| #1werralAug 24, 2008 19:52:11 | Not sure if anyone else has seen this site http://politicalcompass.org/ I thopught it was interesting that this site uses asystem similar to the old AD&D alignment system - a four way track. YOu can do a quiz to find where you are and look up where various figures stand on the basis of the same test. Also the site explains some of my confusions - like why "liberals" mean the left (socialist leaning) in the US but the economic right (pro market forces) everywhere else. |
| #2spearspikeAug 24, 2008 20:40:30 | Hmmm. This was fun. Here is mine: |
| #3farmer42_dupAug 24, 2008 20:48:24 | Hmmm. This was fun. Here is mine: I thought it was interesting. I came of near you, with a -4 on the economic scale instead of your -1.something. I fluctuate a bit, depending on the survey with things like this. In standard American parlance, I'm a strong libertarian with liberal leanings, just left of moderate. I really fluctuate depending on whether they ask about the arts and/or gun control (I support the former, and despise the latter,) so take the numbers with a grain of salt or two. |
| #4squarecircleAug 24, 2008 21:48:43 | Your political compass Economic Left/Right: -4.62 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.41 Really, although this test offers 2 lines instead of one, it really isn't complex enough. Even within economic politics or within social politics things get pretty complex. For example, two "socially liberal" people might disagree on a lot of things. |
| #5samwiseAug 24, 2008 22:01:17 | Really, although this test offers 2 lines instead of one, it really isn't complex enough. Even within economic politics or within social politics things get pretty complex. More than that, most of the questions are quite blatantly loaded, as well as having a considerable range of complexity beyond the zero-sum, two opposing viewpoints, given. For the most part those tests are focused on making everyone want to come out as a Libertarian, revealing your innermost desires and what not, unless you are really committed to an extreme variant ideology. Unfortunately the center is not all committed to Libertarianism, even if they oppose extremes of Communism, Fascism, or Democracy. |
| #6cannaithAug 24, 2008 22:03:07 | Economic Left/Right: -6.88 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.77 However I felt that the questions were flawed and this hardly touched on my political opinions. I don't think the results were very accurate at all. As an amusing note though, I apparently share my political view with Ghandi. |
| #7farmer42_dupAug 24, 2008 22:46:00 | Economic Left/Right: -6.88 "Who's your diaper daddy? Who's your diaper daddy?" Sorry, I couldn't resist the reference to Robin WIlliams. |
| #8cool_dude1010Aug 24, 2008 23:04:54 | http://politicalcompass.org/facebook/pcgraphpng.php?ec=3.88&soc=4.62 I was very sad I'm not as fascist as Hitler ? This is really ******* me off. |
| #9KillerGMAug 24, 2008 23:56:29 | http://politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-8.50&soc=-5.95 Yeah, so my husband is right in calling me a Communist. Whatever! :P |
| #10DralenanAug 25, 2008 0:19:16 | Kind of like the political quiz the Libertarian party came out with. Before I take this, I'll go ahead and out myself as a Libertarian moderate, with liberal ethics, and a degree of conservative values. http://politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-6.38&soc=-5.64 |
| #11calronmoonflowerAug 25, 2008 2:55:19 | I almost got a bullseye. I think of myself as an independent and go with what I think is best rather than any particular party. However, this seem a little off. Some of the question I would have to preferred to answer in a different manner, but the option wasn't available. |
| #12NovacatAug 25, 2008 3:07:06 | I couldn't take it. The statements were often so vague that I couldn't tell what I was supposed to agree/disagree with, or made assumptions that throw the entire meaning of the statement in a different direction. Also the lack of a neutral option was disconcerting. |
| #13werralAug 25, 2008 3:21:40 | http://politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-8.50&soc=-5.95 Actually if he means a communist (as in any communist state : the USSR, Cuba, East Germany etc...) would be on the authoritarian left, rather than the liberatarian (though Marx's original theories were different, it is not unfair to base one's opinion of communism on its application rather than its theory). So your husband would be wrong to call you a communist based on this quiz. Have you guys read the FAQ on the site by the way? They do try to explain why the questions are set the way they are. For example there are no "neutral" answers so you can't duck difficult issues and there are no "correct" answers just go with your gut feeling - it's anonymous (unless you want to tell people) so there's no reason to temper your answers. Also they consider moderates as more similar to moderates in different quadrants than to extremists in their own. Also the reading list under each categorary are interesting. |
