... you know, in my high school you took AP courses to get a headstart on college, not because it would boost your GPA. Doubly so because they didn't actually count extra.
Yupyup. And they were more difficult so you could actually wind up with a lower GPA since it was possible you'd do a li'l worse in the tougher class. I admit that didn't happen often since most kids in AP classes were there because they were more than smart enough for the material, but yeah, the only advantage was college prep.
My wife actually had AP HS classes that gave her college credit. My school had no such program despite being rated several categories higher than hers. Strange. My stepson recently took JH AP classes that counted for HS credit. Yeah, odd.
I've sometimes wished that my parents had been more focussed on my competences when I was a child, instead of always going "You'll be what you'll be, and whatever that is, it's alright". But after reading that article, I now realise it could have been much, much worse...My parents were always on me about my grades - if I got a 95 on a test in an AP class they'd want to know where the other five points were...
And look where it got them - now I work an average blue-collar job and hang out on D&D forums posting snark and funny pictures, lol.

Yeah, my brother has ADD or whatever and he's really smart but did poorly in school. If he got a C it was something my parents were happy about ... which drove me nuts cuz I'd take crap for an A-. Gee, wonder why I was totally burnt out by the time college came around.
