Phantom Menace review by Red Letter Media

Jan 17, 2011 2:53:21 Caught Red Letter Media's Review of The Phantom Menace and it scratches the surface regarding a number of issues.

One: Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jin go down to the surface of Naboo on seperate Invasion craft and wind up in the same area. Sure it could have been a common deploy area, but what if Obi wan Kenobi is on the wrong side of the world all alone...and encounters a JarJar with a Different Problem.

"Moymoy! We swim now." The Gungan prepared to enter the water.
"Something's Wrong. I sense something..." Obi-wan pulled back from the black pool.
"Nono Its just the Force. Much Force in Gungan City..."
Obiwan entered the Water after the Gungan. Still he could not shake the feeling. It was something he should know. Should Recognize...it only grew stronger as he approached the incredible subaquatic city.

The City was eerie. Obiwan followed the Gungan through the uncrowded halls past few Gungans who seem surprised by the Jedi's Presence.

The Throneroom was crowded with Gungans.

"Jarjar! What have you done?" The bulbous lord of all gungans sat fat and necrotic on his throne reminiscent of the Hutt. This was all wrong. Obiwan could feel the power of the force but there was definatly something wrong with the sensation.
"Why you Jedi here?" From Boznas's shadow a cloaked warrior emerged and Ignited a Lightsaber of red fire.

However, then I looked at the faces of all the 8, 9, 10 year olds leaving the theater. It was easy to tell from their excitement that a whole new generation of Star Wars fans were born. At that moment, I realized that Lucas was a pretty smart cookie.

That's when I realized kids are dumb and George Lucas sucked.

Indeed.

But man was it funny. My GF is still laughing.

I remember being young when Phantom menace came out. I remember how hyped up some of my peers were.... until they watched the trilogy.... Phantom was never spoke of again even at a young age.

Jan 20, 2011 10:03:04 Phantom only bothered me in hindsight, when I actually stopped and thought about Jar-Jar and the pod race scene. The introduction of Darth Maul and the lightsaber battle was pretty cool; then again, I was ten when this came out.

Jan 20, 2011 11:19:08 I think the young anakin seemed to jolt the film off kilter, though it may have been on purpose to represent the jolt he gave the Jedi order throughout the story. Jar Jar as a character isn't a bad idea in itself, it was the implematation of it. The comedian that played him was given way to much freedom with ad lib dialogue. I think the captain gungan that confronted them as they came into the underwater city would have been a better way to portray the character. As it is, all gungans look silly simply because of the bumbling joke of a performance by a hack comedian.

The things that the three preqels did get right was the portral of Obi Wan and the great light sabor battles. Anakin, though, takes up a lot of screen time that simply drags, specially in the second movie.
