| #1rakeJun 04, 2009 8:08:32 | I hereby demand that Toasted_Amphibian run a play-by-post game for us. We have a fairly large, fairly intelligent group of regulars who frequent the boards daily, and we're all a bunch of elitists anyway. So screw everybody else, let's run our own 3.5 play-by-post. I have my character ready and everything... e.e |
| #2boj0Jun 04, 2009 8:35:51 | Seconded |
| #3The-Mage-KingJun 04, 2009 8:42:13 | Thirded, with much Overkill. |
| #4rakeJun 04, 2009 9:21:27 | Oh this is so going to happen. Do it, T_A. *squints* Do ittt. |
| #5rakeJun 04, 2009 11:04:54 | You can't hide forever, Amphibian. Hey, b0j0 and Mage_King, what are you gonna play? I've got a halfling bard build that can grant everyone a +4 bonus to hit and damage with bardsong from level 3. |
| #6The-Mage-KingJun 04, 2009 11:09:44 | Evoker Variant with a Druid's animal companion. Lotsa firepower, plus a minion. Either that or a heavily optimized Elf Swashbuckler/Elf Paragon with the Abberant feats that will give him wings. At first level. |
| #7The-Mage-KingJun 04, 2009 11:13:37 | But there is always the summoner Cleric build I have sitting around... |
| #8rakeJun 04, 2009 11:15:01 | Evoker Variant with a Druid's animal companion. Lotsa firepower, plus a minion. Either that or a heavily optimized Elf Swashbuckler/Elf Paragon with the Abberant feats that will give him wings. At first level. Sounds like the elf or the cleric would benefit best from the +4/+4 bardsong. Can an animal companion benefit from bardsong? I seem to recall having Int 3 as a prerequisite, but I don't see it in the SRD. |
| #9The-Mage-KingJun 04, 2009 11:19:16 | The wizard would also be an elf... I think the Swashbuckler is the one I'll play. Or I could use my Knight build... He can fly at level 1 too... And will be able to ride a... Hydra. |
| #10rakeJun 04, 2009 14:08:56 | Technically, anyone with a friendly hydra and ranks in Ride can ride a hydra. : P |
| #11toastedamphibianJun 04, 2009 15:54:30 | ..... I wasn't aware I had such a following. It's not my fault that none of you come to play in the Free Traders League. :P [What kind of game you want?] |
| #12owls_and_more_owlsJun 04, 2009 20:41:22 | Yesssss... *hisses like snake* I want in. |
| #13NovacatJun 04, 2009 21:05:39 | I'll only play if I can be a Nova Cat. (It's like a cat, but with more nova.) |
| #14toastedamphibianJun 04, 2009 22:27:36 | You can be a displacer beast for all I care cheif. |
| #15EscherEnigmaJun 04, 2009 22:40:56 | TA running a game of monsters? too bad that nixes most casters... |
| #16toastedamphibianJun 04, 2009 22:44:12 | TA running a game of monsters? too bad that nixes most casters... If everyone wants to play a monster game, I'll probably offer some free group wide LA reduction. Would give martial types a bit more though. Actually gives them a chance to shine with the casters. [No TOB though] |
| #17pigknightJun 04, 2009 23:44:50 | Paladin Boar! |
| #18toastedamphibianJun 05, 2009 0:00:26 | Awakened Boar or Anthromorph Boar? |
| #19pigknightJun 05, 2009 0:28:25 | Can I enchant my tusks? |
| #20owls_and_more_owlsJun 05, 2009 0:40:02 | I want to play an Awakened Living Wish Spell. |
| #21DralenanJun 05, 2009 1:15:00 | I want to be a dire lemur sorcerer. |
| #22toastedamphibianJun 05, 2009 3:07:30 | Can I enchant my tusks? Only if your a Kensai. |
| #23toastedamphibianJun 05, 2009 3:08:32 | I want to be a dire lemur sorcerer. I don't have stats for a dire lemur. I could apply a dire template to a monkey though and call it a dire lemur. Should be close enough. |
| #24cherubaddonJun 05, 2009 3:09:20 | I'll have to think about it... but a telepath brain in a jar might be cool. |
| #25toastedamphibianJun 05, 2009 3:12:48 | I'll have to think about it... but a telepath brain in a jar might be cool. Are there stats for that somehwere? Otherwise we would have to designe some kind of construct for that. What if we forgo the jar? Edit: Found it! http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/unbodied.htm ![]() |
| #26cherubaddonJun 05, 2009 3:24:38 | Haha yeah, I could go for using that. But there are actual stats for a Brain in a Jar in Libris Mortis. |
| #27toastedamphibianJun 05, 2009 3:32:18 | Hmmm, it would take some work to update it. Unbodied looks better anyways, especially if your planning on going psion(telepath) |
| #28rakeJun 05, 2009 7:40:55 | Omg, stay on-topi...c... ... ...what have I wrought? Seriously, though, let's keep it simple for the first game at least? : P How many players are you looking to run for, T_A? |
| #29EscherEnigmaJun 05, 2009 10:05:54 | Seriously, though, let's keep it simple for the first game at least? : P Why? |
| #30zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 10:08:10 | Why? Not that I'll be able to play, but ... this ^^. The beauty of 3.5 is the nigh overwhelming complexity of the beast. Use it. Love it. :D |
