The game, cards, anime, nostalgia of your childhood, anything about it. I beat Platinum and plan on using Garchomp, Tyranitar, Rhyperior, Lucario, Porygon-Z, and Vaporeon. Haven't fully dedicated to any movesets yet.

As an Obsessive Compulsive, my life would utterly disappear should I ever get my hands on Diamond or Pearl, as the sheer number of Pokemon available for teams would take hundreds of hours out of my life. Whilst all of my cheap-ass friends used the Rare Candy trick on Red and Blue, I manually raised my "perfect team" to max level (which actually gives better stats, anyway), and proceeded to wipe the floor with them, and then dominate anything and everything in Pokemon Stadium a few years later.

Suffice to say, I'll probably never get a DS, even if they ARE recently making the PSP look like a NeoGeo Arcade Machine.

My personal wish is for a Pokémon RPG for the Wii that takes advantage of an internet connection somehow. Not a full MMORPG, though.

A pokemon Red and Blue MMO would slaughter Wow like a White Goat. Perhaps that's why Nintendo has not done it yet. They feel sorry for Blizzard.

I used a combo of Rare Candy and actually leveling.

Of course then I one upped that, by having monsters above the max level. I stopped at Pokemon Gold. (the one where you had Pikachu in the start)

I still purchase and play the video games.

I sank about 200 hours into Diamond, and was building an IV/EV trained competitive team. I finished my Charizard and I think was working on Garchomp.

I then proceeded to lose my game cartridge, which had all of my awesome pokemon in it.

All of them.

Still somewhat into Pokemon as I like the concept (it appears I have an internet page open on some sort of Pokemon manga as well, now that I look closely at the mention of Pokemon), but a friend of mine took it a step further: he's now playing a class that is a DnD version of the Pokemon trainer.

I bet you'd start from Kanto (the Generation 1 region) and the other ones would be available as add-ons. I think it would be best if it was distributed like Guild Wars (i.e. each part being playable on it's own and featuring a different region, all of them compatible with each other).

currently playing pearl, anxious for platinum.

my current "team" (for lack of a better word) is:

100 alakazam (my fav old-school one... glass cannon... AWAY!)
100 garchomp
82 metagross
47 gallade (Mean Look + hypnosis + false swipe... gotta catch em all :D)
somewhere-in-his-teens Bibarrel (I named him Useless, but he can learn SO MANY TMS... O_O)
8 starly (fly + defog)

i haven't really messed much with the breeding of IV's... WAY too much work for me. EV's are easy enough to keep track of.

not too sure which i'm going to level after metagross. i don't have full access to all of the 'mons yet though.

------------------

i always liked pokemon. it's a pretty dark world in actuality:

there is nothing like having an entire global society not just condoning the confining of animals to small areas, forcing them into ****-fights and betting on them, while selectively breeding & enhancing growth through steroid use, as well as allowing flash mutations to occur with no real respect to the animal's well being... but allowing this "sport" to thrive and become the most popular sporting event in it's known history, as well as having down to a science.

it's beautiful.

I like the concept of the Pokemon games, but I'd prefer if the story were a little deeper. I never went nuts about EVs or DVs or IVs or whatever, just raised the teams that I wanted to play. I just fired up my old copy of Silver after looking at this thread and my team consists of:

Dragonite
Tentacruel
Sunflora
Girafirig
Magneton
Houndoom

As you can see, I'm kind of fond of odd type combinations (and Dragonite!). In Sapphire, which a friend lent me indefinitely, I have:

Magneton (It's a personal favorite, okay?)
Swampert
Sableye (omgnoweaknessessocool)
Beautifly (I... can't really explain this one)
Machoke (because I have no one to trade with)
Cradily (rock/grass? Sure.)

Never got into the newer games, or any of the console games beyond Stadium.

Thinking back to it, I still have to facepalm when I remember that in Yellow, the first of the games I played, I never got past Viridian Forest, simply because I didn't see a door at the end.

It was hard raising some Pokemons into the mid-twenties with just that low-level area to work with.

I tested that and found it's a myth. First I used the cloning trick in Pokémon Crystal and then traded them to my Pokémon Red and proceeded to level one manually and the other with rare candies. While the stats did not turn out identical as the two Pokémon (Pidgeys) leveled up, neither ever became clearly superior to the other. The trick is a bit harder to test in later games, so I can't comment on that.

Oh man, I feel for you. The first time I played through Red, my team was a travesty. I had something like a level 63 charizard against the elite four, and my next highest was a high 30's Hitmonchan. I evolved a Jigglypuff into Wigglytuff at level 3 (which stops it from ever learning new moves), so it had Pound and Water Gun from a TM. I'm pretty sure I was still using it at the end of the game.

