Russia's had a bajillion diamonds forever.  And diamonds that people would actually buy to wear, too.  They had other companies come in as 'consultants' to set up their mines and then booted them, took their tech and gear and went on minin'.  A few years back they threatened to blow up the market by flooding it with their stones.  See, it's not like jewelers just call DeBeer's or whoever when they need a few rocks.  Not how it works.  The diamonds are auctioned annually.  And DeBeer's sets the number of how many are released.  Diamonds are actually far, far less rare than colored stones (many of which are basically diamonds that gre up near some other element that lent its color) and far less rare than the jewelry companies want you to think.  There's money in them because the market is artificially limited.  Anyhoo, it would seem that DeBeer's and Russia worked something out cuz that market shift never materialized.  But yeah, Russia has loads of diamonds.