| #31EscherEnigmaJun 05, 2009 10:18:50 | Now, I just need to find a way to make an ivory tower (complete with a 12 foot wall surrounding it's courtyard) walk with my ivory tower elitist. And I keep coming back to Baba Yaga for some reason. I mean, sure, the chances of having an ivory tower on hand actually being useful is pretty darn negligible (unless someone is slow moving enough that it can step on them) but wouldn't it be awesome? ... On another note, I just realized that if I was in a fairy tale, Rapunzel would be the only woman for me. I'd climb up her hair, she would get all excited at seeing a man, and I would say "Wow, nice place you got here. Now, see, I have this pointy piece of metal, so you're going to leave you hair and get out." |
| #32zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 10:25:33 | You could always use a Daern's (sp?) Instant Fortress - with some small reflavoring. It won't walk, but it is a portable tower. Oh, it also does 10d10 damage to anything in its area when you choose to toss it down and expand it. ;) |
| #33EscherEnigmaJun 05, 2009 10:29:16 | Doesn't that, by default, not shrink back down? |
| #34cherubaddonJun 05, 2009 10:43:12 | Yeah it does, as long as it's empty. |
| #35EscherEnigmaJun 05, 2009 10:49:31 | Oh, neat. Then my ivory tower elitist just has to keep a few "ivory tower stone wall"1 spells prepared. --- 1Like a regular stone wall, except the wall is white washed and looks elegant. And people looking it at it get a vague feeling of condescending dismissal. |
| #36zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 11:38:20 | I always wanted to haev a character that used one - both for defense during those pesky camp times and as offense just for grins. Never got around to doing it, though. What a shame. |
| #37zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 11:41:36 | If you're really interested in it, EE, here's the write-up from the SRD (without Daern mentioned, of course - silly IP stuff ;)): Instant Fortress Instant Fortress This metal cube is small, but when activated by speaking a command word it grows to form a tower 20 feet square and 30 feet high, with arrow slits on all sides and a crenellated battlement atop it. The metal walls extend 10 feet into the ground, rooting it to the spot and preventing it from being tipped over. The fortress has a small door that opens only at the command of the owner of the fortress—even knock spells can’t open the door. The adamantine walls of instant fortress have 100 hit points and hardness 20. The fortress cannot be repaired except by a wish or a miracle, which restores 50 points of damage taken. The fortress springs up in just 1 round, with the door facing the device’s owner. The door opens and closes instantly at his command. People and creatures nearby (except the owner) must be careful not to be caught by the fortress’s sudden growth. Anyone so caught takes 10d10 points of damage (Reflex DC 19 half). The fortress is deactivated by speaking a command word (different from the one used to activate it). It cannot be deactivated unless it is empty. Strong conjuration; CL 13th; Craft Wondrous Item, mage’s magnificent mansion; Price 55,000 gp |
| #38dirtyfrankJun 05, 2009 11:47:41 | So it's like a huge weapon? |
| #39EscherEnigmaJun 05, 2009 11:51:56 | Eh, at the level where it's within an adventurer's price range to have one, 10d10 isn't too alarming. Nothing to sneer at, mind you, but it's certainly not an "I Win" button. |
| #40zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 11:56:11 | Yeah, you likely won't kill anything with it (Ref DC 19 :rolleyes , but it's all sorts of cool. Imagine taking first watch not next to the ashes of a campfire but from the protected roof of a tower. And, instead of sleeping out in the snowy cold, how about sleeping inside a protected tower? :D I always wanted to pop one out on the first round of a combat, get inside and then fight from there. Hopefully I'd do some damage putting it up in the first place, too. Really, it's just sort of a fun flavory kind of item. It's a shame I was always after the next sword or armor enhancement. :D I could have had a ton of fun with one o' these. |
| #41dirtyfrankJun 05, 2009 12:01:25 | Will if you think about it. It does 10d10 damage to everything within a 20'x20' area. It didn't specify so it either then is on top of anything in that area or it just pushes them to the edge. So now it can be used to put a 20'x20' obstacle between you and your enemy. The door is also right next to the tower's owner so they could just walk in and they're now protected by the thing that just dished out damage. It seems like a nifty weapon to me. Heck, I could just have it grow and then shrink it again. Just keep using until the enemy is dead. It's a good AeO attack in the wizard is low on spells or needs to conserve them. |
