Last one for today, I promise.

For the purposes of this match, Samus is fully equipped a la, Metroid Prime, plus Zero Suit underneath a la SSB. Iron Man is geared up to current comic book standards, including the nano-armor. Does Samus have a chance? Iron Man is about as tough as they come.

...does a weakness for blondes factor in anywhere?

No gunship for Samus and no tech for Tony outside of whatever comes with the suit. Combatants fight in a neutral area with variable terrain and high ground. An abandoned pirate frigate, or a rooftop brawl at Stark Tower.

And go!

I dunno about Iron Man, but I bet he doesn't have something a la Zero Laser up his sleeve. It kinda depends which Metroid Prime we're talking about here. Or do you mean all three four games?

First game, all toys unlocked (plus Zero Laser and anything else SSB Samus can do). And Iron Man is a ridiculous opponent, by the way. I think Iron Man could probably take a hit from Supes.

Taking a hit from Supes is no big deal anymore. (Though he may be attracted when he learns how Samus has a tendency to leave planets behind destroyed, if you get my meaning.)

Iron Man.

Can Samus even fly? I haven't played any of the newer metroid games, but she never could in the old ones.

I think flying is the big difference maker here. Iron Man just flys around out of Samus' range until she loses sight of him. Then he zooms in, blasts her and flys off again.

Repeat

Iron Man. His suit lets him fly. Samus' doesn't. It lets her jump really freaking high, but that's it. As Ixien said, flyby, blast, fly off, repeat.

Samus can jump realllly high, can bomb-jump, and can return fire (her weapons are very long-range). This tactic is kind of douchey, though, and If Iron Man actually tried this, I think Samus could Morph Ball into a hole somewhere and wait out the BS fly-and-die tactic. Iron Man might be able to pick her up with a sensory array, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Varia Suit could evade detection. Chozo tech is practically pseudomagical, and highly alien.

EDIT: Oh, and never-saw-it-coming grappling energy-line on the fly-by puts Samus on Iron Man's back mid flight.

The problem is, the actual range of Samus' weaponry is not really known. As far as seen, it may as well have unlimited range, so the only way for Iron Man to "get out of range" would be to hide or get out of this universe. (In the latter option, if that is possible with his suit, I'd rule he'd lose anyways.)

hmmm, maybe I don't know enough about either Iron Man or Samus to really weigh in on this one. Like I said, haven't played any of the newer Metroid games and Iron Man was never my favorite comic book.

But, my gut still says Iron Man. You got two people in crazy power suits. One can fly, one can't. I just can't see the ground bound power suit winning. YMMV

Y'know, I just realized another important factor: where would the fight be? Iron Man's suit has a problem with freezing up, something Samus has no problem with at all. Also, she has the Ice Beam.

I assume some neutral zone, such as a ruined pirate frigate. I think Tony's armor is pretty weakness-free by this point, though. He demonstrates no such weakness in the comics that I know of. Good catch, though.

EDIT: Weakness or not, the ice beam still might freeze him solid. I mean, that's what it does.

he fixed that problem though, remember?

If you're going by the movie version Iron Man, yeah, he fixed the problem of his suit icing up in supremely cold temperatures. However, he's never had a beam of pure coldness shot directly into his gut before. How cold is the Ice Beam, anyway? For the sake of fairness, let's assume Samus can't freeze Iron Man with the ice beam, otherwise it just takes one mess up from him to be turned into a statue (keep in mind Samus seems to have infinite ammo, so if she Ice Beam spams him, he's bound to screw up eventually).

As for Samus not being able to fly, with the space jump/screw attack from the earlier games, she can continue to jump indefinitely without landing. With the screw attack, she actually damages everything she touches, so Iron Man couldn't just punch her out of the sky or anything. I'm not sure whether the screw attack stops missile weapons or not. Call this one a wash.

Iron Man has bullets and missiles and all that fun stuff, but Samus has frikkin' lazerbeams, as well as missiles, and bombs. I can't see the morph ball being used offensively in this situation, so it can pretty much be discounted. Both of them have extremely resilient power suits that can survive in incredibly harsh climates and take amazing amounts of punishment.

On the surface, it actually looks like a pretty even match. Sure, Iron Man can fly, but Samus has beaten flying enemies before (Ridley!). I think I'm going to have to give this one to Samus, though because she NEVER RUNS OUT OF AMMO. Yeah, she can run out of missiles, super missiles, and power bombs, but her charge beam and regular bombs never seem to run out of juice. I haven't read much Iron Man, I admit, but I'm pretty sure there are practical limits to the amount of weaponry he can carry. Since both are so tough, it's going to come down to attrition, and it's hard to wear out someone who has an infinite supply of ammo.

