Saw a preview for it when I say Man of Steel (stupid movie BTW) and I thought it looked kinda interesting, is there an actual story to it or is it just giant robots fighting giant monsters?

It has a story but I am not going to lie to you....only enough to give an excuse to repeatedly see giant robots fight giant monsters.  The acting is good and there are human character struggles that make for a decent narrative, but it's all about the action.

Disappointing. One cool fight, but the characters and story are predictable. I expected more from Del Toro. He understand the codes of sci-fi and  such, but that doesn't mean he can write a story good story.

Is was apart of the spider-man mythos for a very short time...

In "Disassembled", Spider-Man develops the ability to shoot organic webbing from his wrists (after he recovered from being changed into a spider), and he stopped using his Web-shooters which was a great advantage for him because it allowed him to stop being dependent on web cartridges which allowed him limited shots. Once, while fighting Iron Man, Spider-Man supposedly "let loose", allowing his webbing to shoot out unrestrained. After he had stopped, he had generated enough webbing to completely encase Iron Man, and nearly fill the alley in which they were fighting with webbing. Since the beginning of the 2008 "Brand New Day" storyline, this power seems to have gone away, for reasons that are currently unknown

I will reiterate...
If you grew up liking Godzilla/Gamera...giant monster(Kaiju) films...you are going to love it.

That being said, if you never really enjoyed that genre, I don't think you would like it.  It is a modern homage to the classic kaiju film.

As a guy who grew up loving Godzilla/Gamera films, it most definitely was not a waste of money.

You expected more from Del Toro? Why? The guy is overrated. Same with Tarantino. Bunch of hacks that get more credit than they deserve.

I get why people say this about Tarentino (even if I disagree), but Del Toro, really? I'm not saying that in the sense of "Guillermo Del Toro is the greaaaaaatest!" but more that I think his reputation and his skill are pretty evenly matched. Pan's Labyrinth aside, the guy's reputation is basically "megageek that makes geeky action movies with great visuals and poor pacing." Pretty much every movie he makes is 20 minutes longer than it needs to be, and I don't know if I've met anyone who'll go tooth and nail to contradict that statement.

I love his stuff, but he doesn't have nearly the cult of personality that Tarentino does. Box office wise his movies do good but not great. Critically his movies do good but not great (Pan's Labyrinth being the exception). As far as I've ever seen his reputation is "good, but not great." I think mostly people are just glad that he exists, because so few movies like Hellboy and Pacific Rim get made as it is without someone like Del Toro pushing for them.

As far as Pacific Rim is concerned, I loved it. It was buckets of fun. The action's good, the visuals are great, the actors are good (the main character is some forgettable Chris Pine clone, but the rest of the cast makes up for him, Idris Elba in particular), and the overall world-story is pretty interesting.

The movie sets up the basic conflict with the kaiju in the first few minutes, then jumps forward 12 years or so, to the point that fighting the kaiju is old news to get the plot rolling. It's a neat choice, and leaves a nice big gap in the story that I hope they explore further with either a project like The Animatrix, or a couple volumes of comic books (beyond "Tales From Year Zero").

I can't stress it enough: it's a lot of fun. It's also a damn shame that America decided that Grown Ups 2 was more interesting than watching Stringer Bell punch Godzilla in the balls.

Well, technically Stringer Bell is a character from HBO's "The Wire", a dark, gritty, and serious telenovel exploring the War on Drugs with a multifacited approach, following the perspective of both the police, politics, and drug dealers. While the character of Stringer Bell was played by actor Idris Elba, he isn't present in Pacific Rim despite Idris Elba playing a character within the film. Likewise Godzilla is a character from the long running series of films bearing his name, and is credited with being the first modern incarnation of kaiju in popular culture, but does not personally appear in Pacific Rim beyond the similarities of form and theme in the film. While the film, Pacific Rim, does contain fighting, it doesn't resort to crass "kick in the balls" humour.