| #42zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 12:04:28 | I kinda wanted to do the same thing. I mean, take a melee guy in 3.5 that can't do jack to areas himself. Give 'im a tower an' *bang* he's got an AoE attack. Hell, it could even be used as a trap so long as someone was watching for when the bad guys got within the area. I love items like this. So many uses beyond the obvious. |
| #43dirtyfrankJun 05, 2009 12:07:22 | What if it was opened on the tree canopy or something? It would like open up then fall because of its weight. It should crush anything under it unless its huge in size. Even then that should be a lot of damage for having an object that is 20'x20'x30' fall on ya. You could fly and activate it in the air or something and bomb people with it. |
| #44zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 12:09:26 | Yep. Magic Carpet + Fortress = Mayhem! So many possibilities. :D |
| #45EscherEnigmaJun 05, 2009 12:17:20 | But... I just wanted an ivory tower I could take with me. Now you're going and findin' uses for the thing, many of which would probably damage my tower... |
| #46zombie_babiesJun 05, 2009 12:20:15 | You don't have to use it if you don't want to, you know. In fact, it would be better for your image to know the full potential of the thing but refuse to explore it out of contemptuous pity for the imbecilic masses you lord it over. :D |
| #47toastedamphibianJun 05, 2009 14:47:09 | I probably dont want to run for more than 4-5 players, but its up to you guys. I just do as commanded. |
| #48Dark_StrykeJun 05, 2009 22:13:11 | I'll have to think about it... but a telepath brain in a jar might be cool. I once had a player who played a brain in a jar. Wizard, I think. His brother (IRL) played an awakened monkey rogue with a cutlass who carried the brain everywhere. ...That was a weird campaign. |
| #49toastedamphibianJun 07, 2009 6:22:30 | Heh. I guess everyone changed their mind? |
| #50EscherEnigmaJun 07, 2009 12:11:09 | Heh. I guess everyone changed their mind? Muzzah? Did you post a recruitment post somewhere when I wasn't looking? |
| #51toastedamphibianJun 07, 2009 17:07:01 | Muzzah? Did you post a recruitment post somewhere when I wasn't looking? No, but everyone stoped talking before decideing what kind of game they want me to run. |
| #52EscherEnigmaJun 07, 2009 17:59:05 | Ah. I know the plight. "Hey, GM, we want to play!" "Well, what kind of game do you want?" "I dunno, just a game!" "... o...k? Do you want a classic high fantasy, mystical intrigue, a game focusing around competitive basket weaving?" "Oh, that sounds neat!" "... you want a high fantasy game focusing on the mystical intrigues surrounding competetive basket weaving?" "... that too!" "... I hate you guys." |
| #53DralenanJun 07, 2009 18:02:37 | I want a game where adventure reigns supreme and lemurs are hunted on sight. |
| #54toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 0:19:45 | You mean Lemurs, Lemures, or both? |
| #55DralenanJun 08, 2009 0:48:45 | Lemurs. Lemures would be considered a contribution to society. |
| #56boj0Jun 08, 2009 8:16:40 | Awakened Wolf rogue... and yeah if we do this I'm good mon-thu in the morning from 8 am - 1230 pm |
| #57rakeJun 08, 2009 10:17:02 | Right, so, let's focus! First of all, T_A said about 4 or 5 players right? For an online game, I'm all for a smaller party, but five isn't too bad (and T_A is a bit of a "Killer GM"). I get an automatic "in" on account of it being my idea. Mage and b0j0 have officially thrown down the gauntlet, too. Who else is on board, and what style of campaign do we prefer? My vote for campaign style would be some 'traditional tabletop' (I'm long-time 3.5'er, but a first-time Play-By-Poster). I'm down for whatever, though (although I do prefer characters I can relate to, rather than wacky-assed monster races or makes-no-sense templated abominations). Any serious player candidates out there, let's hear from you and get this party started. : P |
| #58zombie_babiesJun 08, 2009 10:21:20 | Well, if it were like level 25 or so I could finally run my Elan Telepath/Thrallherd/Unbodied concept. :P |
| #59EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 10:49:33 | although I do prefer characters I can relate to, rather than wacky-assed monster races or makes-no-sense templated abominations. If you can't "relate to" a sentient and all-powerful pile of ooze on it's way to immortality, I'm not sure I can take you seriously as a D&D player anymore. |
| #60cherubaddonJun 08, 2009 10:53:13 | I would join as well, maybe with a Dragonborn. I'm not too biased as far as the type of game goes, but I think exploration and/or travelling would be cool. |