If Samus has Power Bombs, she has a distinct advantage, since she can activate the special abilities of the Ice beam to create Ice Shields. With those on, it'd become a question of who can hit harder while dodging, really. Overall, I'd give it to Iron Man, because flight is just THAT useful for dodging.

Um, Iron Man's main weapons are his repulsor and uni-beam. The bullets and missiles are gravy on the side, really.

Sure, early versions had longevity issues, but at this point, I think he's no more vulnerable to running out of basic power than Samus.

I'm going to hand this one to Tony, due to two major factors in my mind: flight, and the concentrated nature of Samus's firepower.

Flight is a pretty obvious advantage over Samus, due to all classical tactical implications. Tony's typically shown to be capable of several times the speed of sound, so that gives him a large edge in evasive maneuvers. As well, he has very precise control over his movements, due to his armor interface.

The concentrated nature of Samus's firepower seems more pronounced an issue. In her suit, all her ranged stuff is in the one arm cannon. You knock that out, she's got Morph Ball Bombs, and her grappling line, neither of which have range. Her Zero Suit weapon, while potentially potent, has an even greater chance of being disarmed.
Meanwhile, Tony's got equal firepower in each arm, as well as central-mounted weaponry in, at the least, his uni-beam.

Samus doesn't seem to have anything more radical than any villian Tony's fought in the past. There are plenty of ice/fire/electricity using characters in the Marvel universe, and plain "frickin' lazers" are a dime a dozen.

Samus might give him some trouble, but barring her getting a significant drop on him, I give this one to Tony.

There's also the Plasma Beam with its superhotness and piercing ability, and the Wave Beam, which might short-circuit Iron Man's suit. And then there's the Annihilator Beam, which is basically Anti-Matter-y goodness. Combine the beams' infinite ammo and rapid shooting with the screw attack and Samus will become a living, jump-flying buzzsaw of flaming/freezing/shocking/annihilating death.

Going by Movie Iron Man, the repulsors can send a car flying and mess up apartments, but I don't think that'd be nearly enough to put Samus down. I think she's got Iron Man beaten fairly neatly in terms of firepower. The big issue is that Iron Man can fly, while Samus cannot. If we're in an open space then the advantage shifts to Iron Man, but if we're on a Space Pirate ship or something, then that minimalizes his ability to dodge by flying.

I still think Samus would have this one, because her futuristic pseudo-magical technology probably trumps anything Tony can cook up in his twenty-minutes-into-the-future world.

I highlighted the important part. This isn't movie Tony, this is comics Tony.
You know, the one who has a healing factor, nanotech armor, etc?
His stuff has pretty much hit this "pseudo-magical technology" at this point.
To put it in perspective, the suit from Secret War (back in the 70s) was jury rigged to blow through a mountain. (Granted, that was Mr. Fantastic jury rigging, but still.)
With a couple of decades advancement, and access to not only earth tech, but also alien tech? Yeah, Tony's pretty well on his game. Certainly, he's not as technologically advanced as, say, Richards, or certain factions in space. But he's leaps and bounds ahead of most everyone else.

Again, comics Tony has fought dudes who shoot ice, fire, lightning, plasma, antimatter, antilife, anti...well, you get the picture.

You might want to take back that statement. Sure, he doesn't get to use that, but nothing Samus has ever cooked up is on the level of that monstrosity. Plus, comic Iron Man has some pretty incredible stuff (and his Hulkbuster armor is just insane) in the suit. And I don't think Samus, fresh from Metroid Prime I, has enough firepower to kill a flying Tony.

I imagine the fight to end up something like this:

Iron Man blasts Samus.
Samus' suit is heavily damaged, but still operable.
Samus uses Zero Laser. Samus armor falls off.
Iron Man survives the blast.
Iron Man blinks and goes: "Wait, you're a chick?"
Iron Man takes Samus out to dinner.

I have three questions of great importance:
Does Iron man get his in suit AI?
And does samus's armor have any form of radio, connected to its on board computer systems.

(And yes, a neuro-network is still a computer. Tony stark has created a neuro-uplink for the time he was paralyzed, so he could probably hack her suit, given enough time.)
So the final question is: With AI assistance, can tony keep up with the dodging while trying to hack her armor?

No, the clear solution is this: Samus wins.

She removes her helmet, Stark decides to date Samus, and in his critical moment of weakness and non-suit-itude, Samus kills Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man.
#29

Armisael

Feb 06, 2009 19:15:50
That assumes intel about Tony, which Sammy doesn't have so...it doesn't really work. Assuming Samus actually just removed her helmet instead of speaking (a much more sensible course of action), it'd go like this:

-Samus removes helmet.
-Gets Hit by a repulsor blast or uni beam.
-Gets K. O.'ed.
-Tony takes her to someone who can heal people quick in hopes of asking her out when she recovers from the hits.
-Much fanfic ensues.

