I'm not certain what to make of this "question" (note the lack of question-mark).

I believe he is referring to the characters in the animated television show Yu-Gi-Oh, who apparently live and die based on the outcome of a card game. He's wondering what the real life equivalent is.

I dunno. War, maybe?

There have been extremely vicious battles on Internet forums over the differing versions/spinoffs/derivatives of Dungeons And Dragons, even going as far as legally actionable activity.

Ugh. Celebrity gossip. This bothers me so much. WHY does it matter who Jennifer Aniston is dating? WHYYY? I feel bad for saying this, but I automatically lose a lot of respect for people if I find out they read People or InTouch or whatever. I can barely imagine anything that is more of a waste of time than following celeb gossip. And it's such a big deal to so many (because it's such a big deal to the media, I guess).

Just... ugh. :raincloud

I know. In middle school, I knew these kids that kept going on about "The Heart of The Cards" Or some crap like that. I just played the game, I never bothered to watch the movies/show. And they called me a munchkin because I swapped out some weaker cards for some uber-power ones, saying crap like "you need to have faith and loyalty to your cards!" And I would blow them away with Exodia (spelling?) and my dragons. Damn. Now I wish I didn't sell all those cards.

In my school I was more surprised by the whole underworld/mafia side of it. People stealing cards, tournaments, blah, blah.....I think I once stole a complete deck just for the fun of it as I find TCG a money pit.

I just played for fun: but I beat the crap out of anyone who tried to steal my cards. I spent good money on those cards, if they want it, they CAN BUY THEM FROM ME! (which a buddy of mine did)

I never played in any games where the loser had to give up his best card, c'mon. It's a freakin game. It IS NOT SO SERIOUS.

it was pretty much the same with M:tG back home in the day.

people were using big decks full of cool cards and i was playing a VERY focused deck with it's own strategy as well as reading articles on the mechanics & design of the game.

7 times out of 10 i'd win. 1 of 10 losses were due to mana screw. 2 of 10 were due to actual play mistakes and my opponents using strategy better then mine.

that's not saying their strategies were bad. we were pretty well matched in that department, but their decks usually lacked focus or were just a bunch of cards thrown in. unlike your friends, mine learned the value of 4x copies and tightening the focus of their decks.

Mar 09, 2009 15:35:40
Actually, I played against Tyler and Thomas, hoping they would get better. (they were not my friends. I just played out of morbid curiosity)

they used the "themed" decks that specific characters in the shows used, which could not stand up to mine. I had like, five different decks depending on what style of play I wanted.

You guys had a completely different experience than I did. I was completely unable to play Magic at my school because I basically didn't have the money. It was extremely serious business. If your deck had more than 40 cards, you sucked. If you took more than seven rounds to end the game, you sucked. If you used more than two creatures, you sucked. I was patching decks together from packs, but everybody I knew was buying their cards one by one from huge binders in the game shop.

Oh, to pay for those cards I had to do TONS of odd jobs for everyone. My parents didn't pay for it. It took me several years to get everything I had.

you do know that standard tournament regulation deck size in magic is 60 cards, right?

in some games, like drafts, they allow a 40 card minimum because your card pool is too small to make a decent deck.

i don't know which MtG blocks you were playing in, but creature decks, like weenie white, goblins, elves, ect... were always pretty strong.

we didn't have much tourneys in my area since the closest card shop was a 20 minute drive and twice that to the nearest Sanctioned Games (FNM, Provincials, ect...). we couldn't piece decks together like i could here in town, but we managed.

One of the reasons why I don't play M:tG anymore is because of the over-competitiveness. I would buy the premade decks and tweak them by a couple of cards, but everyone I knew was putting together these monstrous decks that had all kinds of tricky and frustrating cards to play against. It got to the point where I just didn't enjoy playing anymore because everyone took themself too seriously and there was no way I'd ever win.
#23

Mar 09, 2009 17:14:55
see that's why the M:tG scene at my FLGS is pretty cool. i don't play anymore (my MtG funds are going towards RPG books ATM) but when i do stop by they generally play a very casual game of multiplayer.

there is competitive magic at the other LGS (they have the DCI license for FTM or whatever) but that "keeping up with the jones" mentality drove me away.

i'll be back one day though, when i dredge up my phytohydra or chronozoa decks.

I use to play M:tG. I always beat everybody with no effort. I had to make my decks crappy in order to get people to play me. My favorite deck is my blue deck that is over 100 cards. I think it is between 150 to 200 cards. It is designed to stall until I can get a lot of land out and a Mirrari (sp?). I would then play a card that would allow for me to take an extra turn and then copy it a time or two. I'd then go and do the same thing at the end of my last turn. I would keep doing that and would slowly chew them away. I once took aver 20 turns in a row. I had to kill the other person because they were getting to bored.