Kept failing on the elite four, so I finally realized I might have to actually strategize a bit. Restarted, levelled my team evenly, and absolutely ruined the elite four.

While Pokemon might not have started my RPG obsession (that prize goes to Mario RPG), it certainly fueled the fire.

They specifically put Mankey in the starting zones in Yellow because Brock used Rock types. Thinking back, it was a huge oversight on their part that you could fight a gym leader without access to anything that could even do normal damage to them, let alone be "super effective" or whatever.

Well, I guess there was the possibility of Butterfree (and Confusion), but it was incredibly rare in Red, almost moreso than Pikachu. Really, Charmander starters in Red were just screwed for the first and most likely second gym.

There was a Java-ap I was using for a while called Shoddy Battle to play on-line using trained and tweaked pokemon for free. I found that all of my logically constructed sensible battle teams got curb-stomped without mercy, yet the team made up of annoying underused underpowered pokemon won more than anything.

"Breloom, use Focus Punch! WHERE'S YOUR GOD NOW?!"

"Licky-Licky, use EXPLOSION!"

"Guess what Vespiqueen does this turn? That's right! It uses Defense Order!"

Oh, good times.

I am a big fan of the Pokemon games, yet I have never been able to get more than halfway through any one of them. Most of the time, I get just far enough that my latent obsessive/compulsive tendencies begin to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of Pokemon I am missing, so I start trying really hard to catch pokemon. Then I get burned out when I realize that I haven't made any story progress for six weeks. It gets me every time, yet I still go on to buy the next generation of Pokemon games.

My current lvl 100's include an Espeon, Nidoking, Jumpluff, Raichu (my favorite pokemon), and my Charizard, all ported to Pearl from FireRed. My current team (who are nearing lvl 70) includes my Infernape, Slowking, Mismagius, Crobat, Glaceon, and Trapinch whom I'm waiting until lvl 89 to evolve to it can learn Fissure. And between my FireRed and Pearl versions, I have at least a box full of battle-ready pokemon between lvl 50 and 55. I've just been too lazy to port them all. It's just sad I can't port over my pokemon from earlier editions. I had a lvl 100 umbreon that could solo Lance's steelix in Pokemon Stadium 2, using only Faint Attack and Moonlight, and was able to thrash most other pokemon as well. Ah...good times.

Pokemon also strongly inspired two of my homebrewed races (which I'm still in the fleshing out and updating for 4e). The charadra and the risian were orginally fan-pokemon characters that I almost made into a comic (yes, I'm that geeky). The charadra still resemble raichu in appearance, but the risian are a bit more removed from their original source.

Well, I guess there was the possibility of Butterfree (and Confusion), but it was incredibly rare in Red, almost moreso than Pikachu. Really, Charmander starters in Red were just screwed for the first and most likely second gym.

Charmander was actually not as gimped against Brock as most people thought. Back in the RBY days, Brock's pokemon were not equiped with rock type moves to nail Charmander's weakness, and Charmander could to low, but no insignificant damage, with Ember due to geodude's and onix's low Sp.Def. Switching Charmander in after a pokemon with Growl lowed their attack was a pretty effective strategy. Difficult, but you could get by in a pinch. And there would be plenty of pokemon along the way to the second gym to pick up the slack against Misty.

Shinanigans! Caterpie lacks both egg moves and TM, and even its evolved forms can't learn those moves. Surely you meant some other bug-like pokemon.

Yeah, I won that fight by ember spamming, and switching to growl when Onyx used Bide. It was tough, but doable. Still, the first boss shouldn't be such a headache because you happened to pick a fire type as your starter.

As for Misty... The only pokemon you could pick up on the way that could beat her were Oddish and Pikachu, if I recall correctly. Sure, you had a chance to pick up a few that weren't necessarily weak to her, but your options for pokemon that were strong against her were sharply limited.

They did a much better job in gold/silver, where you could get an Onyx for the first gym, and several flyers for the second. Also, it was possible to get Gastly nearly right off the bat, which was pretty darn cool. Of course, one of the starters was still screwed against the first two gyms.

True, but you really didn't need a pokemon that were strong against her either. Except her Starmie. Honestly, I found battling Misty and her Starmie far more annoying than Brock, even with pokemon with a type advantage.

I agree. G/S did a great job at toning down the Nintendo difficulty. The latter remakes of R/B were better in this regard as well. Most notably, for me at least, was the sharp reduction of rock type pokemon in caves, which had an annoying habit of shrugging off most of your party's moves for a large majority of the game.

That Starmie was a beast. Brock's pokemon didn't have particularly high attack scores, which made the fight against them tolerable, at least. That Starmie could shred you, though.

I think Red/Blue were only Nintendo Hard for the first three gyms (although you could pretty much waltz through the third one with a Diglett), and Sabrina's gym. Outside of Jolteon, there was really nothing that had a bug or ghost attack that wasn't weak to her psychics anyway, on account of being half poison (I'm looking at you, Beedrill and Gengar!).

