees, this sounds like a violation of basic rights.

Sadly, that is the entitlement mentality of a lot of gov't workers.