For the in bed thing: Samus has superhuman strength, speed, and endurance even without her armor. Tony doesn't.

Now, back to the actual, non-perverted topic...

I'm not familiar with the latest comic book versions of Ironman, so I'll ask these questions:

1. Does ironman have infinite ammo?
2. Can ironman withstand multiple particle beam shots to the face?
3. Can ironman singlehandedly defeat small armies of highly advanced and warlike aliens?

If the answer to all three is yes, then Ironman has a decent shot at beating Samus. Indeed, his flight might even put him at an advantage.

If not, Samus shuts down his suit by blinking at it, rips him out of the carapace, rapes him to death with her gun arm, and then blasts his molecules into dynamic equilibrium across several galaxies. Without even noticing she was fighting him.

Which is it?

1. Does ironman have infinite ammo?
2. Can ironman withstand multiple particle beam shots to the face?
3. Can ironman singlehandedly defeat small armies of highly advanced and warlike aliens?

1. With his Uni-beam and repulsor blasts, yes.
2. Depends on who's shooting them, although the answer will probably be yes.
3. Between Civil War and Secret Invasion, we saw just how ruthless Tony can be.

Let me put it to you this way: Iron Man is the Batman of Marvel.
*Inherited a multi-billion corp from thier dead father
*Philothranpic playboys
*Genius level intellect and the ability to apply it to crime fighting
*Access to massive amounts of super high-tech gadgetry
*Member of the powerhouse super team of thier universe (Justice League and Avengers)
*Both have dealt with drug issues (Tony was/is a drinker and Bruce had a drug problem)
*Both have a butler who was a member of the British Special Forces (Alfred and Jarvis)
*Deal with absolutely crazy stuff on a daily basis
*Thier biggest ally is a blue-costumed boy scout
Thus Iron Man = Batman
Batman = awesome and win
therefore Iron Man = awesome and win
Awesome and Win > Samus

The original post of this thread actually put Samus at a handicap by choosing her Metroid Prime gear. Metroid Prime actually represents Samus at second lowest strength level next to the original Metroid. If you want Samus to be at her best, one needs to look at Metroid Fusion. While Super Metroid represents the classic Samus Aran at her very best, at the end of Metroid Fusion, Fusion-Suit Samus has all of her Super Metroid capabilities plus a new bio-mechanical suit augmented with Metroid cells. So let's look at a summary of this version of Samus's powers:

Defenses:
The Power Suit and later Fusion suit provides several degrees of protection. Because of the Varia Suit, Samus is protected from extreme high and low temperatures, enough to resist being completely bathed in Magma for short periods of time. The Samus' armor is also a functional space suit, and provides protection against all but the most extreme environmental hazards (while it can't shrug off Phazon radiation without additional protection, it had no trouble protecting against the radioactive core of planet SR388). In addition, Samus's armor is augmented by an energy shield that is powered by internal energy tanks. Thanks to these defenses, Samus is capable of withstanding multiple direct hits from the most powerful weapons in the galaxy.

Main Weapon:
Earlier in this thread, people have mentioned that Samus has access to the electrical Wave Beam, the high temperature Plasma Beam, and the freezing Ice Beam. However, no has brought up that in Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, Samus's beam combines all of these properties and then some into a single super weapon. Here is a list of all the properties of Samus's Beam Cannon (note that Samus uses all of these effects simultaneously):
Ice Beam: Allows Samus to freeze targets into solid chinks of ice.
Plasma Beam: A high energy, highly destructive, armor penetrating beam.
Wave Beam: A beam that allows Samus to shoot through walls and even ignore some kinds of armor and defensive barrier.
Wide Beam: This turns Samus's beam into a wide area shotgun style blast.
Long Beam: This extends out Samus's firing range greatly (truth be told, without it Samus's firing range is notoriously limited).
Charge Beam: This allows Samus to charge up her shot into a much more powerful blast.
It is also worth noting that Samus can fire this shot in a continuous rabid-fire barrage, without having to pause for cool-down or having to worry about running out of ammo.

Sub-weapons:
Throughout the years, Samus Aran has also used a wise variety of high-powered Missiles and Bombs. These include various homing missiles, freezing missiles, super missiles, bombs, and the Super Bomb. While they do have limited ammo, they have enough firepower to damage even the most resilient monsters Samus has ever fought.

