Incredibly sad news. He was a giant in metal and one of my favorite singers. I got to see him in concert three times (Dio's "Lock Up the Wolves" tours, Black Sabbath's "Dehumanizer" tour and Heaven & Hell's first tour in '07) and got to meet him once. Like a lot of us, I was so looking forward to the new album and tour. Hopefully there is enough material competed for a posthumous / memorial release. This is a major loss.

I am simply amazed that Ozzy didn't go first. With all the drugs and alcohol he consumed. I cannot believe he outlived Ronnie James Dio.
I suspect that the mixture it created in is blood is what keeps him alive and somewhat zombified.
But all hail Ozzy, I still like him.
And DIO died of cancer, no way to predict that and can even be totally unrelated to his "abuses"., though stomach cancer might be related to a high and prolonged alcohol intake.

Most of his best work wasn't with Sabbath. You should really check out what he did besides before deciding whether you like him or not.
I like the Sabbath material a lot. "Neon Knight" and "Lady Evil" and especially "Die Young" are amongst my favorite tracks. But I agree with your opinion, Erato, that some of his best work is elsewhere. I am a huge fan of Rainbow (in all of its incarnations) and the band's first three studio albums really highlight Dio's vocal range. The double-live record quite solidly illustrates that he was even better on stage. So, yeah, for the best examples of Dio's skills, visit the Rainbow catalog.
Seeing him on the first Heaven & Hell tour in 2007 (that's the same band as Sabbath with a legally-required name change, for those of you who don't know) was amazing. Even with all the years, his note range still was a bit better than pretty good and his power and stamina were the equal of someone thirty years younger.

Yeah, I've heard plenty of the other stuff, too. And I don't like it. Just not my style is all. No criticism, it just doesn't please the ol' ears. Someone listed some songs earlier for people unfamiliar with Dio to check out. I've heard most and liked none. Like I said, though, it's just a personal thing. No biggie.

His solo work was excellent in my opinion. I realize it might sound funny to people who grew up in the 90s or 00s (though I actually think the 00s had a very similar musical tone to the 80s). But I'd take Ronnie James Dio, belting out the notes with glamorous confidence, over Cobain (or any other grunge rocker for that matter) whining about minutiae.
Apparently, the Westboro Baptist Church wants to protest at Dio's funeral. I've checked their website and the news appears to be legit. I would like to say it's the sickest thing I've ever heard, but it's not really any different from what they've otherwise done. If they go through with it, I hope no one rises to the bait and attacks, but with a horde of angry metal fans, I wont count on it

As non-religious (somewhere between agnostic and atheist) myself, I'm reluctantly forced to agree. Very few religious people (I'm talking Taleban, child molesting priests, and Jerry Falwell kind of religious) deserve to be compared to the WBC. They're not representative of religion, if anything, they're more representative of lawyers, and what's wrong with the US legal system and the phrase "It's just words".

I agree fanatacism is the problem. but fanatacism isn't limited to religion. People can be fanattical about anything they've invested meaning into. There are fanatics for the american constitution for example. There are always going to be people who will insist on taking vital documents and reading them literally, with no room for interpretations that differ from their own. This is what I experienced in the middle east daily. But to be honest, I have been seeing it more and more in the US.
Sure you can be fanatical about anything, but to get fanatics in large groups usually involves the R word.
Exactly how many threads does the OTT need that discuss religion? I only want to know so I'll know if we met our quota yet.