Once I had Beacon of Tomorrows as my only card left in my deck.

I would continuesly take turns I wouldn't deck myself because I could keep reshuffling my graveyard into my library. I also had the ability to have my hand over that max limit, I could rearrange my the top X cards of my library at will, reshuffle my deck at will, pick specific cards out of my deck when needed, and return permanents to their owners hands. With an ever ending amount of turns I am able to capsize every permanent an opponent has back to their hand. I'll then go and remove their library from the game then slowly ping them to death with a Tim.

My friends and I would always parody the Yu-Gi-Oh players when we played Magic. Morph cards were especially good for that.

"And now, I place one creature face down in defense mode... AND END MY TURN!" Saying the last part really loud, while standing up with a hand on the card, wide eyes, and a serious expression. At least until we burst out laughing.

I used a simple strategy: overwhelm with superior firepower and use traps and spells to nerf the enemy. Simple, direct, effective. That's just my style. Complex plans ALWAYS go wrong. Simple ones tend to work more often.
#34

pigknight

Mar 09, 2009 23:14:09
I had 10~12 different combos in that deck. If you're going to use a complex strategy, don't rely on one and make sure you use cards for at least 7 and each can stand on their own.
#35

baneofelves

Mar 09, 2009 23:17:49
Yeah. But I just tend to prefer simpler plans anyways. I hate it when a beautifully crafted plan goes wrong. (I still will upon occasion create a intricate plan)
#36

pigknight

Mar 09, 2009 23:22:11
At most my plans use 5 cards such as:

Dark Hex Sealed Fusion (used for all my fusions)
Buster Blader (used for anti-dragon/pure attack)
Dark Paladin (fusion monster, and used for spell canceling and attack.)
Night Assailant x2 (insta-killing)

Individually all these cards are useful, but together I shut down my opponent's spells permenantly.

Any sports. A kid in my city got shot dead in the last week over a HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME. WTF?! Serious bussiness indeed.

On a different note, as a proffessional chef, certain things are Serious Business for us.

SALT - How much is the right amount. I've known people to fail their certification test because ONE of the three judges felt ONE of the 11 items had to much or to little salt. Especially fun is when two judges conflict on this. One says to much salt, the other to little. And you still fail... MORONS!

Corn Starch vs Roux - Roux, for those who don't know, is equal parts by weight flour and butter, cooked together. Like corn starch it's used to thicken sauces and soups. Some people like to use Corn Starch, and consider making Roux to be a waste of time, done by people who have a stick up thier posterier. Others like to use Roux, and consider corn startch to have bad flavor, a lazy option, and classless.
I've seen a fist fight break out over this. I've seen people Fired over this. I've seen a 65 year old man threaten a General Manager of a 4 million dollar a year bussiness with a chef's knife because the Executive Chef refused to let him buy Corn Starch. He got his way.

Cooking is SERIOUS BUSINESS. People have broken into places for recipies. Filled lawsuits over them. Killed for them. And that's just in the last month...

And boy howdy. Corn starch makes my blood boil. You can just by looking at a sauce/soup/anything if it was thickened with corn starch. It looks like runny jello.

I'll second TiwazTyrsfist said. This industry claims amongst its founders a chef who killed himself because his fish shipment was late. Of course, the fact that cooks are, generally, drunk, drugged up, vagrants too crass to get any other job who get paid to wield giant knives and play with fire doesn't help (or at least it used to be that way, before kitchens had to play nice).

New subject:

Twilight vs. The Eragon Movie

WHICH IS WORSE?

Honestly, I'd have to say Eragon was worse. It barely held my attention and the story was very choppy and hard to follow. Furthermore, even the descriptions I've been hearing of the books make it a total rip off of Star Wars. Twilight is at least good for a laugh, Eragon was just boring.

I hate to agree with the elf lover, but I must.

Eragon sucks. I haven't seen Twilight, but I can at least laugh at stupid teenage girl* ideas of vampires. (the dumb teen girls)

I laugh at stupid stuff all the time. Twilight will likely be one of those things.

well, we're currently not accepting anyone in our wednesday 3rd ed group (we usually have 5-7 players +Dm).

the 4th ed game was started as the few of us with spare time on mondays wanted to play D&D (we usually have 3-4 players +DM). we're playing the H series of modules right now and we're not holding our punches (playing a 5 person module with 3 people is hard...).

we don't really play 2nd ed, though i wouldn't mind dusting off those tomes and rolling up a pc, if my group does play pre-3rd edition, it's almost strictly BECMI.

we normally game from 7-ish to 10/11-ish. i'm usually late since my work goes from 10-7 and i have to take a 30 minute commute home at 7:30

I suppose it's really more the feeling that the designers cared about the customers at that point. The products felt like they were lovingly created and that a lot of effort was put into making something that the fans would enjoy. Now it feels like 4e is about finding new customers, even if it means burning bridges to the old ones. It doesn't feel like they are trying to create something enjoyable, but rather something that sells. They should go hand in hand, but there is a subtle difference to the aim of the product.

