| #1ostrakonFeb 21, 2009 20:43:04 | This is probably a weird place to be asking for advice about JRPGs, but I figure playing JRPGs got me into pen-and-paper RPGs, so maybe that goes for a few of you too. I started playing SMT games with Persona 3 after it got hyped so much online, and I loved every minute of it. Any given battle had a significant chance of ending in a game over, the characters were rich and had great voice acting, the story had deep roots in ancient mythology: it was a paradise for me, jaded by JRPGs that focused more on presentation for substance. From there I got Persona 4, Nocturne, and the first Devil Summoner, games that are equally fantastic. I'm quickly approaching the end of Nocturne, and I've been considering Digital Devil Saga. I've found Nocturne's story to be rather dry (at least until each character starting pursuing their Reasons), and I heard DDS's story is a vast improvement if you consider both parts at once. Most of the reviews I've read say "Great story, 'old-school' gameplay" or "Great story ruined by crappy gameplay", which makes me think it's a great story with the typical SMT/Atlus grind, which sounds right up my alley. Plus, there's voice acting, which should add a bit of atmosphere to the game compared to Nocturne. So, SMT fans, what is your opinion of the DDS games? |