| #14kurskAug 25, 2008 6:42:21 | I couldn't take it. The statements were often so vague that I couldn't tell what I was supposed to agree/disagree with, or made assumptions that throw the entire meaning of the statement in a different direction. Also the lack of a neutral option was disconcerting. That's how these things are designed. Not a scientific look, just someone's opinions put into question form then plotted on a graph. |
| #15spearspikeAug 25, 2008 9:54:45 |
Ya. I felt that some of my more conservative positions weren't registered. |
| #16KillerGMAug 25, 2008 12:51:30 | Actually if he means a communist (as in any communist state : the USSR, Cuba, East Germany etc...) would be on the authoritarian left, rather than the liberatarian (though Marx's original theories were different, it is not unfair to base one's opinion of communism on its application rather than its theory). So your husband would be wrong to call you a communist based on this quiz. Dude, it was a joke. He actually called me a Communist because I liked the lobster appetizer more than the soft pretzel one (one was "pink" and one was "all-American). I shot back "Capitalist Pig-Dog" and we moved on. Besides, I was talking about the theories of Communism rather than its actual application, which are more libertarian than its authoritarian reality, so there. :P |
| #17_jayne_cobb_Aug 25, 2008 12:54:06 | Economic Left/Right: -8.25 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.13 Apparently I'm closest to Gandhi: |
| #18werralAug 25, 2008 15:45:11 | Dude, it was a joke. He actually called me a Communist because I liked the lobster appetizer more than the soft pretzel one (one was "pink" and one was "all-American). I shot back "Capitalist Pig-Dog" and we moved on. So maybe a Lobster appetizer vs Pretzel question is needed in the quiz - we should suggest this to the site's authors. |
| #19_jayne_cobb_Aug 25, 2008 15:46:40 | So maybe a Lobster appetizer vs Pretzel question is needed in the quiz - we should suggest this to the site's authors. Or maybe… You possess an hot apple pie. Do you: a) Eat it. b) Revere it. c) Share it. d) **** it. |
| #20KillerGMAug 25, 2008 16:01:43 | So maybe a Lobster appetizer vs Pretzel question is needed in the quiz - we should suggest this to the site's authors. Agreed! :D |
| #21farmer42_dupAug 26, 2008 0:30:58 | Or maybe… Fixed it to better match the general tone of the quiz. |
| #221_ton_ghostAug 26, 2008 13:16:53 | Nice find Werral. Think I scoped about a -3.75 and a -3 but I get alot of flak for my socio-political views...that and the reanimation proplem. Yes, the test could be more discriminating, still, it's decidedly higher brow than most of the crap out there. Some of it is very polarizing, but still, I'm glad to see more surveys like these then the myriad of kiddie sh-t I see on MySpace surveys about "how much are you like paris hilton" or "how emo are you". I guess it's weird for me sometimes. Hypocritical and/or contradictory in the mainstream given alot of the ideology and dogma I identify w/. -Big supporter of the arts (product of my environment, history & degrees), but like Farmer42, I'm anti gun control. Very pleased they overturned that draconian measure in DC not along ago. -Believe heavilly in corp accountability & scrutiny, but would totally gut welfare and some other social programs due to their inefficiency & waste. -Rabid enforcement & harsher sentencing of violent crime, capital punishment, reinstitute chain gangs, etc., but legalize or at least decriminalize weed and tax it like tobacco. Throw out most sex laws, save **** and ****, etc. **** & oral is still illegal in NC and Texas... ![]() -Some abortion reform but same sex marriage is fine and adoption tax incentives for them and the like. Fair is fair. -Am pro nuclear power in addition to solar & other less efficient ones -Increase intelligence spending, cut more carriers & $80mil jets for now while increasing military standards and pay (both are low). Quality, not quantity. -Make others more accountable; cut some frivolous foreign aid and increasing education and interior spending. -Pro small business, anti outsourcing. Pro zombie, anti pirate. |
