| #2mock26Feb 12, 2011 1:11:43 | As for why they are remaking this movie, I imagine that it is because one of the writers at the studio say it in the discount bin at Best Buy. As for why 3D, I am convinced that the recent spat of 3D movies is a conspiracy between the studios and the TV manufacturers to push this whole 3D TV fad. |
| #3ADHadhFeb 12, 2011 5:25:23 | New Conan, new Red Sonja... life is good. Except for 3D. It kind of forces certain shots and angles and it doesn't look as good in live action movies as it does in animation. But hey, that's not some kind of artistic 5 hour long silent movie about an old lady feeding her cat as a metaphor of lesbian love, that's CONAN the BARBARIAN. |
| #4pluisjenFeb 12, 2011 6:06:31 | 3D is really annoying. There's just a few movies out there that really pull it off, and the others are just a nuisance to watch. I wish they'd use it because it improves the movie rather then "because" and "we can charge more for it in the cinema". |
| #5mock26Feb 12, 2011 7:21:01 | 3D is really annoying. There's just a few movies out there that really pull it off, and the others are just a nuisance to watch. I wish they'd use it because it improves the movie rather then "because" and "we can charge more for it in the cinema". I once asked if I could juse my old glasses from a previous movie and avoid the $5 3D fee, and I was told, "The glasses are free. You are paying for the 3D experience." |
| #6pluisjenFeb 12, 2011 7:33:37 | Heh, yeah that sucks. They used to do that here as well, but for some reason they stopped... now you can re-use old glasses if you have them, and you don't pay the extra charge if you do. But that still doesn't deal with the fact that I'd rather see the movie in 2d, because it's better on the eyes. Once heard someone come up with the idea to make 2d glasses for the movies, it shouldn't be too hard I think to make them, and they should technically work... |
| #7bone_nagaFeb 12, 2011 10:03:43 | 3D is really annoying. There's just a few movies out there that really pull it off, and the others are just a nuisance to watch. I wish they'd use it because it improves the movie rather then "because" and "we can charge more for it in the cinema". Yeah. Most of the time I actually prefer NOT to see the 3D version of the movie. I was kind of pissed off when I wanted to see the latest Narnia movie and found out the theater nearby ONLY had it in 3D. It added absolutely nothing to the movie and the glasses are annoying as hell. |
| #8jetshieldFeb 12, 2011 11:06:04 | 3D glasses are irritating, especially for those of us who already wear glasses. It's extremely rare that 3D effects are used to actually highten the story. I imagine the typical conversation goes like this: "We haven't had anything jump out at the audience in almost 5 minutes. We need to fix that." "It wouldn't make sense at this point in the story. We can work something in logically at about 8 minutes, if you insist." "**** the story! Make something fly at the audience NOW or you're fired!" *movie releases* Me: "How did we go from 'Daddy, I missed you.' to a dragon fly-by in a movie about historical events?" *credits role* Dumb kids in audience: "That was cool! Did you see the way that dragon came down and burned up all of Custer's men? Hah! I bet he didn't see that coming." |
| #9homicidal_squirrelFeb 12, 2011 16:28:47 | Yeah, 3D effects aren't used to make a better movie, just to distract you from how bad the movie actually is. Everytime I see a ew movie coming out in 3D i automatically think "this is going to suck..." I still don't see how 3D is going to do anything to make this a good movie. If the script sucks, the 3D effects aren't going to save the movie. By the way, did anyone notice that this remake doesn't have Thulsa Doom? WTF? |
| #10pluisjenFeb 12, 2011 16:53:26 | The only thing I'm kinda interested in seeing in 3D is Tron Legacy, because that looks awesome and made for it. But I don't think my girlfriend wants to watch and I don't have the time either, so I'll probably have to skip it ![]() |
| #11mock26Feb 13, 2011 0:15:58 | 3D glasses are irritating, especially for those of us who already wear glasses. I kind of disagree. I think that in some movies, such as Avatar, that the 3D works very well because it is just part of the film. I think that where 3D suck is when the directors/writers feel that they have to do some "in your face" special effects just because the movie is 3D. |
