Reactions of Non-Gamers when they see you playing a game.

Please note, this was referring more to video-games than PnP games, but both work fine for the purposes of this discussion.

So, I was giving my sister a lift to Hitchcock (a town) so she could meet her friend that would drive her the rest of the way to her place. However, my sister, being who she is, demanded that she drive instead of me. So, I pulled out my laptop, and fired up Neverwinter Nights 2.

I was talking to Neeshka (a tiefling rogue) when I hear "WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER FACE!?"

This led to me trying to explain tieflings to her; then, she saw that my character was wearing a blindfold (I'm RPing him as a sort of blind-samurai type), and began questioning me about that. Then, just to mess with her, I started talking to Khelgar (dwarven fighter/brawler) about the joys of bar-room fighting. This eventually led to her saying "That game is weird" and stopped paying attention.

What are your experiences with this sort of thing?

truthfully? most people i know play videogames, since i work tech support.

as for D&D, if the person who doesn't know what the book is.

Them : "Whazzat?"
Me : *looks up from book* "Dungeons & Dragons"
Them : "Huh. didn't know they still made that."
Me : "Yup. You played before?"
Them : "No/used to/no time ATM/not my thing/never saw that book before"
Me : "Cool" *if other person drops subject and we have nothing else to talk about, i bid them adieu and return to the book otherwise we chat for a bit*

or if they recognize it

Them : "That D&D?"
Me : "Yup. Xth edition." (usually 4th unless i'm looking something up for another campaign)
*chitchat about game follows, branching off into other subjects, then we part ways and i continue reading*

or if i'm at the FLGS playing D&D
Them : "Cool they're playing D&D"

most people honestly don't care that i play D&D.

Reaction I got from someone at my job:

Him (after me explaining a bit of how it works): So you guys basically sit around a table looking at miniature figurines moving around rocks and plastic trees, throwing all sorts of dice and telling each others stories for 12 hours straight?

Me( a bit embarrased): Yeah, that's about it.

Him: Neat, can I play?

I live in a heavily Christian occupied town, but being a Right-wing atheist, I'm half okay with that. Most people who see me flipping through my books are polite enough to keep their mouths shut if they disapprove. You know, just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you have to share it unbidden. Those who don't disapprove will ask about the game or share fond memories of their own games. A few have even done the "It's still around? Cool! Where can I get the books?" One guy at an oil-change shop saw the book and got a silly smirk on his face. I knew what was going through his mind, so I intercepted with a wry smile, "I swear, if you ask me what level Dungeon Master I am, I'm going to make you listen to the ranking system of the RPGA." We had a good chuckle.

I've had a wide range of reactions from.

"You are too attractive to be a gamer" Or some variation there of. Which include "too muscular/athletic to be a gamer" etc.

Which always leaves me confused. I don't consider myself all that special looking, and I get that the stereotypical gamer reeks of cheetos and BO with buck teeth layers of flab, and large glasses but seriously?

Who actually looks like that?

"You are going to hell. That game is the work of the devil you should change your ways now!" This one is my personal favorite. Which usually incites one of three reactions from me. Number 1 I might quote some random song phrase such as "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints... the sinners are much more fun".

Two, I might ask them how many of the commandments they have broken that day. Usually if they say "None!" I'll ask them if they worship Jesus. If they say "Of course" that leads to me saying "Well there's gods before god right there. Nice job"

Three, one of my typical ones. I'll just play it up. "hey I need some good luck this weekend. Can you sell me your soul so I can roll better on my dice?" Etc. Always priceless.

That's kids stuff Which I then point out that the average age for a gamer is 26. After that I don't say anything further. Personally I'd wager that the guy spending time gaming with his friends is probably more mature than the guy that sneaks out to bars and gets drunk every friday night like a stupid teenager.

I used to do that This one's usually one of the more pleasent ones to get. Might actually drum up conversation there. See why they don't do it anymore etc.

No reaction at all which is just fine with me.

Wow, you spent alot of time on those Minis Variations include You must practice alot. I like this one too, because generally someone's giving praise for skill or effort there. It's obvious alot of love goes into real gaming. Be it painting and converting minis, or practicing your skills at Halo 3 or what have you. (and by practicing Halo 3 I don't mean just getting piss drunk logging onto live and not learning anything, or just being a little 13 year old loser that says "**** **** ****!" over and over) Typical reactions include me grinning like an idiot or me saying thank you.

Is it expensive? I'd like to get my son into something like this I also like this one too, cause it shows parental concern and interest in their kids. I'll generally try to be helpful.

Not trying to turn this into a religious debate or anything, but the second one actually isn't true - at least according to the Nicene Creed, Jesus is, in fact, God (at least partly; compare God of God, Light of Light, True God of True God, conceived, not made, of one substance with the Father), so not only does worshipping Jesus not break the first commandment, it is actually a requirement for the Commandments to apply at all. Plus, breaking a Commandment isn't the same as worshipping Satan, so the logic of that argument is debatable.

