Am I the only one here who is jazzed to Hell and back about Portal 2?

Also, I need a co-op partner, so if you're going to be playing on Steam (Mac, PC, or PS3), and you need a partner as well, we should get together and make sweet, beautiful science together.

... Kinda creepy there, Novacat.  And sorry, but I'm gonna be going co-op with my SO.  Then again, IIRC he got motion sickness from Portal, so it may be slow going.

It's hard to overstate my satisfaction. <3

I cannot WAIT for this game!! :D  I first played Portal with the Orange Box, and I have to say that I would have gladly shelled out a full $60 for just Portal.  In fact, I didn't really play the other games - my husband played through the Half-Life 2 stuff, and we sporatically played Team Fortress (but most of the players were such asshats that we decided to go back to a more civilized game - Halo!!   ).  But man, I played the hell out of some Portal.

And I'm with EE here, I'm going to do co-op with my husband.  That, and I'll be playing on my 360.

I am honestly more excited about Portal 2 than I was about Dragon Age 2, and that's saying something!!

Have you seen the "Investment Opportunity" commercials?  Hilarious!!

So Portal 2 comes out this Tuesday, and it's already Friday. My order from Amazon.com hasn't shipped yet, so I'm thinking it will have to ship tomorrow, since I doubt they'll overnight it out to everyone who pre-ordered.

I've been torn between wanting to find out more about the game, and the fear of seeing spoilers. I don't want to ruin the story for myself (which I'm sure is amazing), but we've gotten only scant previews to whet our appitites and satiate our anticipation.

I know nothing about this game. What is it even about?
RPG, shooter, puzzles...

Is a roleplaying game where you shoot things to solve puzzles and advance through the story.
3 guess as to what it is that you shoot...
#8

KillerGM

Apr 15, 2011 18:26:53
It's a puzzle game from a first-person perspective.  The original found you in an "Aperture Science" test facility, and you go through a series of experiements with a "portal gun" - you shoot one color portal and then another, and can immediately go through to the other side.

It's simple and interesting.  The puzzles are difficult enough to keep your attention, but not so frustrating that you want to throw the controller.

And the "helpful" AI that guides you through the tests is the best.  I <3 GlaDos!  The flavor of the world is really really entertaining.

There really is no way to explain how compelling Portal is, you just need to play it. Really, go get it right now. There aren't many games I feel are absolute "must haves" but Portal is definitely one of them.

I've already called around to get prices for headsets. I definitely wouldn't want to try something as complex as Portal 2 co-op without being able to talk. On an actual keyboard? I can type fast enough to make up the difference, but in a PS3, having to type with a controller? No way.

He was pretty quick, so it wasn't that bad.  The next guy was a douchebag and he lagged, then started bitching at me.  LOL.

Anyhow, yes, it is awfully complex.  The puzzles are interesting and there appears to be a lot of secret levels in co-op.  I'm done playing co-op for now until I find a regular partner to play with.

I just finished up the single player game, and I must say, I am thoroughly satisfied with that experience. And yes, the ending was fantastic. Epic, even, in ways the first game couldn't have been.

However, now I want to make some headway with Co-Op mode, but the damned Playstation Network is down for maintenance for the last day and a half. O.o

whelp, i gots me portal 2 after work on thursday night, right before EB games closes. i then had to download it for like 2-3 hours cause my DVD player has crapped out. hooray for steam!

still managed to play the intro though on thursday.

i woke up at 9am on friday, said "Why I'd be late for work, but it's my day off! With such a beautiful morning i wonder what i should do? " and then proceeded to play portal until 4pm, loving every minute of it. i have replayed the ever-loving crap out of that end credit song.

i then got some KFC to snack on and watched a Dr.Who marathon on Space until 11pm, took a shower and went to bed.

this possibly ranks up there in the "best day ever" category.

also a question for those who've finished the game (due to VERY LARGE SPOILER ALERT):
Show

am i the only one who's more scared of GLaDOS now? she's going to kill Chell in the only way the portal gun cannot help: simply let the ravages of time wear her down and kill her.

let Chell go, keep on Sciencing with the knowledge that Chell will die (eventually). they say the best revenge is living well so... i-i... i think this mean GLaDOS wins in the end.