| #12homicidal_squirrelFeb 13, 2011 9:10:04 | I didn't even bother with the 3D version of avater. 3D doesn't add anything to the story. Sure, it looks pretty ans all, but there was no significant difference betwenn the 3D and the 2D versions. As for Conan... 3D seems like a gimick. |
| #13bone_nagaFeb 13, 2011 9:30:53 | I saw both the 3D and regular versions of Avatar. While it was certainly better done than a lot of 3D movies, it didn't add anything to the experience and I came away a little disappointed (this was the first 3D movie I had seen since I was a little kid and not only was I not impressed but I preferred non-3D). |
| #14CCSFeb 13, 2011 15:17:25 |
Yeah, I can see that to a point. As well as some colusion with the theatre chains to jack up tkt prices. But a while back I read an article where they discussed how 3d actually cut down on the amount of piracy. That's why you see it done on so many of the action & animated movies. Overall it's not actually aimed at making better movies, just harder to copy ones. Is it working? I don't know. The effect 3D has on me though? I avoid seeing the 3D versions of most things. Wich means I've largely switched wich local theatre I go to most. And if something comes to my area only in the 3d format? Then I'll just skip it. I'll see the 2d version in a few months when it comes out on DVD/BluRay from NetFlix.... Or I'll wait even longer & eventually see it on one of umpteen cable channels that I'm already paying for. |
| #15homicidal_squirrelFeb 13, 2011 17:19:07 | But a while back I read an article where they discussed how 3d actually cut down on the amount of piracy. That's why you see it done on so many of the action & animated movies. I higly doubt that has anything to do with why they are making 3D movies. If they wanted to cut down on the pirating of movies they wouldn't be making 2D versions of the movies that are released in theaters at the same time as the 3D version. It defeats the purpose. You may not be able to pirate the 3D effect, but you have the 2D version available in the screen next door. I think it has more to do with charging more for a movie theater ticket. Most people don't know this, but the theaters make very little money off of the ticket sales. They make between about 10 to 25 cents... maybe a little more... from each ticket sold. The longer the movie is out in theaters, the more money that a theater can make from a ticket. That is also why they charge you so much for any food or drinks you buy in a theater. Also, there is probably something to the whole "3D conspiracy between TV manufacturures and movie production companies." The studios get to make more money on each DVD that has a 3D feature, and it requires a 3D capable TV to see this. |
| #16Nai_CalusFeb 14, 2011 3:11:47 | 3D can screw itself because I have no depth perception and my brain does not resolve the input from my eyes correctly. Hence the lack of depth perception. Basically my brain is like 'Screw you, left eye. I don't like you, I'm not listening to you' and mostly ignores the input from it. My right eye is fine, 20/20 actually. The left is like 20/100 and can't be improved by glasses more than an utterly insignificant amount. 3D will never be of any use to me. So this new trend annoys me, sucks, and can go away. |
| #17EscefFeb 14, 2011 5:58:56 | Yeah, 3D effects aren't used to make a better movie, just to distract you from how bad the movie actually is. Everytime I see a ew movie coming out in 3D i automatically think "this is going to suck..." Tron Lagacy did something interesting with the 3D: they pulled The Wizard of Oz. The "real world" sections of the movie were 2D, while the sections of the movie taking place in "the Grid" were 3D. Honestly, a lot of the arguements I hear against 3D sound really interesting if you replace "3D" with "color" or "talky". Just sayin'. As for Thulsa Doom, he was not originally a Conan villian. He was originally a villian from one of Howard's Kull the Conquerer stories. |