I probably shouldn't have said anything. Now this is going to turn into a flamewar.

In a capitalistic economy you must produce what sells. A lot of the people that I know that like playing 2e and even 3e refused to buy a lot of the supplement books. This tells the company that their product isn't selling. This means they need to either makes something that's better, target more people or go out of business. They chose to make something new and while doing so to try and get more people into the game.

I've never understood why a lot of older players that grew up with 1e and 2e get upset when a new edition is made because they did nothing but complain about the on they were playing. Those that were the first to complain about 3e with it's rules problems (grapple for ex) were among the first to attack 4e. 4e was designed to fix all the problems that people were complaining about and when the problem is fixed people start complaining about the fix. I'm just tired of a lot of people complaining about everything.

You can only win and lose, there is no win-win or lose-lose scenario when it comes to an established company like WotC or TSR producing a roleplaying game. Even Kenzer seems to do pretty well still with Hackmaster even to this day, though it will never outsell D&D even though its closer to D&D's origin than 3x or 4e ever will be.

The big problem is that some people want different things, but as a mob they don't know how to articulate their wants. I still play 3.5, play Saga edition, haven't played 4e but have read the books, and haven't played 2e since 96. I don't really play 3.5, I play the game that is houseruled with fixes and things. I noticed I would be doing the same thing with 4e because I'm not happy with the way somethings turned out there. The game I end up running has become a frankenstein's monster of d20 rules amalgamation. I prefer it this way, and my group doesn't seem to mind as long as I tell them what I'm thinking or bring them in on the design process.

That's not everyone's solution, but it works great for me!

Yeah, good ol' TSR loved you and cared nothing of profit. They only charged money for the books to cover overhead, but otherwise they'd give em to you for free because they know that the important thing is to keep the spirit of the hobby alive in the players, the rightful owners to D&D!

But that evil old WotC. Big evil corperation. All they care about is money! It's not like they listened to tons of fans who disliked the previous editions and asked for a change. They alienated EVERBODY! Everyone knows that only 12 year old WoW addicts like 4E.

My dad bought most of the books. It was only towards the end of 3e when they were blatantly making money grabs (rules compendium? :uh-huh that we started regretting it. And, for that matter, I got into D&D a few months before 3e came out. I really liked 2e, but the transition to 3e was painless.

I'm not saying that. TSR definitely had it's screw ups, and, like any other business, they were trying to make a profit. I think they understood better the concept of keeping your standby customers happy to have a stable business. Maybe it didn't do much to promote growth, but I think that a smart business would do well to make an effort to retain old customers.

Furthermore, I don't think that WotC is an evil corporation. For one, I actually liked 3e quite a lot, and WotC put it out. They also happened to be owned by Hasbro for most of that time, so I'm not saying that Hasbro is evil either. I think that the problem is that WotC's sales from 3e weren't satisfactory to Hasbro because Hasbro is a big company. The small standby fanbase of TSR would not be worth Hasbro's while, so they wanted to attract new customers. The problem is that they tried a little too hard to get those new customers and didn't put enough effort into throwing a bone to the old fans. They wanted new and flashy to try to attract as man new customers as possible, but new and flashy just doesn't cut it for some older fans. If they can grow their fanbase enough with new and flashy, then I applaud them for having the guts to make that move and succeed. I just am not happy with what they have created.

Disclaimer: These are just my opinions, so take things like my use of "new and flashy" with a grain of salt. I'm aware that most of the people who frequent this forum like 4e and I'm not trying to personally insult anyone's tastes.

Look, I don't know why that skank showed up. I had to FORCE her to leave three times. AND IT WAS NOT A STALKER DAY PARTY! I just invited friends and family overto have a party, and we got a bit wild. Y'know, loud music, excessive drinking, CoC violating antics and jokes. You shoulda been there, man. It was FUN! (I was actually at a party like this. Tons of fun.)

Told you it was a wild party. then there was the "Burning Cinder Fury of The Crimson Chaos Fire" AKA the Burning Cheerio. (my bro's chili)

I'm not mexican. I'm more used to mild dishes, since my mom constantly makes vietnamese food, and NEVER makes any of the spicy stuff. In the off chance that she does, it has barely any spices.

Most of the people at the party, even some MEXICANS could not even handle one bowl of that chili. I wolfed down three. No one else was crazy enough to try that, or able to handle it as well.
