I think he needs to re-read that Constitution thing...

No no, that's magic and magic is bad...the bible says so. This is praying to a supernatural being in the hopes that the laws of physics will bend and rain will suddenly appear, which is not magic at all and therefore ok.

Asking people to pray for rain isn't bad. It won't work, I get that, but it has been proven that prayer is a comfort to some people so it can't hurt to let them pray.

Apr 21, 2011 19:50:55 It is my understanding when he said, "by the power vested in me through the Constitution and Statutes of Texas" he was talking about the Constitution of Texas, not the Federal Constitution and I don't think asking people to pray is the same thing as starting the First Christian Temple of Texas, so I don't see any treading on the Separation of Church and State. Furthermore, I do relieve that Native Americans still do Rain Dances and other things. Sure, we took the land from them and then gave them back the worst parts of it, but no one is telling the Native Americans today that they can't do whatever the hell they want to. In fact, it is my understanding that they don't have to stay on the Res if they don't want to.

There's more to the First Amendment than that. If, for example, the government were to officially support one religion but still allow others, would that be ok? No, it would still violate the Constitution. Separation of church and state means exactly that and you can violate it without banning other religions.

My issue isn't that he's asking people to pray, but that he's doing it in his official capacity as governor and not just as one person to another. Well, that and the fact that the same people that will look at rain dances and laugh at how silly they are will set aside a three day period for rain prayers and will then get offended if you laugh at them. Actually its more the second one than the first.