The third one, however, made me laugh tears. Awesome job.

Hated: If another religion ever pulled the "YOU ARE GOING TO HELL" Card, they'd be right in there in that post too. :P

Another one to do is the Scientology card. (No I'm not a Scientologist I find them creepy religion wise.. too Wacko Cult like for me)

Heh. We were talking about a book in English class the other day (The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien) and we got into a Call of Duty discussion. Of course, I was one girl in a group of three or four boys. When I said that I played CoD, they were all like, what!? It's always funny, because no one expects the girls to play war games.

As for D&D, someone this morning saw my FR campaign setting book (D&D 3.0 Ed.) and practically geeked out. In other words, he stole it. I had to punch him in the kidney to get it back. Funny thing was, he was wearing a Star Wars shirt. Gotta love total geekdom. It's nice to know I'm not the only D&D player in school.

No no no.  Punching someone in the kidneys is a good way to get peed on.  If you're into watersports, there's plenty of other ways to initiate that sort of thing without getting into assault.  Unless you like it rough.  If you like it rough, it's tough to beat the punch/pee combo.

Reactions?  Normally not much.  My current environment (NMIMT) has a pretty high geek concentration, so people react to video games, board games, or pen and paper games with either interest or indifference.

Other "non gamers" we've shown our games to have mostly been the same, though we managed to get my SO's mother hooked on Settlers of Catan.

PnP gaming.

I call those people, "spectators" because they watch and often add comments. Long ago, I did not allow spectators. If you didn't play, you weren't invited. Now I don't care because I include spectators in the game whether they like it or not. If often amuses whoever is watching, when the players encounter a monster with the name and appearance of the spectator. I attempt to make it entertaining for everyone, whether or not you are participating in the actual game.

My different groups and I have had comments along the lines of " you guys are super nerds" but also "that seems like a very interesting hobby" and even " You've never had sex, have you?".

I laugh it off because most of the time, the people making the negative comments can't step outside their personal image for fear of looking "bad" or "less cool" Many times, the people refusing to play, simply have stagefright and cannot loosen up enough to enjoy something not considered "hip". Although I'v gotten most naysayers to play the game a few times, and some actually enjoyed it.

As for video games. Basically boils down to the same thing, with different words said. But I'v made money off playing games. (gambling) So people aren't so quick to throw out negative comments when they know you can walk away from a nerdy hobby, a few hundred dollars richer.

This really applies to any hobby. Not just D&D or video games. Fishing, playing pool, watching sports or spending time and money on your street racer, all of which will have people who have some negative bs to spew (including myself)

I am going to get a bit wacky and re-rail this one. I have some interesting thoughts on this topic.

At my former place of work World Of Warcraft is king among those 18-30 age group. Almost every plays and contantly I am hearing about this raid or that quest. I really have no problems with that at all. But when I break out my Player's Handbook, I am the one who gets called the geek and the dork and such.

A couple of guys I also used to work with were hardcore Min/Max guys with D&D. Contstantly mixing this book with that feat and adding a dash of this class. Coming up with things I would never allow, so broken things. But then they switch to WoW and D&D is suddenly out of fashion!?!

I don't understand this at all. Wow is a fantasy game, elves, dwarves and magic and all of it. But for some reason that is "cool" but D&D is still geeky.

When my group plays in a public place (rare), We mostly just get looks from people and not a lot of comments. Probably the most common comment we get is to please keep it down because we tend to get a bit loud during combat. Others we get are like: "Is that D&D?" "What are you playing?" "Is that Magic the Gathering?" "Oh man, I used to play D&D so much when I was younger" "4E? Eww! What's wrong with you? 2nd Edition is the only way to play." etc. etc.

Most questions are answered, comments addressed, and elitists are told to bugger off (politely).

that is such an everquest 2 quote (see WDYWTTA? VI)

EDIT: I had so many goddamn shinies in EQ2 that I'd sell them all because I had all the ones I got already. A "shiny" in EQ2 was a collectible item that went in, well, a collection. When you completed a collection, you would get an item for it. Sometimes it would be equippable (e.g. a necklace), or it could be a house item (e.g. Stuffed Beaver). We'd always fight over who would get the shiny, and if someone started "gathering" said shiny before us, we'd get mad. Because we had eyes on that puppy for a while. What really sucks is when you run into people that "farm" the shinies (collect every shiny they see, often to sell them) because they'll sell ridiculously common shinies for ridiculously high prices.

No.  It's so right it's righter than right.  Right + Right != Wrong.  Right + Right = Righter.

I'd have to say the best reaction is always from my own mother. Any time she hears about me playing a game, or a new D&D/SW session I've started up, she rolls her eyes and grins. If people are around, sometimes she'll say "That one ain't mine!", the laugh for a bit. All in good humour, but there are people out there you actually mean it. Kinda sad, really.