As for rock types in the caves, yeah, those were extremely annoying. Equally frustrating were the bloody Zubat swarms, though! Heck, Zubat is even the poster child for the ******* Bats page on TV Tropes.

You can find them in Mt Moon, but they're pretty rare though. I think you have to be in the lower levels of Mt Moon to find them. As for Bellsprout, I didn't realize you was talking specifically about the red version, so sorry about that. I always think in terms of generation when I talk about pokemon: RBY, GSC, RSRLE, DPPt

I think Red/Blue were only Nintendo Hard for the first three gyms (although you could pretty much waltz through the third one with a Diglett), and Sabrina's gym. I didn't have too much problems with any of the gyms past Misty's. Sabrina was never really all that tough as long as you had at least one bulky pokemon with a decent physical attack, as the Abra family were even more of a glass cannon back then. My favorite anti-kazam weapon back in the day was a Hypno with Hypnosis and Mega Punch. Simple, but it got the job done.

And Pin Missile with Jolteon has always been a trap; a flavor move and nothing more due to Jolteon's poor Atk. Which is sad really, because it would be an awesome for it to use regularly. It might have even been a decent novelty move in the current edition if they had made it a special attack, which I think fits better with the nature of the attack anyway. But I'm digressing now.

As for rock types in the caves, yeah, those were extremely annoying. Equally frustrating were the bloody Zubat swarms, though! Heck, Zubat is even the poster child for the ******* Bats page on TV Tropes.

Honestly, I never had too many problems with zubats. I could deal with Super Sonic and Confuse Ray easily enough, and most pokemon can damage them regularly; and I was pleasantly surprised with how tough, useful, and cute they could be the first time I trained one in G/S. It was always more annoying to me how hard it was to level pokemon that couldn't damage rock-types easily, like Raichu for example. Doubly so when going through Victory Road.

I picked Charmander on my very first go-through of Pokemon Red. I found that it worked rather well against Brock, since Brock's Pokemon are still susceptable to being burned. If Brock's Onyx gets burned, beating it is almost an inevitability, since its attack power drops quite a bit.

The one thing I can't figure out is why Nintendo Power originally suggested that a Charmander-users's best bet of beating Brock was a Pikachu. I am not kidding. It has to be the worst Pokemon-related advice I have ever seen.

As for Jolteon, while it doesn't have much in the way of an attack score, the Kazam family has even less defense, so Pin Missile will still rip them apart. Failing that, it is possible to muscle through the majority of that game, including Sabrina.

With Zubat/Golbat, it was never a huge problem beating them, but it often turned into an exercise in annoyance. "Oh great, Dragonair is confused again. Switch out, and... get hit with another Confuse Ray. *Sigh*. Switch back..." Which sucked, because golbat was a great source of EXP in GSC, especially on the ice path. Victory Road was a great place to grind, but the pokemon came in two varieties (in silver, anyway): Rock/Ground, and Flying/Poison. Chances are, the pokemon that was good against one sucked against the other. Oh, and the Gravelers enjoyed Self Destruct, though it was always good for a laugh when they did that to a ghost or something.

I wasn't even talking about Crobat. Considering how often I 1-hit the guys, Zubat can was actually alot more effective in battle than I thought it would be. Not only was it nice to be on the sending end of the iconic bat, Lil' Zuzu could actually deal some decent damage as well once replaced that dinky Leech Life with a decent move like Bite. It's Crobat evolution was just icing; sweet, delicious, vanilla icing.

As an aside, the 'bat family can now get Hypnosis as an egg move, so the cake now has sprinkles as well ;)

You do have a point, but that's too much of a nich use for me.

I am quite aware of the confusion annoyance. I could normally beat them before they could confuse my pokemon, or just ignore the confusion status and end the battle quickly anyway. In the RBY days, wild 'bats didn't have much in the way of really good offensive moves, so you don't really lose much for losing a turn and taking some minor damage when confusion works. I guess I'm also pretty patient as far as these things go, since I rarely let such annoyances get to me.

Also, I normally had my pokemon equipped with a wide range of moves, so it was rare for any of my pokemon to only be able one take down one and not the other (Electric and Grass types being the obvious exceptions, and in later games not even then). The rock types simply were tougher, more durable, had stronger attacks, and were resist to the (then) swiss army knives that were Normal moves, which made them more dangerous prey. Also, they liked to explode to make you waste a pots and revives, which made fighting them more expensive too.

