Police catch a drugdealer through WoW. Also, drugdealer's last name was Hightower, he was born to be a dealer.

I've heard of similar stories before being used to locate anything from pedophiles to crime lords, pretty intense stuff. Good work on the authorities!

Heh. Hope they got a +2 Revolver for their efforts, and managed to nab the +7 Jelly Donut/+3 Coffee along the way.

Well I was half hoping it'd be a Columbian drug lord or something...

but instead we get a bit pot dealer.... *shakes head*

As if pot were a drug in the first place.

I assume he meant dangerous drug.

Edit: As in dangerous like Heroin, not dangerous like alcohol.

Edit2: And I'm pretty sure that the absolutely, positively, fastest way to get a thread locked AND deleted would be for anyone to start a discussion that even remotely hinted at advocating illegal drug use. I'm just saying....

Minor note - as I don't get this bit (entirely).  I know some gamers on the forums are from Netherlands, or Spain or Canada, etc (in addition to the U.S.A.)  As this particular one is NOT universally illegal (ie. Amsterdam) - why would the topic be lockable?

In much of the US it is illegal and this being run by like a US company and such it would be seen as talking about them drugs and illegal substances/acts and stuff.... I think...

Alcohol is more dangerous to the people around the drunk than it is to the drunk themselves... At least in the short term. In the long term, the effects of addiction to alcohol is as bad as any other drug.

I'd rather not talk about this anymore. The guy was busted for trafficking in perscription meds, both schedule II and III. The marijuana is an afterthought.

The first two parts are horrid to begin with.

Pretty much.

When there are drugs like PCP, Meth, Ecstasy, Heroine, Cocaine and Crac out there....
Much more dangerous drugs those are.

Mary Jane bein illegal is why we are losing the Drug War in the first place. *If you think we are winning it, or that it's even close run then you are higher than the people you are throwing in prison. Just look at Phoenix Arizona.* Prohibition failed for a multitude of reasons. One of them of course being, that a substance which really isn't all that harmful was made illegal.  It being illegal is also directly funding terrorists. More so than we are funding them with our oil purchases.

I think this article would impress me more, if they were actually going after someone that was actually selling dangerous and illegal drugs to society. Not pot.

But he was selling 'dangerous' drugs.  Sched II and III, IIRC (whoa, that's a lotta 'I's).  Sched II includes morphine and the like and III lists Ketamine among its members.  Dood sold more than weed - as most dealers do.

It's also against the CoC that we all agree to when we sign up to promote illegal activity.  Promoting the use of a substance that's illegal - no matter our opinions on the matter - is against the CoC and, thus, a reportable action that can lead to all the normal stuff they do to naughty boys 'round these parts including, but not limited to: post modification, warning, canings and account suspension.

I'm not promoting the use of or selling of illegal substances.

I'm merely stating facts, and my opinion that there are better more productive uses of resources and time than catching a guy selling prescription drugs, and pot is all.

He still needs to be put away. Whether you think his crimes don't deserve attention or not is irrelevant. He is still doing something illegal that is hurting other people.

I know you're not.  I was just trying to answer PBN's question (I think).

Cocaine is a Sched II drug in most of the US.  Just sayin'.  It's not that the immense amount of time was totally worth it, but this guy wasn't exactly a good guy, either.

No one's advocating illegal drug use, but some of us do believe that it should not be illegal, and that people should be allowed to use it. Its a fine line, but saying I should be allowed to do something is not the same as telling someone to do it and break the law.

Because WotC is a subsidiary of Hasbro.

Headline, Fox News: "Hasbro website promotes marijuana use!"

I'm not saying it's fair or even right. But it is what it is. Personally, I've never been warned, much less suspended, so I suspect I'll be okay. I just don't want to see anyone get ORC slapped, or banned, is all.

Edit: Except for Shazamazon, of course, but he'd just be back on with a new name the next day, anyway.