| #18boraxeFeb 14, 2011 9:00:48 | Honestly, a lot of the arguements I hear against 3D sound really interesting if you replace "3D" with "color" or "talky". Just sayin'. But those argument are not the correct ones. The reason 3D films are bad is 3D doesn't add anything substantive to the experience (Avatar was, by far, the best application of 3D in cinema to date and I found it no more immersive or impressive than the normal 2D version), it isn't actually 3D but rather an illusion of parallax (relative movement of distinct 2D planes), by dint of the technology required the picture is invariably darker and murkier than 2D films, and 3D doesn't actually work correctly with the human optical focal length (trying to look "through" the screen "into" the film is more like looking at a Magic Eye picture than an actual object or dimensional space). As to Conan, I've no problem with remaking it. Nostalgia aside the original film wasn't actually that great, and the sequel was pretty dire. Done well, and taking the material seriously (a la Lord of the Rings), I welcome, nay embrace, the idea of a new Conan reboot. |
| #19zombie_babiesFeb 14, 2011 9:18:50 | I actually really like the first Conan movie. Honestly. And it's not just nostalgia this time - I've seen the movie likely hundreds of times and the last time was less than a year ago and I still enjoyed it. That said, the only thing that bothers me about this is the 3d thing. Unless it's done like it was in Avatar, odds are that it'll be intrusive and take you out of the film. And I don't see it being what I like to call 'passive' 3d like Avatar used. Just not the same style of film. So yeah, movie ok but 3d bad. I'd have rather they had Thulsa Doom to be more like the original movie, but whatever. I have no problem with Jason Momoa as Conan, though. I liked him in Atlantis and I think he can pull it off well enough. And all that said, I really don't care cuz the odds are very, very against me seein' it when it comes out. |
| #20EscefFeb 14, 2011 9:21:24 | Probably the best anti-3D argument I've ever hear was from my older bro. He has an eye problem that makes it pretty much impossible for him to perceive the false 3rd dimension, it even gives him a headache when he tries to watch 3D movies. |
| #21pluisjenFeb 14, 2011 10:18:36 | Honestly, a lot of the arguements I hear against 3D sound really interesting if you replace "3D" with "color" or "talky". Just sayin'. I wouldn't be surprised if the first color movies and talky movies used their respective words as a "look, we're new!" rather then a way to actually enhance the concept of the movies as well. In a few years, moviemakers will probably learn to actually use 3d for something useful instead of as a gimmick. Then it'll become interesting, just like movies in color and with sound are now better then their silent/black-white counterparts. Unless of course someone actually bothers to use the idea of a movie not having sound or being in black and white (like Sin City) to enhance the movie... Probably the best anti-3D argument I've ever hear was from my older bro. He has an eye problem that makes it pretty much impossible for him to perceive the false 3rd dimension, it even gives him a headache when he tries to watch 3D movies. I'm betting the colorblind and the deaf had those same arguments years ago... I'm afraid your brother will just have to make due with the new technology and see if he can get some 2d glasses, or wait for the 2d version |
| #22ADHadhFeb 14, 2011 11:46:02 | About colour: pretty much, yeah; that's the reason why Dorothy's slippers were ruby in the movie instead of original silver or why early colour cartoons looke like this one. |
| #23jesse.two.coinsFeb 14, 2011 12:38:20 | its trendy to pop the lenses out of 3D glasses and wear the frames |
| #24Reg06Feb 14, 2011 12:41:31 | No anything where I have to remove my glasses to put on diferent glasses that do not correct my vision sucks. 3d does nothing but give me a headache... Have you tried putting the 3d glasses over your normal glasses? It's what I do, and I'm not bothered by it. |
| #25zombie_babiesFeb 14, 2011 12:44:19 | I have a friend that has major depth perception issues that also finds the new style 3d impossible to view. Just doesn't work. |
| #26EscherEnigmaFeb 14, 2011 12:47:54 | IIRC, my mother can view them just fine, but it'll easily give her motion sickness. 'pparently she saw 3D Avatar in the theater and she had to leave early on account of the action sequences making her physically ill. |