| #23zombie_babiesAug 26, 2008 13:27:00 | Pro zombie And that, folks, is all that matters ... ;) EDIT: Whoa. Just took the test and it told me I'm closest to Gandhi. Interesting. |
| #241_ton_ghostAug 26, 2008 13:46:05 | And that, folks, is all that matters ... ;) You can count on my support for the Zombie Primary. They always vote en masse.... I mean afterall, children are the future, yes? EDIT: Whoa. Just took the test and it told me I'm closest to Gandhi. Interesting. It's not terribly indicative of your true grounding, but the approximation is interesting to say the least. I mean, I love chicken vindaloo, but Ghandi is a little out there for me ;) ... |
| #25werralAug 26, 2008 14:00:58 | Animate Voter! |
| #26farmer42_dupAug 26, 2008 14:30:20 | Animate Voter! So why are we talking about Chicago voters again? |
| #271_ton_ghostAug 26, 2008 14:36:41 | So why are we talking about Chicago voters again? You sir, are definetly on point. Nj. Not too many would get the Daley (or was it Daily?) schtick. "vote early, vote often..." Anyone see the Simpsons episode where Sideshow Bob is running against Quimby and they pull some Daley-esque measures, counting the dead, even the dead animals interred in the pet cemetary? Oh, and they're always rolling out the pirate, ninja, or zombie stuff at Gencon and this year I saw some political gimmicky stuff like Vote Zombie where it's a red/white/blue motif, fist in the air clenching a brain or a decomposing Uncle Sam WWII era, "I want you (r) brains)." |
| #28stardrifterAug 26, 2008 20:07:32 | What annoyed me the most about this was there's no "I don't care/undecided" option in the middle, but I pretty much landed on nelson mandela's head. There was quite a few questions that made me wish for the fifth option. |
| #29philelmoreAug 27, 2008 19:31:46 | What annoyed me the most about this was there's no "I don't care/undecided" option in the middle, but I pretty much landed on nelson mandela's head. There was quite a few questions that made me wish for the fifth option. That is because "I don't care/Undecided" isn't a rational option. It is a non-concept. |
| #30Titanium_DragonAug 28, 2008 2:16:31 | Here's my result, Left/Right = -3.5, Libertarian/Authoritarian = -4.92 However, I feel that it, like all such things, is an oversimplification, and while it does tell you more than just one axis does, it still doesn't tell you everything. More than that, most of the questions are quite blatantly loaded, as well as having a considerable range of complexity beyond the zero-sum, two opposing viewpoints, given. I dunno about the questions being loaded; I know people who would respond otherwise to many of them. I'm not a Libertarian in the sense of the Libertarian party; I'm very much a socialist, though I do have some... shall we say "interesting" views for a liberal (pro-eugenics based on actual science, for instance; something not possible right now, but possible in the future, though I feel mass genetic manipulation of the populace is vastly preferable as it is less likely to start a civil war). -Big supporter of the arts (product of my environment, history & degrees), but like Farmer42, I'm anti gun control. Very pleased they overturned that draconian measure in DC not along ago. I didn't even see a single gun control question on mine. I honestly don't think its particularly meaningful; I know people who love guns at pretty much every point on the political spectrum. EDIT: Whoa. Just took the test and it told me I'm closest to Gandhi. Interesting. Lots of people here would be "close to Ghandi" because he's the only guy on the chart on the lower-left quadrant. There's really something of a void there in terms of prominent leaders. What annoyed me the most about this was there's no "I don't care/undecided" option in the middle, but I pretty much landed on nelson mandela's head. There was quite a few questions that made me wish for the fifth option. Its not really a big deal, honestly, and is unlikely to make much of a difference. I'm pretty neutral on some, but put in very slight leans as agree or disagree. It puts me in more or less the correct spot. |
| #31zombie_babiesAug 28, 2008 8:56:47 | Lots of people here would be "close to Ghandi" because he's the only guy on the chart on the lower-left quadrant. There's really something of a void there in terms of prominent leaders. Right. I landed almost right on his dot. Obviously anyone that falls into that quadrant would be "close to Ghandi". I simply felt it was an amusing way to relate the way my test results turned out since I was so close to where they decided to place him on their lil' chart. Nothing more. ;) |
