Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs

I live in a fairly populated area and had stopped for gas. Leaning against the car while the tank filled up I found myself looking at a strange scene. There was the freeway off-ramp, the corner of the gas station lot, a street lamp, and the remains of what was once a payphone. Beyond that was a rolling hill on the other side of the freeway and the clear blue sky. I couldn't figure out what made it look so strange until I moved my head just a little bit and caught the AM/PM mini-mart in my field of vision. There was the big sign advertising hot dogs, corn dogs, and impossibly huge sodas. Look back, and it's strange again. That's when it hit me. For being in a fairly populated area, that one angle contained absolutely no advertisements!

I spent the rest of my delivery runs noticing how many advertisements we are bombarded with no matter where we look. Right now I'm looking at a website with a product name on it and a monitor proclaiming CTX as it's brand name. I turn in my chair and I see a stapler with "PaperPro" written on the side. I look left and there's the phone book with its paid advertising all over the cover and spine. I look right and there's the logo for my own workplace as well as a keychain with "Ace Hardware" advertised on it. I get into my delivery car and there's a big silver H reminding that I'm driving a Honda. License plates advertise states, restaurant names abound, you pretty much can't look anywhere without seeing a brand name plastered somewhere.

I just found it funny that I would find a scene without an advertisement to be strange. I guess people are pretty much numbed to it.

Where do you live?  I can find a view free from advertisement quite easily.  Then again, I'm in rural New Mexico.  Seriously, I can be out of town and on an open dirt road in the middle of nowhere within five minutes.

I can also get to the place where they're training army soldiers how to deal with roadside bombs within five minutes, but that's 'cause I'm at Tech, not because it's New Mexico.

Leela: Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?"
Fry: Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses, and milk cartons, and t-shirts, and bananas, and written on the sky…

Yeah, when I lived in rural Arizona it was easy to not see any ads anywhere. Now I'm in central California near (in the galactic sense) Sacramento and its pretty hard not to see something being advertised somewhere. Ah, to see views without labels again!

I love where I live, I have to go a few miles before I see any kind of advertising.

Or just go online. Watch TV, listen to the radio, if you ride a bike and there's a logo on it, that logo isn't for you. It's for people who see the bike. "Hey, you! You like the way this bike looks, eh? Well, here's who made it. Go and get one!" We're surrounded! Run for the hills!

Thank the Deities I moved too a small town. There are exactly two signs in the entirety of this town; one is an ad for a local sweet shop, the other is a biblical quote. My sympathies, Shiftkitty.

I don't watch TV, listen to the radio, or ride a bike.

I do go online.

Not me! I refuse to wear brand names, and if I do, they have to be non-exposure brand names. I refuse to be a walking corporate showcase. Excellent.

I'm no brand who-ah, but right now my shirts say Urban Pipeline, my pants say the same, my shoes say Skechers and my sunglasses say Oakley (yeah, I'm ol' school).  I'm just tryin' to wear stuff I don't hate.  I'm not intentionally promoting anything.  And yet, I am.  And I pay them for the privilege.  Anyhoo, the point is that it's really hard to escape this stuff - no matter the size of your town or where you live.  Hell, when I'm literally sitting in a tree hunting, my bow says Bob Lee, my rangefinder says Leupold, my grunt call says Primos, my bibs say Cabelas, my jacket may say the same or Remington, my face mask says Scent Lock and on and on.  It's everywhere man.  Everywhere.

Um... actually... nope.  Well, okay, I have a small leather patch on my ass that says "Levi", but my shirt is slogan free, and my boots only have the maker's logo on the inside (cowboy boots, ya know).  And my belt?  logo's on the inside of the belt.

So... yeah, I'd need to use a mirror to stare at my own ass to see a logo on myself.  And, as I'm a computer science nerd, and thus a vampire, mirrors don't really cooperate with me.

Ah, but the struggle can be fun too.  The writhing, the saying "no" when the grin and twinkle in their eye says and pressure of their [message redacted].

... uh, okay, maybe I crossed a line there.  Damn, this adapting to the SO working in the morning is gonna suck if that's the schedule he ends up with...

