I live in the UK. There is more to the story than is in the link in the OP. The dog was off its lead and ran over and jumped up at Buckland, trying to attack the bird as he was carrying it. The bird seems to have been quite docile up to that point. The dog's owners then f$£ked off and left Buckland and his girlfriend to cope with the mess on their own, which puts them firmly in "ignorant, thoughtless ****s" territory IMO.

It was certainly foolish for someone who wasn't trained in handling wild sea birds to pick one up like that. But the immediate cause of the attack seems to have been the dog.

The right thing to do in those circumstances would be to call the RSPB or RSPCA, who would have ensured there were no dogs running around loose on that stretch of beach before handling the bird.

Well, you coulda said that before now, you know.

Still, dog or not, the incident would never have happened had he not touched the bird in the first place. The people leaving is a dick move, but the rest all comes back to him doing something he shouldn't have. It's not that he deserved any of it, of course, but to blame it all on a dog doesn't seem right to me either.