| #27iqwinnFeb 14, 2011 19:21:57 | About colour: pretty much, yeah; that's the reason why Dorothy's slippers were ruby in the movie instead of original silver or why early colour cartoons looke like this one. That's fantastic in terms of technique. Every single frame is hand-drawn. I can't imagine how much time that takes. |
| #28toastedamphibianFeb 14, 2011 20:27:14 | Two pedaled bikes are stupid. What the hell am I supposed to do with two pedals? I only have one leg damnit! Not cool. They should stop makeing them. |

| #32ADHadhFeb 15, 2011 10:42:11 | Why do they make dentures? I mean, I have all of my teeth. Pointless. Missed one: 3D movies are purely entertainment; dentures help surviving. | #33zombie_babiesFeb 15, 2011 11:38:48 | Missed one: 3D movies are purely entertainment; dentures help surviving. Nah, the point was to further demonstrate the wrongheadedness of the 'but it doesn't work for me!' reasoning for hating something by going with a silly extreme. You don't need dentures to survive, either. People have been around a lot longer than dentures, you know. And now we have stuff like blenders. ![]() |

Alien isn't the best movie ever, Aliens is. And don't worry, they're not remaking it. Ridley Scott was working on a prequel but the latest buzz is instead now working that material into a new TV series unrelated to the Alien universe. Besides, nothing could do more damage to the Alien legacy than Alien 3, Alien Ressurection, and the AvP films. |

I'm betting the colorblind and the deaf had those same arguments years ago... I'm afraid your brother will just have to make due with the new technology and see if he can get some 2d glasses, or wait for the 2d version |

| #63jesse.two.coinsFeb 14, 2011 12:38:20 | its trendy to pop the lenses out of 3D glasses and wear the frames |
| #64Reg06Feb 14, 2011 12:41:31 | No anything where I have to remove my glasses to put on diferent glasses that do not correct my vision sucks. 3d does nothing but give me a headache... Have you tried putting the 3d glasses over your normal glasses? It's what I do, and I'm not bothered by it. |
| #65zombie_babiesFeb 14, 2011 12:44:19 | I have a friend that has major depth perception issues that also finds the new style 3d impossible to view. Just doesn't work. |
| #66EscherEnigmaFeb 14, 2011 12:47:54 | IIRC, my mother can view them just fine, but it'll easily give her motion sickness. 'pparently she saw 3D Avatar in the theater and she had to leave early on account of the action sequences making her physically ill. |

That's fantastic in terms of technique. Every single frame is hand-drawn. I can't imagine how much time that takes. |
| #68toastedamphibianFeb 14, 2011 20:27:14 | Two pedaled bikes are stupid. What the hell am I supposed to do with two pedals? I only have one leg damnit! Not cool. They should stop makeing them. |
| #69homicidal_squirrelFeb 14, 2011 20:41:28 | Don't forget handle bars. they are horrible. I have no arm. They are useless. |
| #70toastedamphibianFeb 14, 2011 21:01:54 | Don't forget handle bars. they are horrible. I have no arm. They are useless. Damn straight! If they can't make a product that is equally usefull to me and everyone I know of, they should just shut up and go to hell. |
| #71zombie_babiesFeb 15, 2011 8:29:30 | Why do they make dentures? I mean, I have all of my teeth. Pointless. |
| #72ADHadhFeb 15, 2011 10:42:11 | Why do they make dentures? I mean, I have all of my teeth. Pointless. Missed one: 3D movies are purely entertainment; dentures help surviving. BTW., if you don't like remakes, apparently you can blame Lucas for this one as well: michaelcrichlow.deviantart.com/journal/3... |
| #73zombie_babiesFeb 15, 2011 11:38:48 | Missed one: 3D movies are purely entertainment; dentures help surviving. Nah, the point was to further demonstrate the wrongheadedness of the 'but it doesn't work for me!' reasoning for hating something by going with a silly extreme. You don't need dentures to survive, either. People have been around a lot longer than dentures, you know. And now we have stuff like blenders. ![]() |
| #74ADHadhFeb 15, 2011 12:36:44 | (...)People have been around a lot longer than dentures, you know. Yes; many of them died from teeth-related illnesses ![]() |

| #77boraxeFeb 16, 2011 8:23:33 | That link said they are re-making ALIEN??? Wikileaks Task Force??? What a bucket of slop. Nothing like ruining the best movie ever made. |