| #32_jayne_cobb_Aug 28, 2008 9:13:55 | Lots of people here would be "close to Ghandi" because he's the only guy on the chart on the lower-left quadrant. There's really something of a void there in terms of prominent leaders. Which says much of the kinds of people we have as leaders and goes far to explain the sad, sorry state they've made of the world. |
| #33hanzo187Aug 28, 2008 21:17:58 | When I did it, I was slightly right (around the 2 mark) and slightly libertarian (again, around 2).I didn't even see a single gun control question on mine. I honestly don't think its particularly meaningful; I know people who love guns at pretty much every point on the political spectrum. Yeah, I didn't see one, either. That definitely comes like a author./liber.-style question, though I will say I am extremely against gun control. |
| #34dispaminiteAug 28, 2008 21:51:29 | Having taken the quiz, apperently, I'm close to being an anarchist.... Economic Left/Right: 7.38 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.36 |
| #35jimprofitAug 29, 2008 2:29:34 | Economic Left/Right: 6.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.95 I've always considered myself a libertarian, frankly the test is a bit faulty, it doesn't take into consideration the extremity of positions as opposed to personal thoughts.. For example, if it were up to me CP would be legal and on high demand, you could buy cocaine at 7/11, and taxes would be low to none. And yet I'd make abortion punishable by public flogging. Humiliation is a social measure to prevent people from commiting a misdeed, the pain of a flogging is a physical measure. Because naturally as creatures, we seek to avoid pain.. I'd say execution, but frankly a public flogging wouldn't be that much more expensive, and wouldn't carry the burden of all that "oh you're a hypocrite" ********. Because hey, they're still alive aren't they? More importantly sense they might have a family and such, and they are innocent, I wouldn't want to take them away from their family, even if they are the scum of the Earth.. But we will engineer people to know right from wrong by setting clear guidelines of morality. If it were up to me the only things that would be illegal are theft, child/animal abuse, (Not sexual abuse, but like beat them till they can't move abuse) and murder. (Which abortion would fall under) Robert E. Heinlein had a very simaler philosophy and was a self-proclaimed libertarian. He wrote the book Starship Troopers. The book was very different from the movie. |
| #36zyfaxAug 29, 2008 11:50:08 | mine: L/R: -7,88 A/L: -1,08 I also thought the test was flawed. while I think my position is somewhat correct, I really missed some questions. |
| #37Titanium_DragonAug 29, 2008 21:18:30 | Which says much of the kinds of people we have as leaders and goes far to explain the sad, sorry state they've made of the world. I think its because most of them are too smart, too honest, too competant, or too lazy to become politicians. |

I've run lots of friends through this in the past, most came out bottom left. Only one I knew was top right! Is it skewed bottom left or do I simply associate with people from the same quadrant as me? Discuss... I |
| #41goblin_prideNov 20, 2008 9:34:48 | Is this the forum equivalent of non-violent resistance? Pointing to the uneven nature of the censorship by bumping threads from the bottom of the list? You could call it that. |
| #42werralNov 20, 2008 9:39:08 | When I read the OP, and having been a fan of politicalcompass.org for years I immediately thought. That surprises me given some of the discussions we've had here in the past. I'd expect bottom right and moderately top right to be equally common as bottom left. I think the "bottom left" answers are closer to what people think they SHOULD say, and that tends to skew the results. |
| #43Johnny_AngelNov 20, 2008 19:47:47 | I seem to be almost dead center in the middle, so I'm not quite sure how to take that. http://politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-0.38&soc=-1.33 edit: Thinking back on the quiz. I think I would have probably been even closer to the center if there were more answers to choose from. In regards to some of the questions the answers were close to my beliefs, but still didn't exactly cover my thoughts on the issue. I'm really not sure where the results place me in the grand scheme of things or what they mean in regards to my political beliefs. |