| #61rakeJun 08, 2009 11:31:40 | Sounds like two votes for classic/exploration style, and four (?) serious player candidates (I count Cherubaddon, Mage_King, b0j0, and myself)? I feel like I'm missing someone though. T_A, do you want to make a recruitment thread or something, if only to talk about campaign type? |
| #62boj0Jun 08, 2009 11:53:46 | Okay if we need ideas for campaigns, a personal favorite of mine has been mid-fantasy (like high fantasy, but with less verboise discriptions and magic items that do not have 500+ years of written history) similar in the vein of Dragonlance or Eberron. Also, if animals are not okay then I choose human rogue. So, now T_A just needs to decide campaign rules, starting level, and banned/restricted lists (I need to know what cheese is not allowed :D ) |
| #63rakeJun 08, 2009 12:49:48 | I like to start at 3rd level, only because there's not a lot of heroics to be had at first level (and because there are about a hundred times the number of builds available at third than at first). |
| #64jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 08, 2009 14:05:15 | I'd like to join. I'd prefer a noncaster, but I'm fine with any role. Also, I agree with rake, level 3 is a good level to start. |
| #65toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 14:57:55 | ..... Is anyone else getting a "Homeward Bound" vibe here? ![]() |
| #66EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 15:01:37 | ... on another note, I just imagined a "d20 Bunnies and Burrows" game. Why do you do these things to me, TA? Why? |
| #67toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 15:08:26 | Awakened Wolf rogue... ..... I think you mean Blink Dog Rogue |
| #68toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 15:10:31 | I'd like to join. I'd prefer a noncaster, but I'm fine with any role. Also, I agree with rake, level 3 is a good level to start. I don't like casters much myself. If I do the suddenly sentient critters stuck in the wild, it will probably be in a magic deadzone. [Thinking a wild magic calamity is a good reason for the existence of you werid critters.] |
| #69EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 15:28:45 | I don't like casters much myself. If I do the suddenly sentient critters stuck in the wild, it will probably be in a magic deadzone. [Thinking a wild magic calamity is a good reason for the existence of you werid critters.] So... no ivory tower elitist? /woe is me |
| #70DralenanJun 08, 2009 16:26:20 | I'm still interested (especially if we stick with the monster/animal game). But I can't always predict my schedule, other than that I work weekdays until around 3 PM, so I wouldn't be able to check on posts during the mornings. If we are doing a monster/or animal campaign, I still want to be a sentient dire lemur (stats as a monkey). If not, a kenku would work. Sorcerer or warlock either way. |
| #71jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 08, 2009 16:51:06 | I'm available on and off all day most days, aside from Friday evenings, when I have my regular D&D game. I'll see what everyone else wants to play, but I might be an anthropomorphic or awakened snapping turtle (From Stormwrack), probably as a monk or druid. |
| #72toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 18:31:24 | So... no ivory tower elitist? Let me rephrase. I don't like Primary casters. Wizards, Clerics, Sorcerers, Druids, Psions: They all leave a bad taste in my mouth. Warlocks, Favored Souls, Duskblades, Warminds, ect are all great. If your set on a primary caster, I can find a way to make it work as long as you dont overshadow everyone later on. |
| #73EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 18:38:21 | Eh. The practicality of the ivory tower elitist entirely depends on the level and tone of the game. If you're going for an awakened animal eco-terrorist brigade trying to stop the evil loggers in order to save their fairy friends, then... well, first I'll ask why you added awakened animals to Ferngully, but second I'll point out that an ivory tower elitist just isn't appropriate for that type of game. So, to make a long story short ("too late", I know) what's your opinion of artificers, and would it be suitable for whatever weird ideas you're playing with? |
| #74toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 18:42:11 | If the game goes "ferngully" or "godzilla" is realy dependent upon the alignment of the awakened animals and their sizes I'd say. I need to read up on Artificers, I'm not very familiar with them. Awakened Snapping turtle might not be a great idea. Land speed of 5 is a little prohibitive, unless you can convince someone to cary you, probably in their mouth or something, untill battle starts. |