Nah, if I'm not at work my shirt isn't tucked in, and if I'm at work I'm sitting down.  That and, ya know, the class of people that are (A) allowed to stare at my ass and (B) want to stare at my ass contains only one person, and he'd much rather not see the pants there.

If that don't work, look at the monitor these pretty words is appearin' on.  Mine says HP.  ;)

Ah, but I was contesting the claim that I was a walking billboard, not that I don't use logo-bearing products.

Poor ZB.  Sounds like you need a day off.

... and that just reminded me of a comic1.

1You were warned: original at [link], but it's a man on the phone listening to his partner on the other end.  "I'll be getting off work by five and getting off the bus by six so you and I can get off by seven before getting off to the movies by eight"2

Oh please, people you want to stare at your ass is not the same as people who are allowed to stare at your ass. Everyone is allowed to stare at your ass. The recurrence of a certain picture suggests the set of people who want to stare at your ass is also larger than one.

I protest!  While I will admit that there's a possibility that more then one person wants to stare at my ass, the only person I've given persmission is the SO.  Just 'cause no one cares about permission means nothing.

And I didn't break the link, you're just not using it right.

Having your express permission and being allowed are not the same thing. You never gave me permission to eat bacon, but that does not mean I am not allowed to eat bacon. Unless it was your bacon. While it may be your ass, the light reflected off of it or any fascimilies of it is communal property, free for the taking.

I'm nearly immune to advertising, fortunatly. Nothing good comes from it.

Whenever I see an ad, I can just envision a company, patting itself on the back, saying, "aren't we great?" and it just makes me... blegh.

So while I probably have a few dozen brands around the house, I wouldn't be able to name more then a few from the top of my head. And I'd like to keep it that way.

I've also stopped watching TV because the amount of ads just drives me up the wall Undecided

Also, glad to see that I'm brand free in my clothing. The only thing that has a brand tag are my shoes (because I destroy most of them in a month or so, so I have really tough ones) but that's hidden under the bottom of my pants.

If you're talking about commercials, go with DVR or DVDs (or Blu-rays if you're fancy).

If you're talking about advertisement during shows, I can't help you there.

On the other hand, familiar products visible in the scene add to the reality. However, when an actor places a big-ass carton of Winstons on the table in such a manner that the product takes up almost half of the screen, or is always careful to hold the Coke or Pepsi can so the logo isn't covered up by his hand, that's just crass.

However, I think it was Star Trek 4 where the product placement was pretty funny. Chekov and Uhura (I think it was) were trying to find somthing nuclear (been awhile since I've see the movie) and as the scene is pasted on the screen, there's a big "Can't find it? Try the Yellow Pages" ad right behind them.

"Drowning Mona" involved a big ad for Yugos, i.e. the whole movie, but it kind of made the movie that much goofier.

Meh, make a drinking game out of it. Any time there's blatant product placement, take a shot.

*WARNING* Do not try this in Michael Bay's transformers! You will die. On the plus side, the movie will be much more enjoyable until the volume of alcohol in your bloodsteam starts to overtake the volume of blood.

If you're playing drinking games - for any reason - you're doin' it wrong.  Unlike sex, there are all sorts of wrong reasons to drink.

Perhaps I was unclear. If you're sitting at home, alone, doing nothing, then yeah, drinking games are a bad idea. During a party? Meh, why not? So long as everyone knows when to quit, I don't see a reason not to.

I wouldn't know.  Pretty much all my "drinking to get drunk" experiences have involved other people putting alcohol in front of me and me drinking it.  And then them being surprised at how well I'm able to sit on a stool without falling over when they realize just how drunk I am.

I'm horrible when drunk, but then I hate being drunk almost as much as I hate other people that are drunk, so yeah.

Also I noticed various references to the real world in Kick-Ass and they bothered me. I don't know why, but with each of I felt a moment of "ugh, why??!!" or something that me out of the movie for a few seconds.

With a logo or something like that, it doesn't bother me (like I mentioned before; ad-immunity) but in there they were just... annoying.

I've never been Totally Hammered so I don't know how I act drunk. I imagine it's like my typical behavior though. Just more exaggerated in my movements and stuff.
