pokemon... i'm a horrible person for loving this game

as it should be obvious to anyone, pokemon is a horrible, nasty game.

not horrible is the gameplay is bad, no horrible in that is presents a world where small children (preteens), are thrown into the wild with nothing but a genetically unstable watchdog at their litteral side... it's trapped in some sort of pocket dimention to be called out only when it's master wishes so, and is forever bound to listen to his orders... even if they are "swim around this 2x2 panel area until i get bored".

upon meeting with a new pokemon, the trainer will either summon one of his beasts and proceed to kill the other one or should he wish to add it to his collection, simply beat it to an inch of it's life, then capture it.

now, should the trainer have the arbitrary 6 pokemon with him? off it goes into a "box", some timeless dimention (by evidence that a pokerus infected pokemon will not become better in a box), possibly forgotten as it's nothing but a useless bibarrel (which isn't entirely useless actually).

should they kill it & grow stronger, it might suddenly become a whole new creature.  seriously. your attack wiener dog has just killed a cat and turns into... a frikkin doberman. or you can just stop it mid-change, which i'm sure is a whole new level of stress on the poor thing.

as there are various combat competitions (with prize money) for these cute & cuddly cockfighters, steroids (HP UP, CARBOS, CALCIUM, ECT... that promote specific stat growth) & other growth enhancing effects, like the pokerus virus or the "Power X" line of items, are suggested and actually openly sold to the public!

yes, society as a whole is ok with this... it's a global phenom in the pokemon world to let your kids wander the streets and countryside with dangerous animals in tow. this isn't a recent trend inside the pokeverse, no... ever since there were people & pokemon on the planet, people have been capturing the pokemon that do everything from manipulate emotions to friggin distort time & space. remember when i said guard dog? i meant a small, portable WMD.

i knew pokemon was a horrible game but it only really hit me when i noticed i was forcefully breeding a shark with a blob so i could have babies, make them sick with the pokerus & shove them in stasis... so that in the future, should i need to breed a super 'mon, i can grab one of the sick stasis babies and pass on the virus to it.

and i'm ok with this.

Okay no. You're going to ignore the safari zone? I can't let this pass.
Okay, so we all know the "lol sending 10 year olds into the world etc." jokes, so I'll skip that part.
So some enterprising business tycoon thought "Okay, lets take the four or five most deadly pokemon (Tauros, Nidorino, Scyther, Kangaskahn, Pinsir, Nidorina, etc) and put them all in a confined unnatural habitat. Furthermore, we're going to send people in without their pokemon (Keeping in mind that in the beginning of every game they seem to treat wandering around in the grass without a pokemon to be suicidal), and have them throw rocks at the pokemon." But they had the forethought to anticipate the problem with this, so they gave you some treats to throw to placate them.
So in summation, you're throwing rocks at a bull with no animal of your own to defend you and you have a sack full of bull candy strapped to your chest. Yeah...

Not to mention the catch phrase sounds like something a junkie would say, gotta catch 'em all. Yeah gotta get all of the pokémon"hold on mom just let me catch this onyx and..... oh wait I haven't caught that yet, I mean one more after this Onyx then I'll go to school" to which the mother says "But honey today is saturday."

Excellent thread. Pokemon is awesome, no matter what age you are. I still want to collect Platinum Edition for my DS, but alas! Money does not grow off of trees. Well... it kinda does, but not in any way that helps me!

Don't bother if you've got Diamond/Pearl.

There's only a little difference, and...

WHY did I say That?

By all means, aquire it.

I don't own either, I was wanting for Platinum to come out; I always wait for the best of the Trio when Gamefreakreleases a new obsession. Why bother with two lesser versions, when you can simply opt to wait a bit and get the best of the best? Once I'm done wrangling my collection, and utter domination of the game, I'll be giving it to my {much} younger nephew so that he can enjoy it, so I might as well get the better of the series.

well it's right on the scenic route 34, overlooking the water. it would be a shame to not enjoy your stay at The Day Care.

(hmmm... the first pokemon breeding center is on route 34. rule 34 of the internet states: "if you can imagine it, there's porn of it". coincidence?)

LOL

I love and loathe Pokemon. it used to be on REALLY early on a Saturday morning in the UK with Jamie Rickers in 'Up on The Roof'!! My son used to jump on the bed and SHOUT 'POKEMON'S ON, pokemon, pokemon! so i'd get out of bed and watch it with him, now them, as i now have two sons.

Up to a certain point in their lives i'd make up stories at bed time for them (sentimental bit here) they love it - although eldest wont admit it now!!! It got to the point where even i bought a DS just to play it with them. And then we got Action Replay so we can catch 'em all up to Platinum.