Edit2: I suspect we'd be okay discussing Drug Policy in general, like pointing out the THC is actually a schedule III narcotic, aka unsuitable for any medical purpose. We should just be careful not to be seen as to promote the use of any illegal drug.

Sorry Naga, missed your post. Personally I agree with you completely. I live in a part of the country where the black market in marijuana is one of the driving forces of the economy, perhaps the largest. But this isn't our forum. It's Hasbro's. They may not draw that very fine line in the same place that we do. That's all I'm saying.

Either way eh? I just don't like it when Santa Claus cries and Frosty the Snowman melts... I'm the one who has to deal with that overweight elf-lover, and clean up after Frosty. Do you understand how much work is involved with all that?! No? I didn't think so!

So, please, don't troll the trolls, ladies and germs. You make my life a bloated, wet hell when you do.

Yar.  For whatever reason 'round these parts, bein' seen as a troll is all bad - unless you're green skinned behavior is directed toward someone that's considered a troll themself.  Then, it's all good.  That irritates me.

Feel free to report it. He's your buddy so I suppose you're expected to defend him. But hypocrisy is saying one thing and then doing the opposite (in common vernacular). Complaining about Shazamazon regularly circumventing his numerous bannings would only be hypocrisy if I were doing the thing I was complaining about. There is no moral equivalency between someone who breaks the rules we all agreed to observe, and someone who complains about someone who breaks the rules we all agreed to observe.

Bottom line is, you like him and are willing to bend the rules for him. I don't, and I'm not.

What I was referring to was calling someone out for CoC violations in a way that violates the CoC itself.  See, you can't act all better than him if you're going to go ahead and behave in the same way you accuse him of.  If that's not something you yourself have done, then my statement didn't apply.  Plenty of people have and do, however, and I felt like letting them know what I think of that.

I'm not in the habit of reporting little stuff like this, either, and I also don't go out of my way to report stuff people say about my friends.  I bend the rules for everyone equally, if that makes sense.

Oh, one more thing.  Complaining about someone breaking the rules we've all agreed to observe is against the rules we've all agreed to observe.  It's considered baiting, actually, and was used quite effectively by the anti-4e trolls during the heat of the edition war to get the pro-4e people in trouble.  The most famous example I can think of is a cat named PsionX (at first ;) ).  See, everyone knew his socks were actually him.  He used the same avvy, same sig, etc on purpose.  Cuz whenever an 4venger publicly called him out on it, he could and would report it and get them warned or temped.  It may not make sense, but it is a part of the CoC.

^ Precisely.

Nothing against anybody personally, I tend to hold everyone in equal regard and respect, whether they be a close friend or not. I don't tend to report things anywhere online myself, I know how dangerous that is, and usually people get huffy over simple mis-communication or because they themselves have personal issues to deal with - which makes them react to any kind of comment in the same way, regardless of who or where that comment came from.

However, I know more Trolls who like to Troll the Trolls, then the actual Trolls themselves. "Trolling for Trolls" is a common online sport, and everybody does it now and then. Some more then others, some with intent. Plain and simple. If I see someone (or a group of people) being hypocritical and "trolling the Troll(s)", then I call them out on it. And I expect if I were to act the same way, somebody would call me out on it too, so I could stop myself.

Me though? I know what an actual Troll is, and what actual Troll Statements/Remarks/Etc read like, so I always give people the benefit of the doubt. Chances are they just made an off hand remark that came out the wrong way, or they are just opinionated (which rubs people the wrong way), and so I don't report "petty Trolling". I only report the real deal, and only when it applies to me personally. Most other people I've met online though? They'll report anything that goes against their opinion as "trolling", just because they dislike the person for not agreeing with them.

Law & lawlessness...it's Newtonian almost.  Measure, counter-measure; an endless dance of which there is much toe-stepping, spilled drinks, and freaking-a-plenty.  ex) More lethal criminals -> kevlar is standard now -> Teflon bullets -> nastier legislation vs. them, better ballistics forensics, etc. etc. etc.  Dance never ends.  Are you foxtrotting w/ your best girl, breakdancing alone but garnering an audience, or moshing w/ a slew of pressed masses?