| #75EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 18:49:01 | Either way, I think I'm up for a weird and wacky game. I'll think about an actual character more once we have a premise to work from. No point in thinking up a cunning artificer field mouse if you're going to go with the "magical dead zone" idea. |
| #76jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 08, 2009 18:59:57 | Awakened Snapping turtle might not be a great idea. Land speed of 5 is a little prohibitive, unless you can convince someone to cary you, probably in their mouth or something, untill battle starts. Good point, I might be a baboon or an ape barbarian, I'll need to see what the difference is... |
| #77NovacatJun 08, 2009 19:07:48 | I still have dibbs on being a Nova Cat. |
| #78toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 19:17:44 | How do these look to you guys: BoJ0 Blink Dog Abilites: +6 dex, +2 Wis Speed: 40ft +3 NA 4d10 Racial HD, [Full BAB, Good Fort save, 2+Int skillpoints per level] Favored Class: Fighter Track as a bonus feat Bite Attack 1d6 Advancment: 5-7 HD (Medium); 8-12 HD (Large) or by character class Blink (Su) A blink dog can use blink as the spell (caster level 8th), and can evoke or end the effect as a free action. | #79toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 19:23:37 | I still have dibbs on being a Nova Cat. Only 'Nova Cat' I can find is apparently some clan in a game called battletech. If your just being funny, let me know. If you actually want to play soemthign called a 'Nova Cat' give me some more details about what it is and I'll try and work somethign out. |
| #80EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 19:40:03 | Question 1: Would an artificer be a suitable fit to the game you have in mind? Keeping in mind that to really be effective artificers do require the ability to make magic items, so if it's a constant race against time with no pauses for crafting, the answer to this question is "no". Question 2: If the answer to question 1 is "yes", field mouse artificer? Other then that, it's back to the drawing board for me. Which is ok, as it gives me an excuse to look up different animals on google image search and make a quick sketch. |
| #81jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 08, 2009 19:44:53 | Sure, that looks good. Any idea what we'll do for attribute generation? I'm assuming point buy... |
| #82toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 20:16:13 | Lets do Elite Array. |
| #83toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 20:21:28 | Question 1: Would an artificer be a suitable fit to the game you have in mind? Keeping in mind that to really be effective artificers do require the ability to make magic items, so if it's a constant race against time with no pauses for crafting, the answer to this question is "no". .... Like thoes mice that make dresses and stuff in that disney princess movie whos name I am intentionally avoiding typing because I can't figure out how to spell it? That sounds cool I guess. Like I said, the speed of the game, and it's goals, I'm going to leave up to your guys in game characters. I think I'm going to describe a largescale battle, as witnessed by you all in your natural forms, culminating in some giant calamity. Then you will all wake up to a ravaged and cold battlefield fundamentally changed, with nothign but eachoter for company. Where you go from there is totally up to you. [Just don't die, as I won't be replacing or adding characters.] Sort of an "In the Day of the Life of an Abberant Freak" campagine. |
| #84EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 20:35:36 | Eh, I probalby shouldn't have specified "field mouse", as I don't actually care about the type, just the concept of this little tiny mouse working on being a crafter of magic items sounds incredibly amusing to me. Of course, there is the whole question of "how does it actually use/make any magic items? It has no opposable thumb! It's wand is bigger then it!" But if you're cool with the concept then details can be worked out. |
| #85NovacatJun 08, 2009 20:42:40 | Only 'Nova Cat' I can find is apparently some clan in a game called battletech. If your just being funny, let me know. If you actually want to play soemthign called a 'Nova Cat' give me some more details about what it is and I'll try and work somethign out. A Nova Cat is like a cat, but with more nova. (I'm being anything but serious.) |
| #86toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 20:50:17 | A Nova Cat is like a cat, but with more nova. Carefull or I'll stat you up as a cat sized displacer beast. |