I still get up on a saturday and sunday morning at stupid o'clock just to spend time with my kids, They grow up WAY too fast.

hmm... i dunno. the cartoon came out in '98 when i was 13 with a pair of 8 year old siblings and i'll admit to having some fond memories of hunkering down on aunt's couch & the floor and listening to the pokerap (we can't get cable at our place & we didn't yet have a sattelite). it was a guilty pleasure, kinda like watching dragonball Z. it was cheezy and goofy, but it had it's charms.

I never really got into it, it was just a lame rip-off of the game, trying to cash in on the success of the franchise. I never really felt anything for it. Did you know, that there are actually some people who think that the show came before the game? Talk about misinformation.

i'm not entirely unsurprised. both the show & the game came over at around the same time if memory serves. i learned of the game first through nintendo power then later the cartoon from my aunt, but i've know people who were introduced to the franchise the other way around.

either way, they've become two wholly different entities in their own accord, the game & the show.

Yeah, that's another thing, **** pikachu. Raichu is so much cooler, to say nothing of the scyther, Pidgeoto, Alakazam, Haunter, etc.

Also, why is team rocket still after Pikachu? I'm not talking about the stuff Vg Cats touched on, I mean, they have a goddamned TALKING MEOWTH! And he isn't special in any way; he learned to talk to impress a girl. Which means that hypothetically any pokemon could be tauight to talk. The sheer amount of scientific breakthroughs at their fingertips is staggering. But nope, they have to go after pikachu cause he has better than average IVs. For comparison, imagine if you had a talking cat. I doubt you'd try to steal somebody's golden retriever just because they conditioned it's "roll over" command to "Do a barrel roll!"

It's been theorized that the entire reason the Pikachu is that broken is that its got an ability that allows it to do damage to ground types with electric attacks.

Don't blame me for that one. It's TVTrope's fault...

Oh yeah, I just remembered a theory I have as to the canon world of pokemon. Pokemon: Humans accidentally destroyed all other lifeforms on their planet. They then genetically modified pokemon into existance to replace them. Pokeballs: work like some theoretical teleporters; they break down the being (killing it in the process, which is why you have to weaken the pokemon so it won't resist) and encode the precise makeup of each atom and their configuration. This allows them to be stored in computers and remade later.

IIRC he's really a glass cannon. Although speaking of, **** bronzong (also known as the cheating **** pokemon). So to begin with, he's psychic and steel, and we all remember how much fun psychics were. He has a solid amount of defense, and all types do 1x damage as far as type advantage is concerned, save fire and ground, which are only 2x. But here's the kicker; They have one of two abilities. Heat resistant, which reduces fire to a normal 1x effectiveness, or Levitate, which makes ground 0x. So yeah...

You want addiction?  Get into the shiny pokemon collection hobby :3  or even just competitive arena, your time will be gone forever with chaining, masuda method of breeding for shinies (which i'm currently doing), random number generation abuse.

Looking for the perfect iv's and the best traits (hardy, sassy, etc.) and getting items like leftovers and such o_o

I never encountered a shiny pokemon EVER in my years of playing.  started in red (no shinies in that game obviously :p since they didn't exist).  But played through ruby TWICE, sapphire once, emerald once, now I own pearl and played through that, have yet to randomly enounter a shiny pokemon.  I had to use the pokeradar...

5 days and an eventual chain of SIXTY nidoran(m) until a shiny grass patch showed up O_o  Now I have a beastly BLUE nidoking O_o

Bred out a Shiny Horsea, so now I have a beastly Swift-Swim Kingdra with an even Nature. I have Platinum, but guess how I got Pokerus? When I caught Giratina, he already had it naturely.

see that's why i'm glad i breed my pokerus like heck when i found out i had it on a 'mon & shoved it into a cold storage petrie dish, so that i can get access to it when i need it.
anyone have breeding tips? i'm currently working on a "better way to breed" and working on a Sharpedo.

currently my method is to:
1-breed with ditto until i get a female who's got a trait i like (in my sharpedo's case lonely= +attk/-def. it's a glass cannon... it doesn't need defense)
2-gave it an everstone so it passes the trait often to it's "kids"
3-bred it with ditto until i got a few 'mons with both the desired trait & with characteristics i like (proud of it's power=highest IV is attk)
4-raised it using the daycare to 20-25 ish & checked it's estimated IVs using one of the web-calculators
5-grab one of my Pokerus 'mon and infect the desired 'mon, return the infector to cold storage.
6-feed the 'mon carbos/calcium/iron/ect... to get the base EV at 100 then equip the desired 'mon with the proper "Power X" items to give it more EVs (with the pokerus it's usally 10-14 per fight) and train.

if step 4 doesn't bear fruit, repeat 3 until it does

the whole generally took me an afternoon of putzing about, all the while reading webcomics or manga so i don't get bored. currently the Sharpedo that's the end result of my "refined" training method looks like it might work. i estimate his end-game attack value at about 340-350. if this works i'll do it on a magnezone in a similar fashion. or maybe a bronzong.
