Jan 12, 2009 15:05:45 I wanted to share this guy's story with you all because I think he should be remembered.

When I was living in Santa Cruz there was this shaggy hippy who would stand on the corner every morning, waving his arms and chanting. They told me he was known as Raoul the Sun-Starter, and that's what he was doing. He was starting the sun.

I heard he was a hero from the Viet Nam war, decorated veteran, saved his unit, real hero material, and an all-around good guy. Somewhere along the line, his mind went south on him. Nobody could get him into the hospital for treatment. He refused. Since he was harmeless to himself and others, there was nothing that could legally be done.

So every morning Raoul would go out and start the sun.

One night, some bunch of punks known as "troll hunters" killed him while he slept beneath his bridge. Who'd miss a shaggy homeless guy anyway?

That morning the sun did not seem to rise. The sky was darkly overcast and it rained buckets. Raoul did not start the sun. The police caught the punks and they were charged, the sun finally came out again, but Santa Cruz had lost an important member of society. She had lost her sun-starter.

If anyone here lived in Santa Cruz during the early 80's and remembers Raoul the Sun-Starter, salud.

That is more or less a stereotype. Yes, many homeless are vets, but it isn't an overwhelming majority or anything.

Jan 14, 2009 16:51:24 The group was called the Troll Hunters? Don't you think it would have occurred to them that they weren't hunting a troll. Yes, both the homeless and trolls are dirty and smell, but that's as far as the comparison goes. Man these people really have something messed up in their heads to miss the mark by such a large margin of error. If you want to kill trolls you play D&D (or a related fantasy game), not prowl the streets looking for homeless. Damn people are stupid.

Jan 14, 2009 19:02:37 They weren't a group called "The Troll Hunters", they were people known as "troll hunters". Homeless people got the nickname of "trolls" because many of them took shelter beneath bridges, a la "The Three Billy Goats Gruff". No D&D connection, thankfully.

Now everytime I watch the sunrise I think of Raoul.

The homeless can be some very helpful people if your nice to them.

Raoul will live forever now, after shedding the mortal coil. As long as you remeber his name and what he does, his life will last as long as yours. If you pass on to others the story of Raoul and starting the sun, he'll live as long as his story continues to be told.

His life now lies in your hands. Nourish him by telling the tale and he will bring you the sunrise for the rest of your days. It is in the memory of a man that immortality exists.