| #87toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 21:02:54 | Eh, I probalby shouldn't have specified "field mouse", as I don't actually care about the type, just the concept of this little tiny mouse working on being a crafter of magic items sounds incredibly amusing to me. Of course, there is the whole question of "how does it actually use/make any magic items? It has no opposable thumb! It's wand is bigger then it!" You could make the items, I don't have a problem with that*. You might not be able to move them, and you and your compatriots would only be able to use items as appropriate for your body type. Mr. Turtle has standard. Mr. Wolf Rogue can use boots gloves barding and neck. Also barding should he so choose. As for wands, you would not be able to use them with your hands. I belive there is a type of masterwork weapon addition that lets you wield them in your mouth. You could make one to be able to weild a wand in your mouth I suppose. *I can see you scurrying around the forest draggin little bits and pieces of magic components into your rat nest. |
| #88EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 21:35:30 | Hrm... ok, I think I'm actually excited about this idea. So how should I go about statting it up? You said elite array, but what level, and what stats should I use for a mouse? As far as I know the closest that the MM has is a rat... |
| #89toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 22:02:11 | How does this look? Enchanted Mouse Size: Diminutive Type: Magical Beast Str -10 Dex +6 Con -4 Int +4 Wis +2 Cha +2 Lowlight Vision, Scent 30ft Speed: 5ft Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat All Fours (EX): As an Immediate action, an Enchanted mouse can drop to the ground and stand on four feet. An Enchanted Mouse must have both of its hands empty prior to using this ability and may not use its hands untill it stands up again (A move action that provokes AoO). When on all fours an Enchanted Mouse appears in all ways to be a normal mouse and gains a +30 racial modifier to disguise checks to appear as such. He also gains walk, climb, and swim speeds of 20ft per round. Favored Class: Artificer Substitution Levels: Level 1: Enchanted Mice cannot write, and do not gain the scribe scroll feat. However, their enchanted nature makes them natural item crafters. They recieve double the normal number of craft reserve points each level. Level 4: Enchanted Mice do no recieve the ability to craft Homoculi at 4th level, instead gaining the Scavanger ability. Scavenger (SU) An Enchanted Mouse has a uniquie ability to find alternate sources of material for new items from the environment around it. At a rate of one day for each 1000gp an Enchanted Mouse may convert any item it is capable of destroying into material components for any craft feat or skill equal to its full market value. Any items made with such materials have a very peicemeal look and feel to them. While they function normally, they seem shabby. Any such items sell for 1/4 their actual market value, if they can be sold at all. |
| #90EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 22:35:55 | Woot, my own magic race! I'll treasure and hold it forever. |
| #91toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 22:46:00 | (I would recomend mouse colored gloves of storing.) |
| #92EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 22:48:36 | I would too. Out of curiosity, what level are you aiming for with this? |
| #93toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 22:50:56 | I figured level 6 ish. Lets everyone acount for their racial HD and get a few class levels mabey. I need to sit down and and figure out the balancing issues to try and make sure you are all aproximatly equaly competent. LA/HD will be added or subtracted to compensate. |
| #94EscherEnigmaJun 08, 2009 22:58:08 | M'kay then. Later tonight I'll try to do a quick write up of [smallcaps]The Mouse[/smallcaps] at lvl 6. Are we running with no gold or equipment? That sounds about right based on the set-up, and a GM can balance for that easily enough at that level. |
| #95toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 23:03:36 | Correct. Given the groups... 'unique' anatomy, shoping won't really be much of an option. Mostly mr. magic mouse will be the primary source of any items the group has. |
| #96jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 08, 2009 23:15:41 | I'm thinking of changing from a monk to a barbarian focusing on unarmed attacks. I think it will be more like what I'm picturing in my head. |
| #97toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 23:18:31 | Interesting. Not alot of damage bonuses to be had there however. Improved Natural attack, racial bonus, monk's belt if escher makes you one.... thats about it. [And fist of the forest, of course.] |
| #98jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 08, 2009 23:40:41 | That's true... and I guess with +6 CON he'll still be pretty tough. Also, does the d8 damage from his bite factor in the effective size increase for natural attacks? |