Well, my last team in silver on victory road was:

Sunflora (Beats ground, not golbat)
Dragonair (not strong against either)
Magneton (can't hurt ground, beats golbat)
Girafirig (beats everything, since ground types have such low special defense)
Pidgeot (okay against golbat, loses to graveller, loses to donphan if it uses rollout)
Tentacruel (okay against golbat, beats everything else)

Trying to grind the Sunflora and Pidgeot was the worst. I've since decided that pure grass types really aren't worth the trouble, and there's a reason that pidgey is so easy to catch (hint: it sucks). I replaced the pidgeot with a Houndoom, which made the team oh so much better.

Never liked Gyrados, personally. It's got a nice meaty attack score, but it never gets any flying attacks, making its second type a complete liability (doubles its electricity weakness, gives it a weakness to rock, a type it would otherwise beat without question, gives it immunity to ground, which it would beat as a water type anyway, strips away its ice resistance... ugh)

Now, tentacruel is a poison type, which gives it weaknesses to psychic and ground (but water is super effective against ground anyway, and tentacruel is pretty much always going to be faster than a ground type, so call this one a wash), but takes away its weakness to grass. Also, it has insane special defense and very good speed. Its attack is high enough to use powerful poison attacks like Sludge Bomb (in gold and silver this was a TM), so teach it that and surf and you're in business.

Checking my old copy of Silver, my Tentacruel is set up with Surf, Sludge Bomb, Barrier, and Screech.

And just look at Tentacruel. The thing is freakin' sweet. Never thought a jellyfish could be so badass. Gyrados also gets style points for looking scary enough to make small children cry, but I'll pick Tentacruel over it every time, if only so I don't have to slog through 5-15 levels of Magicarp.

Pidgeot's actually not that bad pokemon. While it's not spectacular in any area, it has well-rounded stats and a decent selection of moves. It far from sucks (you must be thinking of Farfetch'd...poor Farfetch'd). Steel Wing would have helped it greatly against Gravelers, and Fly would have greatly reduce the effectiveness of Rollout since its attack power resets to 30 on a miss. Even with Stab, your Pidgeot would probably too much to worry about from that attack so long as you kept a few Lemonades handy. Recent versions have given Pidgeot some useful tricks, so its more attractive then what it was in GSC. I don't disagree with your decision to bench Pidgeot though. Your team needed the type diversity that Houndoom brought in.

If it didn't have the move already, a simple Headbutt TM or an Ice/Electric/Rock-type Hidden Power would have gave Sunflora at least a fighting chance against Golbats, since its default movesets are devoid of any non-Grass attacks. But those flying type attacks would still be a pain.

Dragonair has several moves available to it that would have helped it chew up rock and flying types with ease, such as Iron Tail, Icy Wind, and Ice Beam, so they're no reason why it should be having a hard time against those types unless your strategy for its moveset simply didn't have room for alterations.

While it's Sp.Atk is hard to beat, Magneton's always been more of a one-trick pony pokemon and suffered from the same shallow moveset problem as Sunflora, so that's no surprise. It's one of the reason's why I normally electric types with lower electrical power but broader move sets. But even then, it's unlikely for an electric type to solo Graveler unless it's armed with a water/grass/ice HP with a decent attack power, or has access to water attacks, like Chinchou and Raichu.

Admittedly, at that point in the game I was leery about using TMs on any of my pokemon, because I didn't have my final move/team setup completely thought out.

My Pidgeot seemed to have rather mediocre stats, though this wasn't helped by its best move outside of Fly being Wing Attack. I don't think normal/flying has a place on a well rounded team, truthfully. I would have used Skarmory if I weren't using Magneton and Sunflora already (having three pokemon weak to fire would not be the smartest move ever).

Sunflora does suffer from a rather single-track moveset, so it was often a one trick pony (and that trick was usually 'kill things tentacruel could probably kill anyway'). Using it at all was something of an experiment. I wish I had used Meganium or something instead.

As for Magneton... I just like it. I understand it isn't necessarily the best electric type, but I like how it looks and its large number of resistances. It can learn Rollout, but it doesn't have the attack to make use of it, and it doesn't really cover its weaknesses anyway.

Gyarados doesn't really need flying-type attacks as it has equally good alternatives. Gyarados has a nice, diverse moveset that many water types can't match, including electric (which makes it a good choice against other water types), ice, and dragon attacks in GSC, and fire, and even Earthquake in later editions to handle slower moving electric types. And it's immunity to ground attacks works against more pokemon than ground types, as Earthquake is a popular move in competitive battling.

Even more so in later editions with the addition of 2-on-2 battles, where Earthquake nails all pokemon on the screen besides the user, including your partner pokemon. Gryrados makes a great partner to a Earthquake user; especially Rhydon since it can draw and absorb all eclectic attacks, making its x4 electric weakness a non-issue. But I'm digressing again.

Ah. I've been there lots of times. I'm still there. There is where I live, it seems.

I don't think normal/flying has a place on a well rounded team, truthfully.

