First off, this is a thread about the mythological story, not a religious deal.

Now to the point. I'm a fan of Norse mythology and I've got some questions about Ragnarok. I've read a few brief versions of what will happen but I was wondering if anyone here had some more in depth knowledge that they'd be willing to share.

As I understand, it starts with Loki being imprisoned by Odin and Thor. His struggles against the bonds shake the earth, so that combined with Jormungandr's writhing and the hound Garmr's baying, the fetters that hold the Fenrir Wolf in Asgard will be broken. Once he is free, Fenrir howls, which in turn frees Loki and summons the giants for the final battle. From there, Loki and Fenrir lead the attack against the Aesir with the giants coming to destroy their ancestral enemies.

Odin rides forth on his eight-legged horse and attacks Fenrir, knowing that he will be killed by the Wolf. With his father dead, Tyr plants a foot in Fenrir's lower jaw and uses the stump of the hand that was bitten off to force the upper jaw wide. He stabs the Wolf with his spear, killing him, but dies when the Wolf falls. Thor battles giants until he reaches the ocean, where Jormungandr rises from the waves and ensnares the Thunder God. Thor is bitten several times but manages to slay the serpent with one mighty blow. He takes nine steps from the serpent's body and then falls dead, slain by its poisonous bite. After all of this, the worlds end and everything starts over.

I might have some details wrong, but I what I really want to know is what happens to the rest of the gods. I've never read anything that mentions Loki's fate, or Idun, or Freya, or even Frigg. Anyone here happen to know the rest of the story? It's driving me crazy not knowing how it all ended.

Cheers and thanks in advance.

From a search, I got that Loki and Heimdall kill eachother.

I looked at three different sites, but I can't find anything for the other three. Sorry.

Edit: I think they all die, but I'm not sure about the details of their deaths.

*runs to look up Heimdall*

Well, I guess that's better than Loki being stuck in a mask, if you get the reference.

Thanks for that bit of info!

You are missing quite a few details actually. The biggest thing you are missing is Surtr, King of Muspelheim and of the Fire Giants. During Ragnarok, Surtr fights and slays Freyr, and then sets fire to the whole world, burning everything left in existence to ashes.

At the end of Ragnarok, with all of the gods dead, the only things that remains in the world are the World Tree, Yggdrasil, and a pair of humans who sought shelter in Yggdrasil's branches. From there, the world is reborn in the wake of near-total annihilation. The gods too are reborn in the new world.

Of course, there are plenty of different versions of the story of Ragnarok.

According to some Vidar, Vali, Magni, and Modi will survive. Additionaly, Balder and Hod will come back from the land of the dead.

According to some starving machinist in detroit Vidar, Vali, Magni, and Modi will survive. Additionaly, Balder and Hod will come back from the land of the dead.

This, yes. Not just according to that machinist. Norse texts back this up. Balder coming back from the dead is actually pretty key to the whole thing; he is the legitimate heir to Odin and takes over as ruler of the gods, the humans repopulating the world as a kind of paradise.

They sit at the feet of Balder and reminisce about the world before Ragnarok and learn from his stories and stuff.

Bah. That machinist part was something copied from another discussion and accidentally pasted into my post. I thought I had removed it in time!