| #99toastedamphibianJun 08, 2009 23:52:16 | Yes. |
| #100The-Mage-KingJun 09, 2009 7:35:19 | I guess I'll stat the winged Swashbuckler of Doom, using flaws, traits, and Abberant feats... You have no idea what sort of optimizing I can do with an elf... Then, of course, I'll turn him into a Rust Monster, just for the sheer irony (bad pun intended) of it... |
| #101rakeJun 09, 2009 8:20:33 | So you're houseruling a lot of awakened-animal style races to do a 'Homeward Bound' campaign? : / In the immortal words of Token: *claps hands together once* "I'm out." : P On the other hand, this thread just got about twice as interesting to watch... |
| #102boj0Jun 09, 2009 10:25:06 | So you're houseruling a lot of awakened-animal style races to do a 'Homeward Bound' campaign? gahwAAAAAHHHH? Rake, wasn't this your evil plan? Oh and T_A, the Blink Dog looks good as long as I don't get pidgeon-holed into Lawful Good alignment |
| #103rakeJun 09, 2009 10:31:12 | gahwAAAAAHHHH? It was, 'cause as a DM I don't often get a chance to play in any games, but given the, ah, direction the campaign is looking to take, I just can't see myself becoming interested. These aren't the types of characters I like to play or the types of stories I can contribute to. Besides, houseruled races and classes make me cringe. No worries... hopefully I'll catch the next game! |
| #104toastedamphibianJun 09, 2009 14:44:04 | Oh yah. Balance seems very unlikly. It's not my fault noone wants to play normal races (Bastards). But like I said, if you want to go a diffrent direction, pitch it and see if it gains any traction. Personally I'm much more comfortable using creatures that actually have listed LA but noone seems to want to cooperate with that. (Aside from BoJ0 and the blink dog.) |
| #105toastedamphibianJun 09, 2009 14:45:07 | I guess I'll stat the winged Swashbuckler of Doom, using flaws, traits, and Abberant feats... You have no idea what sort of optimizing I can do with an elf... No traits, no flaws. If things keep going down the current path, however, a rust monster would not be out of line. |
| #106jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 09, 2009 16:09:01 | I'm fine with using the animal characters or just playing a standard race. |
| #107pigknightJun 09, 2009 23:18:40 | Can I be a anthropig that uses dwarf stats? |
| #108toastedamphibianJun 16, 2009 17:40:13 | I'm not seeing alot of character sheets...... |
| #109toastedamphibianJun 16, 2009 17:42:42 | No. But you may be a wearbore with no humanoid form. [Escher is basically a Wererat with no humanoid form....] |
| #110EscherEnigmaJun 16, 2009 17:52:43 | D'oh. I knew I forgot something. But unfortunately I have no books at work, and I think I might be raiding tonight (it's not really my thing, but my SO's guild needs healers, but I never know what's being planned), but I'll definitely have time tomorrow morning. Sorry about the delay. |

(Hopefully I'm doing a good job, If not PLEASE let me know, and I'll hear out your arguments. At the moment, assume none of the races have level adjustments unless I specifically say otherwise. Your base stats might change later if I feel tweeaks are requiered to keep everything fun and fair, including possible changes to LA. |

| #123toastedamphibianJun 16, 2009 19:45:46 | Yes, you may multiclass. However, if you dont have a favored class listed, you dont have a favored class. (Aside from your racial HD, which are always favored.) |
| #124pigknightJun 16, 2009 19:47:58 | Hmm... Can I go ftr 3/clr 3 or do my racial HD take away lvls? |
| #125toastedamphibianJun 16, 2009 19:53:33 | Hmm... We are starting at ECL 6. Add a monster’s level adjustment to its Hit Dice and class levels to get the creature’s effective character level, or ECL. Effectively, monsters with a level adjustment become multiclass character when they take class levels. A creature’s “monster class” is always a favored class, and the creature never takes XP penalties for having it. |

Also, I like that template EE, I'll try it for my character. Edit: Okay, I'm obviously not reading something right. In the SRDssize increase section it has a table, and I don't quite follow it... Does it mean when I become large I gain: +4 STR, -2 DEX, +2 CON, +2 Natural armour and -1 on all attacks? I haven't really done a character with HD instead of class levels before. |

| #133toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 14:56:47 | Are there any particular books that are or aren't allowed? I'm thinking of taking the dash (Complete Warrior) just to round out my speed to 20, since I'm going to take HD so that I can be large size, and won't get my monk speed boost until later. No, your reading the wrong section. (The "Going from small to medium" section). Move down a line. I might need to add a level or 2 onto your advancement level, you get some hefty beefs. I need to see how it compares to what Piggy snaggs from his levels and such. |