The humour of "watch Stringer Bell punch Godzilla in the balls" is derived from the double violation of expectatons, by implying the presence of both the chracters Stringer Bell and Godzilla where there is only similarity, as well as the apparent double-standard of heriarchizing Pacific Rim above Grown Ups 2 while implying a type of action in the former that would be perfectly at home in the latter. Additionally this humour plays off a cultural predilecton among select internet peer groups for fan-generated mashups of licensed characters, sometimes referred to as "fan art" or "fan fiction", wherein the stereotypical product is of poor quality, often pandering to base desires for visceral scenaros, i.e. violence and/or sex between the characters.

Agree with your review, except that I had no problem with the Chris Pine clone.  I had more of an issue with the Robert Kazinsky/Chuck Hansen character, who was far more the cardboard cut-out.  But pointing that out in a Giant Robots vs Monsters movie is a bit silly :D  There was more than enough characterisation imo

Not really.  It's more familiarity - as in I know those characters because I've seen one or two (literally) comics with them in them.  Never did get into comics but had friends that did.  I do know, though, that Spiderman is awful so something better should be offered.  Calling upon what I can - a very limited knowledgebase - I came up with those names.

Well, thats a strange thing to "know".  Spiderman is one of the better characters out there. Unique and unusual powers. Was one of the "new wave" back in 62, of characters with mundane problems like making the rent.  Sure, in 50+ years there have been some crap stories (Clones, OMD, anything with Venom) but there have also been some great ones (Death of Gwen Stacy, Spiderman No More, Harry Osborn Saga).

Except dinosaurs are cool. So is Alejandro Jodorowski, Jim Jarmusch, Michel Gondry, Sofia Coppola, Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, &c. &c. &c. Robots, aliens, car chases, sick stunts, and badass one liners are no less worthy of our attention than long meditations on the frailty of existence.

No need to get all snippy, sistah.  An explanation of my philosophy is not an indictment of yours.  ;)

Anyhoo, it's pretty simple: I play D&D with the same cats I've been playing D&D with for over 20 years.  It's not the game, it's the company.  We've played everything from D&D (2e, 3e, 3.5) to not-D&D (4e) to Pathfinder to Shadowrun to Battletech to Talisman ... you get the picture.  And here?  Nothing could be easier to explain in this context: I talk to people about things I'm currently interested in.  I also never said the people here impress me.  ;)

Just saw it too. I wanted to see what you guys thought of it, but it seems you're more interested in gay spider-men.
Anyway, instead of a sequel I would like to see a prequel of some sort, something about the solo-Jaegers from the early war or how the whole thing affected the world at large (reasons for rationing food, the kaiju black market, Jaeger maintenance, etc).

Maybe in comic books, but not in films. It was a financial failure.

Meh... It still has the pay-per-views and DVD sales to make up some of that lost money. How much did it cost to make?

Cost 190 millions to make. It has made 188 millions now. A film is considered a financial success when it makes double its production budget (to cover promotion, distribution, and other cost) at the box office.

110 millions came from foreign markets, which means it "only" made 78 millions in the US market. Also not a good sign for a sequel.

Different kind of movie. Pacific Rim is a decently fun movie. If you want to see giant robots fight giant monsters, and you don't mind the cheap forced drama, it's a fun movie.
The Wolverine is a fun movie if you hate yourself and want to throw some money away. The To Do List is a comedy. It has that girl that played the big sister in Scott Pilgrim VS The World.

You remember that scene in the last Batman movie where Bruce gets his spine fixed by the old guy in the prison with a rope and questionable chiropractic techniques? The stuff they pull in The Wolverine makes that scene in Batman seem totally legit.

I never saw the last Bat-Man movie, but I had this guy at work tell me about it, hes one of those guys that when he tells you about a movie he goes into great detail, scene by scene, so I do know the part youre takking about.

But looks like, thats the movie we're going to see, the wife decided that shes taking a nap and we're going to the Skyporn drive-in, which will be showing Turbo followed by the Wolverine, so I will witness firsthand just how bad it is. The Drive-In is actually called the Skyborn, but they used to show pornos there so everyone called it the Skyporn, and the name stuck, even though they dont show pornos anymore, I mean seriously drive-in pornos! Why doesnt anyone do that anymore!?
