| #2thecasualoblivionMay 20, 2008 17:25:22 | Note that this is the off topic forums. Which means almost anything is fair play here. :woot ! That sounds ominous... |
| #3gamileoMay 20, 2008 17:29:21 | yes... two whole posts. Have fun in isolation. |
| #4RamienMay 20, 2008 17:34:47 | No, not farmers help point, this: You do realize in the comic put in the very same day, he put in one 4e joke (the funniest joke in that comic, since it fits so well), and says it'll likely read like some hybrid of 3.5 and 4e? |
| #5vaalingrade_ashland_02May 20, 2008 22:04:27 | So what are you going to do when Rich more likely than not does some design work in 4e? Or, even more likely, has 4e homebrew material on his site? |
| #6elondirMay 21, 2008 9:00:01 | The way I understand what I read, is that Rich isn't against 4e. It's just that an edition change would cause too big of a change to the incredibly awesome, complex, and amazing story he's got going. Rather than change his story to fit the new rules, he's going to stick it out using his 3.5e world, with 4e references thrown in where they work. |

Rather than change his story to fit the new rules, he's going to stick it out using his 3.5e world, with 4e references thrown in where they work. In OOC terms, the players and the game master got together and decided they didn't want to convert to 4e right now and decided to wrap up their 3.5 game first. Also, PsionX, way to go reading exactly what Rich Burlew said you shouldn't into his news post -_- |
| #8HaldrikMay 22, 2008 18:38:56 | For crying out loud, one of the main characters in Order of the Stick is a Bard. Em CANT convert to 4e, until stats for the Bard come out. Like em said, ems story will be a homebrew combining 3e & 4e, that follows the humor wherever it leads. |
| #9HaldrikMay 22, 2008 18:53:35 | Psionx, in your sig you said, "If you want custom campaigns and monsters go with 3.5 [not 4e]". I dont understand your point. For me, one of the best parts of 4e is it is so customizable. Especially in a Homebrew, its easy to mix-and-match powers, while maintaining a reasonable degree of balance. I never used Prestige Classes in 3e because they were poorly designed mechanically, and wildly imbalancing. The base classes didnt customize well nor multiclass well. The Gish rarely came into ems own. Actually, the 3.5 system wasnt good for customization. It just had a lot of splatbooks. 4e seems better for customization. At the moment, 4e has few options because its new, but as more 4e books come out, it seems to have a solid structure to accommodate fluid customization while still maintaining balance. For example, for my first 4e character, Il probably be using "power cards" more than my character sheet to track character info. In the not-so-distant future, customization will be as easy as shuffling cards! |
| #10elondirMay 29, 2008 15:21:08 | "Shuffling cards" is one thing I definitely don't want in D&D. RE customization: the most customizable option is generic classes from 3.5 Unearthed Arcana. It's as close to classless as you can get in D&D. If it's classless, then all those class abilities become available as feats. Ta da! Anything you can think up, right there. |
| #11RamienMay 29, 2008 16:46:48 | "Shuffling cards" is one thing I definitely don't want in D&D. And how do we know there won't be an equally customizable option available in 4e? |
| #12daidojitaidoruMay 29, 2008 18:14:10 | And how do we know there won't be an equally customizable option available in 4e? Because that level of customiztion is fairly bad for game balance. Point buy systems need to be designed from the ground up with limitations preset to avoid horrendous min maxing and still require GM knowledge and oversight to work. And that's going against the design concepts of 4th ED. If 4th ED is ever as customizable as 3rd ED they've failed, because that means someones recreated Pun-pun and can do anything. The question is how much customization will be lost making sure the noob and the char op master can play in the same game. |
| #13HaldrikJun 02, 2008 0:22:34 | One of the devs talked about customization. They designed 4e so its easy to customize characters. Just swap a Wizard "Spell" power with a Fighter "Exploit" power. Its done. However, for official rules to ensure balance for inexperienced players, devs decided to make it less flexible. (There was a huge debate among the devs about multiclassing.) Even so, in the hands of an expert DM who can "sense" game balance, its extremely easy to homebrew custom characters. By mixing-and-matching features, powers, feats, skills, etc. |
| #14straythJun 05, 2008 18:28:12 | So glad Rich picked that series back up; for a while it seemed like even he was bored with it. |