I'm more afraid because it means, contrary to typical villian behavior, she is actually learning from her mistakes.

exactly my point

Show

i'm doing assumptions here but i'm guessing that one of  GLaDOS's programming constraints simply won't let her kill indescriminately.

in portal 1 she used the neutrotoxin in the last battle since it was obvious Chell was here to kill her, while in the other rooms were just various experiments where death is one possible result. if GLaDOS wanted Chell dead she would simply flood the entire facility with neurotoxin.

this way our fav supercomputer learned that Chell's determination to stay alive meant that she would simply succeed at all challenges put forth and after having not simply being bested but witnessing Wheatly being beaten kinda let her realize that if there is a chance of survival, Chell will go for it regardless of whatever pits of acid you place in front of her.

so GLaDOS took the option of disposing of Chell in a way that would cause her the least amount of problems: by letting Chell go. Chell will die. it'll take a while, but Chell will die.

and GLaDOS can keep on sciencing without any interruptions.

Major Spoilers for single player
We went to space.  Seriously.  We shot a portal at the friggin' moon.  Wikileaks.  Task.  Force.

On, and remember: make lemon-based incendiaries and burn life's house down.

I know, right?!?  That just happened!

Single-player spoilers, GLaDOS learning
And re: GLaDOS learning and letting Chell go ... well, in the final fight it was night (you shoot the moon), and you rode the elevator up and it was daytime in a field so ... I'm not so sure it's for reals.

Also, at the end of the co-op campaign, you discover GLaDOS really hasn't learned anything at all...

Co-op Spoilers
Since she's just using you to get to more human test subjects.

EscherEnigma

Spoilers, GLaDOS learning
Oh, I think she learned just fine.  Remember, it's only Chell that gave her trouble.  Other test subjects she apparently killed without problem.  So from her perspective it isn't the killing that's the problem, it's the killing Chell that's the problem.

As for the day/night bit... I think it makes sense, actually.
Co-op spoilers
'cause if you remember, in the co-op GLaDOS mentioned at one point that you had never met a human.  So that puts the entire co-op campaign solidly before Chell wakes up in the conclusion to Atlas and P-body.  Not surprising that she would be out for a while, she did go  to the moon and back1.

So my guess on the timeline is Chell goes to the moon, comes back a little worse for the trip, and while she's catching up on some sleep you have GLaDOS running the co-op initiative to get access to more non-Chell test-subects.

Yeah, I was remembering incorrectly that the end fight and the end of the game happened with no time passing between.

Co-op Spoilers
I was under the impression that it was completely after Chell left, but it makes sense if it was while Chell was recovering from being in space.  TBH, it was a bit of time between when I finished the single player campaign and the co-op one, so my memory was a bit sketchy.

Yeah, I went and did some of the developer commentary, but aside from that, replay value is non-existant. I liked the challenge mode from the first game: same test chambers, but with an extra challenge added in. Like; complete the level in 60 seconds, complete the level without walking, hey we stole your box but complete the level anyways, ect. Good stuff.

According to an interview I watched (no, I can't remember when or where), The single player campaign is supposed to be about 11/2 times as long as in the first one. It took me a total playing time of 11 hours... for a game I paid full price for, that's pretty short. If I compare it to the Starcraft campaign (which took like 20 hours and has a lot of replay value and is an extra, not the main focus of the game) then that's kinda dissapointing.

It's true that Portal involved more funnies, but the SCII campaign doesn't feature other people so there was no annoyance involved there. And the campaign was pretty challenging as well. Moreso then Portal in many cases.

I tend to look at entertainment value in terms of dollars per hour with a movie as the baseline.

A two hour movie costs $13, which is $6.50 per hour. At 11 hours Portal 2 is $71.50 worth of entertainment. If you paid less than $71.50 for it you got a deal.

But why does it have no replay value? For me Portal had tons of it. I played it through several times cos it was just so much fun. It's kinda like a roller coaster: even when you know where all the hills and dips and curves are you ride it over and over again cos the ride is just such a blast.

Because once you know the answers to the puzzles and the way the stories go, there's very little left to still explore.

I'm pretty sure I could solve every puzzle in one go now that I've played them before, so there's no challenge left, which means there's no fun left to be had either.

I guess we just view things differently. To me there is tons of fun to be had just playing around with the physics in various environments and finding new, quicker or more efficient ways to solve many of the puzzles. To me the surprise/novelty factor is not the most important.