It can, and I've done it before. The trick is the same with any pokemon; finding a nich on your team that it can fill. It's moveset, however, doesn't lend itself easily to that in earlier editions. Hyperbeam was one of my favorite attacks to give Pidgeot when I couldn't think of anything better. Decent Stats + High Speed + Stab + Weakened Pokemon + Spanish Inquisition == OMGWTFBBQBLARG!!1.

As for Magneton... I just like it. I understand it isn't necessarily the best electric type, but I like how it looks and its large number of resistances.

I understand how you feel. My favorite pokemon is Raichu, but there's one electric pokemon in particular that just outclasses it in well-roundedness (grrrr...Dinklebuzz...)

Oh, and I restarted Sapphire just for kicks, mostly because of this thread. I have to say: HOLY CRAP THE FIRST GYM. It's like Brock on acid. Ok I'll explain how I got these.
Lvl 100 Alakazam
- Glass canon opener.

Nothing special sadly...

Lvl 100 Slow Bro
- My favorite piggy...bear...thing...

Still nothing special

Lvl 100 Swinub
- Piggy! :D Also, I breeded it so it knew Earthquake and Surf or w/e its called.

Hot swinub/nidoqueen (or king...I forget which...I know there was an order for the gender...) action.

Lvl 100 Boar-thing that evolves from swinub
- Moar piggy! It knew Horndrill from carefull breeding.

Hot piggy/rhino action.

Lvl 100 Miltank
- Cao!

Nothing special...

Lvl 100 Caterpie
- 2 years of work. It knew Flamethrower, Thunder, Horndrill and Earthquake. Then I got maxxed stats. Gotta love breeding.

Ok here's hot I did it:

1. Traded a copy of my Lugia for a Charzard.

2. Breed Charzard with a copy to create a Charmander with Flamethrower.

3. Grabbed my Bufferfle (or w/e it's called) from the bank.

4. Hot Charzard/Butterfle action...and lots of it...

5. Moar hot lizard/butterfly action...

6. Wait for it...

7. Ok I got a Catterpie that new Flamethrower (thank God it was the correct gender I needed).

8. Evolved it to Butterfle.

9. Grabbed my Pikachu.

10. Hot Pikachu/Buffterfle action...

11. This takes several tries...

12. Damn that 5% chance for a baby pokemon to know a random move from it's mom (or dad?)...

13. Ok got a Catterpie with Flamethrower and Thunder...

14. Realize it's the wrong gender..

15. Repeat steps 10-14 as needed.

16. Realise I've spend several weeks on this...

17. Grab my Nidoqueen (or King...).

18. Do the usual lengthy proccess for breeding Pokemon to learn moves they normally don't know...

19. Grind Elite Four for monies...

20. Buy stat boosters 'till they don't work no mo'.

Swinub cannot learn Surf. Perhaps you are thinking of Blizzard?

Lvl 100 Boar-thing that evolves from swinub
- Moar piggy! It knew Horndrill from carefull breeding.

Horndrill is not a swinub egg move or level-up move, and was only a TM in RBY, before breeding was introduced. Perhaps you are thinking of Horn Attack?

4. Hot Charzard/Butterfle action...and lots of it...

Charizard and Butterfree simply cannot breed together. Charizard belongs to the monster and egg groups. Butterfree belongs the Bug egg group. They will never breed together.

9. Grabbed my Pikachu.

10. Hot Pikachu/Buffterfle action...

Same problem here. Neither shares a common egg group.

12. Damn that 5% chance for a baby pokemon to know a random move from it's mom (or dad?)...

Breeding does not work like that. If the father knows an egg move or TM move that the baby could learn, the baby is born knowing those moves. Also, if both the father and mother know a learn up move the the baby could learn as a level up move, the baby is born knowing those moves. There's no %-chance involved. The baby automatically learns all that applies, and the new moves "push out" the baby's default moves if it would otherwise know more than 4.

17. Grab my Nidoqueen (or King...).

18. Do the usual lengthy proccess for breeding Pokemon to learn moves they normally don't know...

Egg group issues again.

And in any of the cases, it would be impossible for Caterpie to learn those moves even if you bred your butterfree with a compatible pokemon with moves in question.

Me thinks either your game cartridge, your pokemon, or the pokemon you were traded were glitched or haxxed.

Every once in a while I tune in to the Pokemon TV series, usually when they change which game they are basing it off of. I follow it for a while, then eventually stop following it. Truth be told, I don't think the quality of the series has actually changed that much. It is still about as good/bad as it always had been.

However, my ability to enjoy the Pokemon anime really dropped off when I read what the main Pokemon manga was like. In comparison, the anime really seems like a lost opportunity. On the other hand, I have always liked the Pokemon movies. While some are better than others, the emphasis of the movies on creating really fantasic and amazing locations is something I never get tired of. Unfortunatly, I missed every showing of the Giratina movie so-far. I need to be more attentive.