Most do it, some are probably doing it as they read (another open window for that choice .pdf?), and some refuse to dance at all, content to stand by the punch bowl and make small talk, which is fine, but we have this weird legacy of spurring on our more gallant outlaws for some reason.  Perhaps if this recession turns more sour, a modern, digital Bonnie & Clyde might do the talk show circuit...they might even make a movie about th-  oh, right...

This guy (drug trafficer), peddling drugs on World of Respawning; he was trying to do the robot at the square dance.  Wrong venue, wrong dance, or, "simply stupid" if you prefer, not even counting moral issues, just business ones.  With all the other resources at his disposal, free ones, more discrete ones even, etc., well, this is just the more clever species culling the weak one.  Natural selection?  The cops adapted to the new times, this man thought he was as well, the dance played out, end game, literally, in this case.  What a fool.

Also, it's not like they don't archive the Hell out of everything 0 & 1-based, right?  And you know Blizzard would totally play ball cuz' they don't need to be black-listed for defending a drug dealer's rights, even legitimate ones.  If anything, this will just be more (free) PR they can peddle (irony...far out) in turn to net more customers (addicts) Wink.  Not exactly enamored of the commercials featuring Ozzy, Mr. T., Vern Troyer .  Digital addiction is worse than ever btw.  This will be worth millions in commercial time.  I'm sure plenty of dutiful parents could breath easier knowing Tommy & Suzzy are playing a game by a "moral" company that'll "protect" them, all in the safety of their own home where the folks can keep an eye on them...not out on the town, getting hopped up on 'x'.

Coincidentally, this was one of the reasons pastor mom was cool w/ us playing D&D back in the day @ home, encouraging it even, whereas more than a few reactionary zealots on her very council couldn't understand (during the height of the Satanic Panic) why she'd allow us to be exposed to such "evil".  Simple, "They use both brain hemispheres to play it so they're learning, fosters creativity, more friendships due to social interaction, less exposure to outside elements that are harmful."  We just thought she was really hip (@ the time).  Err.  Few years later, we got church funding for books & food to play 2nd ed in the choir practice room.  That is decisive action and how you disarm a paper tiger and groom a forward-thinking one.

Odd that I remember a wide host of friends and acquaintances at EverQuest's advent ('98+), and even now, w/ WoW's popularity, that were burning joints between raids like clockwork.  If anything, I found the sedentary nature of the game only facilitated further (ab)use of the drugs, largely weed.  But you really need to be sharp if it's pen & paper (brain @ work, not CPU).  This is not to say that I didn't see a handful of guys and a few girls bust out best supporting actor w/ their super RP during a heady buzz, but being ripped out of your mind and trying to factor weather, multiple initiatives, % of strategy 'x' vs. 'y', and the like is likely maddening.  Long story short, I bet there's a higher incidence of addiction in the digital set vs. the pen & paper one.  Just a theory.

So, coming back round to the OP: cops usually outsmart the crooks.  Better funding.  Turn the tables financially, you get Juarez, Afghanistan, etc.  The competitive edge coupled w/ the right resources is everything.  This guy was just stupid and got what he had coming.  Another more nimble dancer will take his place, life goes on.

Related problem: more innovative dealers in-the-know will see this story & its details, hear this from net buzz, read it, etc., fold that into their repetoire, and adapt to it to find a better "way" to ply their contraband.  So, the cops will have to find a better way in turn.

War on Drugs: Anyone seen "Traffic"?  Really turned some heads here (filmed a chunk in my city).  Michael Douglas is the nation's new drug czar, but his own daughter @ home is now an addict.  Drama, denial, etc., plays out, finally turns to the press release towards the end he gives at the White House when it comes to a head.  (paraphrased) "We're in this War on Drugs.  It can be won and there are allegedly clear sides bla bla bla...it's just, some of these drug users are friends and family members.  How do you make war on your own family?"
