Question for Cat Lovers

Jan 12, 2009 10:11:51 Since many D&D players are also cat lover, I wanted to ask a question.

I am going on vacation for 10 days in June and some cat-loving friends have offered to care for my cat while I'm gone. He will be about 10 months old by the time I go.

The friends have three cats already, all older, indoor cats (my cat is indoor as well). I am planning on them watching our cat in their home as they live far enough away that daily visits to my home would be difficult.

We are planning on taking our cat to their house twice a month over the next few months and then more as the time gets closer so our cat can become familiar with the location and the other cats before we drop him off for 10 days.

My question is: does this seem like a good way to do this? I'm worried because I've read that cats can get freaked out outside of their environment. However, my cat is very friendly and loves all over these people when they come visit so it seems like it would work out okay. I think the benefits of having people around (even in a new environment) would outweight the negatives of my cat being lonely in his own home.

Thoughts?

Jan 12, 2009 11:00:57 in my experience with the many years of travel and 35 years of cats in my life even as a newborn :P... if you are only going to be gone 10 days...there is no real need for your cat to leave his home, depending on your cats eating habits and "potty" volume, every 3 days is fine, cats wont usually eat themselves to death and if s/he eats dry food primarily, then a 3 day supply at a time is enough..water is best if fresh water is daily, but clean cool water can hang out for 3 days ok too...but thats just my 2 cents :D

Test your cats pee after you get back.

Jan 12, 2009 21:08:57 I would say that you should probably leave the cat at your home. Leave plenty of food and water out and clean the litter box before leaving. You can have your friends come over and check on the cat every 2 to 3 days.

If you want to have the cat stay at your friends' house during that time then that is also fine. Your cat seems young and young cats like to play with everybody. Older cats like to not be bothered, for the most part. If you friend has older cats it may be best to have the cats get use to each other. More or less the older cats will more than likely learn to avoid the younger cat, and if the younger cat does become to much of a bother they will bat it. If this happens when the cats are brought together to get use to each other, I would suggest having the cat that did the batting be placed in a carrying kennel. Place the kennel in the center of the room. This will allow for the cats to get use to each other without being able to attack each other.