Heh, I some how wound up with a pigeot fairly early on IIRC. It was the one that was above Charmander that dropped him though. By the time I got to Misty it didn't matter what I had, cause I had quite a few different pokemon and I think I had managed to get some poison pokemon by then. Killed her's with DOTS *L* and by that point, probably Charizard... I should play Red again.. it was so fun.

You get pidgeot at level 32, IIRC, and Charizard at 36. Are you sure you don't mean Pidgeotto (18?) and Charmeleon (16?). If you were that massively overlevelled, of course you smoked the first two gyms. You had 20 levels on Brock and 16 on Misty!

As for poison types... Beedrill and Ekans were pretty easily available at that point. Butterfree got Poison Powder, and I think so did Oddish. I recall poison kind of sucking in red, though. Except for Toxic, it seemed to do very minimal damage, though that could be me remembering poorly.

If it helps, dogs and cats shared a common ancestor as recently as about 20 million years ago. And I'm pretty sure all of the feline and canine pokemon belong to a common egg group. So, um...yeah...again.

Ever wonder why they did not just make the newer games massive and let people go to all of the regions from the old games?

Yes I have. I would have loved to be able to go back to Johto; Or even better, the option to choose what region to start in.

Though, if they did it like they did in G/S/C, I think all the regions to date might be a bit much for a single game playthough. I did find it kinda of weird that, after battling the best trainers in the region to just to get to the Elite Four, beating them, and becoming Teh Pokeman Masta, I go on vacation in Kanto to find everyone, from little ol' ladies to kindergartners, has pokemon at the same level as mine or higher (read: lvl 50+ and capable of taking on legendaries with ease). What...?

Now add three more regions.

That's not to say that I wouldn't mind having enough story-mode to entertain me until my pokemon reach lvl 100.

Mm, that's not entirely true. There was a huge drop in the power level of your opponents after the elite four. Most of them were in the 30-40 level range. I don't think any of the Kanto gym leaders could hold a candle to Lance, and their pokemon also topped out at about level 50 (usually lower). Really the only one stronger than the elite four was Red, and maybe Blue, but there's good reason for that (both have been the league champion previously).

The difficulty in G/S/C was kind of all over the place. The first gym could be difficult and often descended into a Luck Based Mission because of that freakin' pidgeotto's Mud Slap, then the second gym was easier, unless the Scyther really got going with Fury Cutter, but it should've been dead long before that really became an issue. The Miltank in gym 3 could be problematic if you didn't trade for a Machop, but even without you could probably just muscle through. From there on the difficulty was basically non-existant until you got to Lance, unless you had a strong, fast Ice type.

Then you got to Kanto, which was a cake walk except for Blue, and finally there was Red, who had about 20 levels on every other trainer in the entire game! I still beat him with a party of mostly level 55 pokemon. I blame the game's crappy AI (and the fact that Snorlax can't do anything against a Misdreavous suicide bombing).

I would enjoy a massive pokemon game. Maybe one where you couldn't get to the league until you had been through every region, and were reasonably close to the level 100 cap anyway. Like:

Kanto (1-50)
Johto (51-70)
Hoenn (71-85)
Sinnoh (86-95)
League (96-100)

It was especially annoying because of Pokemon Stadium. I wanted to use my teams, but they were always too high level for the 50 bracket and too low for the 100 bracket. There was nothing you could actually grind on to get to level 100, since the highest level enemies in red/blue were in what, the high 60s? Grinding became way too much of a chore.

You're probably right. It has been too long since I played G/S/C, and I'm probably misremembering it with Fr/Lg, where the Sevii Islands is pretty much that. Though really, my complaint about verisimilitude rather than difficulty.

From there on the difficulty was basically non-existant until you got to Lance, unless you had a strong, fast Ice type.

I never had any problem with Pidgeotto in the first gym. I don't remember it ever using the move often enough to cause me any major problems, and it's easy to counter if it does become a problem (just switch out your pkmn). Fury Cutter was a joke. But I basically agree with the rest. Fighting Miltank that early in the game was always a challenge, though, IMO, Claire was a pretty noticeable difficulty bump on the way to battle Lance.

I would enjoy a massive pokemon game. Maybe one where you couldn't get to the league until you had been through every region, and were reasonably close to the level 100 cap anyway. Like:

Kanto (1-50)
Johto (51-70)
Hoenn (71-85)
Sinnoh (86-95)
League (96-100)

I don't think I would be completely satisfied with this set up. From a mechanical standpoint, its fine. However, while League trainers are strong, they're pokemon are not that strong. A lv96+ league would put 15 trainers worth of pokemon about 30-50 levels above most legendaries. And legendaries are suppose to be pretty much the cream of the crop as far as power goes, with only a scant few ever being able meet them. Not two mention three regions full of god-level pokemon. That would just feel kinda of odd to me.