Mobility:
Thanks to the effects of the Gravity Suit, Samus can move through fluids like water as if they were air, letting her fight underwater with her full capabilities. Furthermore, Samus has the Space Jump, which lets her jump an infinite amount of times. While she doesn't have much maneuverability with it, it does give her some aerial fighting capability. In addition, the Morph Ball lets Samus fit through spaces no normal human in an armored battle suit could fit through, and the Spider Ball upgrade lets Samus climb walls in Morph Ball mode.

Speed Booster:
One of Samus Aran's most powerful abilities that no one in this thread has mentioned so far is her Speed Booster. If Samus has about forty feet or so to run in a straight line, she build up enough speed to activate the Speed Booster, a mode where Samus can run at extremely high speed and generate an intense energy field that destroys most enemies and obstacles in her path. In addition, by using the Shinespark maneuver, Samus can store that energy, and use it to launch herself through the air in any direction. In every Metroid game that has the Shinespark, it lasts until Samus hits a solid barrier, so there is no known limit on how far Samus can fly using this method.

Melee Capability:
Thanks to the Screw Attack and Shinespark, Samus's melee capabilities are not insignificant. The Screw Attack is Samus's most powerful single weapon, capable of instantly killing opponents that otherwise require multiple hits with her charged shot.

Sensor Capability:
The Metroid Prime series expanded on Samus's sensor capabilities to a much greater extent than the 2-D games, particularly with her Scanning Visor, which allowed Samus to analyze her enemies and discern their weaknesses. However, even Super Metroid gave Samus an X-Ray scanner, which allows her to see through walls and determine the composition (and vulnerabilities) of various materials. Considering how big a part of her arsenal her scanning visors have become thanks the Prime trilogy, they cannot be ignored. Various sensors Samus has possessed include Sonar, Infrared, and X-Ray scanners, which particularly help Samus fight invisible enemies.

Electronic Warfare Capability:
Based on references in Metroid Prime, Samus Aran's scanning visor functions as an incredibly powerful hacking tool. It has been able to consistently defeat the security of every computer she has come across, including the most secure mainframes of the Space Pirates.

Stealth Capability:
There have also been numerous references in Metroid Prime to Samus's ability to sneak past security systems and move around undetected using her Morph Ball. The Space Pirates' inability to find her gunship has also been blamed on a stealth system built into the ship.

Support:
It has been declared off-limits by the first post, but it is worth mentioning Samus Aran's gunship. In Metroid Prime 3, it has been established that Samus can directly control her gunship by interfacing with it using her suit. In addition, as a result of events in Metroid Fusion, Samus's latest gunship is equipped with a computer that is loaded with the intelligence and memories of Adam Malkovich, one of the most talented military minds of his generation.

Other abilities of the suit:
Samus's Power Suit apparently consists of biological components that fuse with Samus's physiology when the suit is in use. As a result, it cannot be forcibly removed from Samus. The biological nature of Samus's equipment was increased when she switched to her Fusion Suit based on Metroid cells. This gave the Suit the ability to absorb the X parasites, and use the information absorbed by the X parasites to evolve and acquire new powers. Other possible powers of the new Fusion Suit are unknown, since there have been no follow-up games to Metroid Fusion.

Skills and abilities:
Samus herself likely possesses superhuman abilities. She was raised and trained by the Chozo, one of the oldest and wisest races in the Galazy, and was also infused with Choze blood. Since Metroid Fusion, Samus has also been injected with Metroid cells, which have given her immunity to the X parasites and may have had other still unknown effects on her physiology.
Samus is one of the best warriors in her own galaxy, since she is responsible for single-handedly wiping out the Metroids, which are undoubtedly among the most dangerous alien monsters to ever appear in any form of science fiction. As demonstrated in her games, Samus Aran is an expert at solo infiltration of hostile enemy facilities. In that area, her skills are a match for the likes of Solid Snake. Furthermore, she has experience fighting all kinds of aliens, monsters, and bounty-hunters. She has even taken down at least two evil, super-powered, alien clones of herself.

Weaknesses:
Since Fusion Suit Samus now has Metroid cells in her body, she has developed a vulnerability to the cold. However, the Varia suit effectively compensates for this weakness.
For some reason, powerful acid has been consistently able to damage Samus's Power Suit. She was forced to rely on a special counter-measure devise in Metroid Prime 3.
Samus's main psychlogical weakness is her loner streak and disdain for military command. She very rarely works with others.

I think Samus has a far better chance at beating Tony Stark in a fight than many people have been giving her credit for. In particular, Samus Aran would have a decided advantage in a fight occurring in closed quarters, which is her realm of specialty. That would limit Iron Man's one advantage over her: his flying capability.
