People asking if you want to be their friend

Am I the only person who this comes off to as being incredibly immature? People ask this sometimes, people who are well over the age of 18, and it just comes off to me as a lack of social skills. You're either their friend or you're not, but just asking someone to be your friend doesn't seem like it'd be likely to be a successful strategy for friendship - being friends isn't about what you call each other, its about how you act towards one another.

I don't think it's immature. Sometimes people are just socially awkward and they have a hard time expressing things without being blunt.

A person can't be my friend unless every single subject imaginable is free game for a joke. There also has to be trust too. With out these to there is not much of a way that I can respect someone enough to call them a true friend.

There are only two people in the world I could label "True Friend". I would trust either of them with my life, and I would gladly die for them. That is how I measure "True Friendship". I have known them for years. There are no opening for this position. No one else can become one of my "True Friends". This is a relationship that transcends trust, interests, and actions. The three of us have undying support for one another.

I have many normal friends, with whom I have a great deal of fun, enjoy being around, and some I would trust with my wallet. I have been backstabbed by too many of my friends to place too much trust in any of them, but I try not to be overly cynical.

I have a few friendly acquaintances, with whom I am cordial and pleasant, enjoy spending small amounts of time with, but wouldn't actively seek to hang out with them. My biological father is one of these.

My family is a different category altogether.

There are 10 types of people in this world:

Friends who understand binary and everyone else.

Agreed. Granted, I'm not the most socially gifted person in the world, but I try to take people like this under my wing and help them out. Encourage them, invite them to meet my other friends, that sort of thing.

I wouldn't die for a friend but I'd certainly live for them. To me dieing just seems like the easy way out.

If you die for someone, you are no longer around to help them.

Echoing dirtyfrank's 'have to understand my sense of humor' sentiment. I'm a firm believer in the truism that you don't deserve anything you can't have a sense of humor about. If you can't take a throwing-a-child-into-a-woodchipper joke, we're not going to want to hang out. : P

RE: 'do you want to be my friend'. Do people actually say this after age 10?

Asking someone to be your friend is like asking someone you've just met for them to tell if think you're good in bed, you don't know.
If someone contacts me suddenly and asks if I will be their friend, I feel like "I don't even know if I like you, shouldn't we atleast establish some common ground?"

Ofcourse when meeting new people it can be odd since one of the first questions is usually "so what kind of music do you like?" What sort of stupid question is that?! Maybe if you asked me what my favourite type of music is I could answer it more succinctly and give you the sort of answer you're actually looking for. Don't get me started on the people who answer "Oh I like all music." Oh yeah? when was the last time you listened to anything classical, maybe some country? hmm.

Sorry, my rant restraint snapped

Once I was a new kid at school.

I asked a guy for some of his cookie saying "I'll be your best friend."

He's my BFF.

I disagree. 10 types of people just doesn't have enough precision. There are FF people in the world. And no I am not going to list them all out.

Yes I know, and that is far too binary. There are more types of people in the world. In fact I byte my tongu to take back my previous statement that there are only FF types of people in the world. There are enough types of people in the world as to fill up an entire word! That's right there is an entire word of types of people in the world......I have a feeling that I am being a bit less clever then I want to think that I am, but I know I'm being many bits more accurate then you were. Oh dear lord I forgot how bad computer science jokes were.:embarrass

We know you did.

And he's speaking in hexadecimal. I don't get it, but it might have been 30. Or 225. or 256.

But what if you only define the groups by a single trait? People must either have it or not have it (not both and not neither). That's two types right there.

Not if we add quantum computing to the mix. Then we have an infinite amount of possibilities!:D

And how does FF relate to binary?

It is the highest possible binary number that can expressed with a byte of data being expressed as a hexadecimal number. So 11111111=255=FF.

That doesn't make it binary, that makes it hexadecimal.

I never said it was binary. I said that FF(hex) values allow for greater precision then 10(binary) values do.