I'm not sure it'd even be possible to cram the first 8 badges into 25 levels. Level gain tends to be really rapid for the first... 30 or so levels.

One problem I could see with a massive game would be the region specific pokemon. Like how in G/S/C you couldn't get dark types until the middle of Kanto, and they topped out at about level 15. Your team would be in the 40s at least by that point, making the grind rather frustrating. The absolute worst offender would probably be the level 4 pikachu you can find after getting something like the 6th Kanto badge. If you wanted a Raichu on your final team, well, good luck with that.

While this too is great from a mechanical standpoint, it fails to address region balance: What about trainers who want to start in Johto? They can get a lvl 25 Croconaw off the bat, or do they just not get to start there? Wild
Piplups are legenary tier, or do they start off too low to actually exist there? They can do things similar to WoW, every region has a starting zone (they actually do too), and then build up difficulty by towns and gyms. Then the Pokemon League can be a culmination that all regions come together at. Like the handhelds, once you beat the League, you can go off and explore the other regions or go to the Battle Frontier and finish off the level grind.

Strange combo, but it worked.

I hated Generation 3: worst pokemon designs and subpar music. Pain.

Gen.4 (D/P) is now infamous for NO FIRE-TYPES. There are two in the whole mainland. (Five if you count evolution.) AAARGGH! Plus they reused the Fire/Fighting starter combo from 3rd Gen.

Thanks for the positive support guys I loved the idea of the Battle Frontier, even the Battle Tower from Crystal was cool, it just blew that they never gave experience or Pokedex entries for battles there. This could be a way that you would get to battle high level trainers and actually level from it. If they ever made an MMO for Pokemon (I hope they do) it would inevitably end up with powergamers the same way WoW does (look up competitive battling, cereal business) but thankfully, the very lore and set-up of the game basically says "Train your team to be Ubermon, think strategically, and execute decicivly (sp?)"
Hmmm... What would everybody want to see in a Pokemon MMORPG?

I like the concept of the Pokemon games, but I'd prefer if the story were a little deeper.

That's what I like about the Pokemon games. The premise is simple. "Become the best Pokemon Trainer in the region." In part, that's what hooked me on the game. I work in the news business and it's nice to come home from a world where things are chaos and shades of gray and then fire up the Pokemon where the goals are clear and the world is whimsical, cheery and fun.

My brother is gonna give me his Diamond version after he gets Platinum, so once I've beaten that game, I'll probably port my Doomizard, my Flygon, my Pigeot, and my Raichu (all except Flygon were in my original Elite Four crushing team) over to it so I can have an epic battle with him (I tend not to powergame in video games, but I'll probably fight others).

In the TCG I created a Fire/Electric deck (with a Charizard EX as the centerpiece and Pigeot as an energy factory) and I used it so often (over time I adapt tactics to what I'm using) that I was INVINCIBLE :evillaugh ! Unfortunately, by the time I got Charizard, FR/LG cards were illegal in official play . Although, after a tournament where I was stuck using a deck hastily cobbled from some spare cards I had (incidentally, I was creamed), I battled one of the guys who wiped me, and I got to use my painstakingly crafted Charizard deck. He lost. Badly.

Heck, Gold/Silver was the only game where I didn't just ditch my starter at the first reasonable opportunity.

Nostalgia be damned, I still say pokemon design has gotten better over time.
At least until Diamond/Pearl, when I was pretty unimpressed. Ruby/Sapphire had quite a lot of good stuff in it.

For quite a few people, the Johto region was their favorite (mine included); I'm more excited to get a new red Gyrados or a Tyranitar (and Lugia/Ho-oh awesomeness). For starters, Typhlosion was good, Feraligatr was a beast, but I'll still trade over my Infernape.

The whole design of the Chikorita line was boring, but at least they had decent stats *Not enought to make up for looking so boring though* and the less I say about Cyndaquil the better.

Personally, I prefer the current and previous Gen of Pokemon designs. The 1st Gen had some of my least favourite *Dragonite being one of the biggest offenders*, meh on second Gen, 3rd Gen introduced some of my favorite designs and mons *Aggron being one of my faves*, and 4th gen is just pretty awesome.

Meganium is really bad though, even compared to the other grass starters. Venusaur was a good wall in RSE and is an ok UU wall in DPP. Sceptile was ou in rse (I think, since he was one of the better subseeders) and does decently in this generation as well. Torterra would be good if not for that 4x ice weak. Meganium was kinda an ok wall in his previous incarnations, but there were always better options and in this generation he's largely overshadowed by most of the cast within his tier.

