Feb 04, 2009 2:41:57 First Off: I search for Sci-fi in the Search and got nothing, but if i did it wrong and this has been asked before i apologize in advance.

Anyway, Ive been looking for a good Sci-Fi RPG to play with my group when we want a change of pace. I want one with plenty of lore and preferably free. So has anyone played one or something like this?

Feb 04, 2009 2:55:03 I'm not well versed in the field of sci-fi RPGs, but is there a particular subgenre that interests you or your players the most? Like, space opera? Cyberpunk? Post-apocalypse? Etc.

Feb 04, 2009 2:58:52 I'm a fan of Space Opera's (I think, Mix of Fantasy/Sci-fi I.e: Star wars?) and post -Apoc. I forgot to mention that i disliked D20 Modern and Future so please don't suggest it.

There are various editions from Classic (which came out shortly after the original D&D) which was pretty freeform (create your own worlds) to Megatraveller (with its own setting).

You play ex-servicemen who've mortaged a spacecraft and are now free to explore the galaxy. Very much a sandbox (ie players explore and do what they want). NO levels or XP - you pay for education if you want to improve your skills. Very very different from any edition of D&D.

WEG's: Star Wars: Fast paced cinematic play. No longer available new (as WOTC has the Star Wars licence) but you might find it second hand. There are also fan sites and the core-system (sans all Star Wars references) is available from WEG for free (between the core system and fan sites you could pretty much reconstruct the original game.

Not actually an RPG (just a skirmish game with some plot) but http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=cat1290321&aId=2600003 may be to your liking. You could probably homebrew an RPG out of it.
Also you might want to track donw the pre-D20 Gamma World (similar to old AD&D) for post-apocalyptic.

OF these I'd recomend Star Wars and Classic Traveller the most.

Feb 04, 2009 6:29:15 As far as a system, the best ones I've played are Saga Star Wars and Alternity. Saga comes with stock SW fluff, and Alternity had a couple of different settings that were pretty good.

Feb 04, 2009 11:33:02 I have played Gamma World, Space Frontiers, Star Wars, d20 Modern, Alternity, Cyberpunk, Rifts, GURPS, and Shadowrun. I enjoyed them all. I think you might have an easier time getting material for Star Wars, d20 Modern, Rifts, GURPS, and Shadowrun. If you want to be able to jump in quickly go for Star Wars, d20 Modern, or Rifts. They are all similar enough to DnD that you will pick them up quickly. GURPS is completely a point buy system which comes with it's own merits and flaws. Shadowrun is a lot of fun. It's set far enough in the future to feel different but not so far that you can't envision what's going on.