| #134toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 15:03:44 | @EE: No scrolls. You can make wands, tokens, whatever (With the proper feats, of course.) Just not scrolls. |
| #135toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 15:08:24 | Name: Blitz Don't forget your class levels. (You get 2.) |
| #136EscherEnigmaJun 17, 2009 15:12:44 | @EE: No scrolls. You can make wands, tokens, whatever (With the proper feats, of course.) Just not scrolls. Hrm... if I remember correctly, in one of the books (Complete Arcane or Complete Mage, I think) they mentioned the idea of alternate "brew potion" type feats... magical clay tablets, specially crafted candles, that sort of thing. Now that I think about it, would it be appropriate for me to take an "alternate" to "scrolls" and "potions" that fit better to the theme/mood, but are mechanically the same? |
| #137toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 15:20:13 | The problem is that, with your casting reserve and ability to get components from damn near anything, at any time, it would be a trivial mater for you to make a vast array of scrolls, thus having access to any spell at any time allowing you to basically do whatever you want and step on the toes of the party. Wands are more economical per casting, but have a higher upfront cost. Being able to cast the same spell alot of times isnt a problem, having access to 50 diffrent spells that you can cast at the drop of a hat is what makes batmans. Edit: In other words, the fact that scrolls are too good to pass on is the reason I won't let you have them. :} Oh, and your only partially illiterate. You can read. You just can't write. Enchanted mice suffer from terrible dysgraphia and attrocious penmanship. |
| #138EscherEnigmaJun 17, 2009 15:24:22 | Ah. Ok. I thought you were objecting to the idea of a mouse writing a scroll, but it's to the artificer's ability to scribe any spell. Ok then. I'll fix that later, at work now where I'm away from my dead-tree copy of Eberron. Too bad I have to wait another level to get craft wand. |
| #139toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 15:28:21 | I do however like the idea of a mouse, on all fours, pushing a scroll open with its head before rearing up on its back feat and wiggling its little fingers. So keep in mind, you can use scrolls, you just cant make them. |
| #140jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 17, 2009 18:22:56 | No, your reading the wrong section. (The "Going from small to medium" section). Move down a line. I might need to add a level or 2 onto your advancement level, you get some hefty beefs. I need to see how it compares to what Piggy snaggs from his levels and such. Okay, I'll wait until you decide to keep working on the parts that that will affect. |
| #141toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 18:44:14 | Okay, I'll wait until you decide to keep working on the parts that that will affect. I changed it so you would be large sized at 6 hit dice. That amounts to 8 strenght over 8 levels, same as a warhulk would get (Except you get BAB as well, of course.) Hopefully this wont prove too powerfull. Bascially, if you put your 15 in str, your +1 from hd and your racial modifier + size increase will put you at 30 strength. Your bite would be +15 for 2d6+16 damage (I think.) I think that puts you pretty well even with BoJo when you account for his constant Blink and at will teleportation abilites. (Blink means all attacks have a 50% chance to miss him, and all his hits count as coming from an invisible creatre.) I need to look more carefully at pigknights character as I think it might be somewhat weaker than Mr. Turtle. Escher will probably never be a combat machine, but is setup to be an excellent scout and party leader. Owls.... I don't know. I think Owlwyrm is going to be quite weak starting out, but probably very strong at later levels. I'll have to watch him carefully to see if any further changes are needed. |

| #146jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 17, 2009 19:07:56 | Okay. Oh, and you never answered my question, can I take Dash from Complete Warrior? And are there any books banned? |
| #147toastedamphibianJun 17, 2009 19:25:26 | Only WoTC books, no ToB. Aside from that, most things should be fine. Anything in the complete series/PHBII/SRD I don't have a problem with. If you want something from another book, ask me and i'll check it out. |
| #148jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 17, 2009 20:14:57 | Okay, thanks. |

| #154jamfalcon_the_gnomeJun 20, 2009 19:06:54 | I think I'm going to need to drop out of the game, I don't really have the time even to make my character. |