Okay, bit of a story here. I , llike most Role-Players, enjoty a variety of games;

  • D&D

  • Mutants and Masterminds

  • Marvel RPG (once)

  • I've glanced at the Star Wars RPG

So, when I bring home 2 BattleTech Booster Packs, she groans and complains I'm doing too many RPGs.

My parents don't let me play violent games, (Call of Duty, Battlefield, you get the picture) I'm in all honors except for math (which I think I could get to honors, but due to stupid school system I can't)

You think she'd be happy I play games that flex my imagination and have me do math.

*sigh*

I kind of like the magic quiz... It seems fitting to the various forum posters on here.

I feel for you though. My parents stopped caring what I played after I got my own job. They never minded me playing D&D, or Magic. But they did have a thing against the M rated games. Once I hit 16 though they stopped caring.

Tragic. I feel for you on both points. I remember when I started Warhammer 40k all those years ago (I think I was in sixth or seventh grade - it was 2e, I believe), my father forbade me reading this "crypto-fascistoid subculture" (his exact words, I swear), so I had to read the rulebooks in secret. Though, credit where it's due, at least he read through the 40k rulebook before coming to this conclusion - a conclusion I can well understand, though I love the setting and all. Well, I suppose as long as your parents aren't preventing you from gaming at all, you should be happy about it. I know it's tough, but you really can't change people (I've seen a single exception to that in my entire life), and they will soon enough accept that as well.

Had an experience yesterday that's semi-relevant to this:

My Mum had come up to visit and we stopped by the supermarket before she left. At the checkout the woman working the till noticed I was wearing a D&D t-shirt and commented that her daughter and partner were gamers/cos players/rein-actors etc. I responded positvely always happy to see the things I love being recognised. What surprised me was that she any mother then launched into a conversation about various aspects of these hobbies and how interesting cons and such were and how bad it was that such things weren't more openly accepted by society in general. It was refreshing to say the least.

Having read the last few posts regarding parents I have to say I'm apparently lucky to have parents who not only accept my geekery but support it.

As for reactions to games, here in the UK there's less of the religious hate so I haven't encountered that and only a few times since leaving school have I suffered any derision for being a gamer. More often I get the "Oh I didn't know that was still going", "Oh you mean with the models and dice" or "Is that like a board game?" responses. Occasionaly patrons of the pub that rents it back room to my local gaming club will wander in and ask the age old "Are you winning?" or get scared off by the noisier club members shouting out things that must seem bizarre out of context.

There was also the barman we had at the club for a while who didn't seem to like us at first but seemed to warm to us once he realised we were a good kind of different. So all in all a quite positive experience. I'd like to say Brits are more accepting of such things but I think it's more that many who do look down on the hobby are too reserved/polite too say anything (body language gives them away sometimes though).

Well, I don't want to complain about my parents, they really were a lot better concerning those things than on video games, and by the time I was sixteen (and had gotten back from America ), I could pretty much play whatever I wanted.

Finding acceptance here is hard, however - though I must say I haven't tried terribly hard.

Sorry, someone else moved to Rhode Island last month, and the state's been notified by the Fire Marshals that they've exceeded the fire safety codes again, so they had to kick somebody out...

Nobody else is allowed to move to Rhode Island until somebody dies. Laughing

Back on the subject, at least tangentially, my parents were so happy that I wasn't out blowing stuff up or drinking, stealing and fighting that they didn't care what I played or watched on tv, lol.

Most of the time, people's reactions to me reading a D&D book or playing with dice in public are generally just polite and mildly curious. Of course, that may have something to do with me being a very large and imposing man with a great deal of acting training which allows me to put up an aura of "I can set you on fire by disapproving of you." without a great deal of effort. Tongue out

Like other posters have said, I'm generally polite and friendly to those who are also polite and friendly, viciously witty to those fools who were dumb enough to set themselves up for a great remark, and generally ignore anyone with insufficient entertainment value to justify acknowledging their existence.

I'd say you can drive through Rhode Island without noticing, but... ah, who am I kidding.  I drive further on a day trip to my parents house then Rhode Island is long.  Some of the students at my school have longer road trips as part of their daily commute then Rhode Island has roads.  I've been to cities that have more people then the entire state of Rhode Island.

And yes, I have also been to Rhode Island.

I'm affraid I cannot relate to your simile in any way so your point is lost on me.

Update: I thought Torn Vinyl was mabey a band name, but wikipedia returns no results for torn vinyl. I recognize that Records where refered to as being made of Vinyl, but have yet to come up with any information about why anyone would say "Torn Vinyl" or use Torn as equivilant for Rent.

Update 2: Torn is the past tense of tear, a synonym to rend, who past tense for is rent, a homonym of Rent as used above. As for why anyone would ever say "Torn Vinyl", I fear I may never know.