Typhlosion hits really hard in UU with scarfed or specced eruption. Feraligatr is a decent substitute for gyarados if you hate the 4x thunder weak or really need the extra 10 base power behind your ice move for some reason. He's also quite a good sweeper in UU as well. Meganium can't boast filling even a niche role as well as they can.

I don't' play competitively, so I honestly don't care a single bit. Anything works in-game, so I pick pokemon that I like and are awesome. Take your theorymon to somebody else. :P

Play however you want. Since we were talking about which starters are better (and better is an objective term), I compared them in the only objective manner possible, since preference is subjective. As you said, the actual game is pretty easy, so use whoever you want, but it's pretty hard to defend the claim that Meganium is the best starter of the bunch.

That'd be yellow ;)

Sadly, about 3 years ago my gameboy SP died after many long years of service. I haven't bothered to buy a DS since I don't have the money for it.

I once thought of converting pokemon to dnd stats....

Some people beat you to the punch. Here is someone's attempt to create both 3E stats for pokemon and a poke-master class. I think I have seen more complete versions of a similar project as well, but Google isn't finding any links for me.

Oh please, better is not always an objective term. :P
In context, I was speaking of creature design. I think that Meganium is the best designed fully evolved starter. I think it's cute and awesome-looking to a far greater extend than any of the other fully evolved starters.

As you said, the actual game is pretty easy, so use whoever you want, but it's pretty hard to defend the claim that Meganium is the best starter of the bunch.

No it most certainly isn't. Watch:

Venusaur looks fat and ugly and like it has skin problems, Charizard looks plain and oddly disproportionally skinny in the arms for what he's supposed to be, Feraligator looks monstrous and silly to me, Sceptile looks completely unbalanced like I have no idea how it moves around with that tail, Blaziken is a chicken so I can't take it seriously, Swampert is just too goofy-looking and I don't know what's up with its "tail" or how it supposedly moves around with it, Infernape is a primate and I think primates are creepy and I don't like them, and Empoleon has that weird thing surrounding his head so it looks like he can't turn his neck and his arms looks totally awkward like he tragically has no elbows.

That leaves Blastoise, Meganium, Typhlosion, and Torterra which aren't bad at all. Blastoise is jolly-looking and I think the water cannons are badass but I have trouble picturing him moving very efficiently and I like being able to picture a pokemon move, Typhlosion has a sleek and streamline look that also doesn't look like he's trying too hard to look badass like every other fire starter but he's just a little plain for it, Torterra looks jolly just like Blastoise and I think the tree growing out of his back is just adorable but he doesn't look capable of smiling which is sad. However, I think that Meganium looks cuter than all of these, is well proportioned, I can picture him moving realistically and non-awkwardly, and also looks big enough that nobody would mess with him; he's got that "real men wear pink" thing going on with the being a big dinosaur but wearing a giant pretty flower around his neck, like some massive bodybuilder wearing a tight, hot pink, T-shirt. Dare you to say something to him about it...

Claim defended. :P

All you are doing is offering your personal preference, which is purely subjective. Calling something 'better' in this case is inconclusive, and thus the term is generally reserved for objective use. For subjective use, people generally say "I like this" rather than "this is better" in order to respect others' opinions and emphasize that their statements merely reflect their own preference.

If you want to argue graphical and conceptual design and the ability to appeal to more people, go ahead. Please note, however, that Meganium is a brontosaurus with stumpy legs and a flower around its neck, while Feraligatr is a rockin crocodile who can do a dragon dance, and typhlosion is a weasel with fire around his neck. They look quite cool, and Meganium looks like a dinosaur that evolved in the wrong direction :P

Well if you'll go back to the original post in which I voice said opinion, you will find that what I said was:
I think Gold/Silver had the best starters. Meganium is hands down my favorite fully evolved starter to date, and Typhlosion is the only fully evolved fire starter I can stand.
All of the underlined are contextual indicators of opinion and personal preference.

But I don't. I was arguing about their graphical and conceptual design and the ability to appeal to me. :D

EDIT: Also, just as a fin fact for the day, did you know the term "brontosaurus" is obsolete? It's a misclassification generally used to reference Apatosaurus or Sauropods in general...

Fair enough. I still think that Meganium is th eworst because he contributes so little to the metagame, though.

I'm totally getting Soul Silver; Silver Version was my first game, and I LOVED it! I can only hope they include the bank thing like last time, because, by the end of the game, I essentially had UNLIMITED COSMIC MONIES!!!!

Also, since your Rival introduces himself as "???" (so you can name him yourself, later), I, being a young, silly child, thought his name actually WAS "???," and, when the police officer asked me, I wasn't going to LIE and call him something else!

So, yeah. For about three years, I played that game. I realized my mistake a couple months after I first started. D'oh!
