I'm annoyed how blantantly overpowered Snake is. His tilts do around 20 damage, more than most characters' smashes. I think Konami must have paid Sakurai a lot of money to make him that good or something.

Fox is a cool character. I can't believe that they had Falco be a clone to Fox.

Ness is an okay character. He's has his advantages and his disadvantages.

Metaknight looks at that and laughs. Big hits are nice, but 1-combo KO's are better.

What do you guys think about Brawl+? I prefer normal Brawl with Metaknight taken out, but I've heard good things about it.

I never really liked Fox. At all.

You know how the 3-D Zelda games always had one of those sword reflection fights? A friend and I used Green Shells to do it in Brawl. It was fun, but Link has a huge edge because the G-dorf is {expletive of your choice}-ing slow.

Ike's recovery move is forward-B. I will never call Aether a recovery move.
#13

Jun 27, 2009 19:10:04
I think that's a balance issue, Ike is a beast and giving him a solid recovery makes him even better (i.e. "broken")

But Forward-B is crazy good at recovery.
#15

Jun 27, 2009 19:29:03
True, but when you ask the average Joe how to do a recovery, they'll usually say "Up B"; I've seen alot of casual player's (Nintendo's core demographic) ignore his "good" recovery because they don't think of using it as one.
#16

awestriker

Jun 27, 2009 20:32:21
Technically, Up+B is usually a recovery move. Aether is still useful as one situationally, it's just that Quick Draw is better.

The weird thing about FE9&10 is that Ike isn't a Lord like every other main character in the series (save Micaiah, who is named after an obscure Old Testament character).

"Lord" by virtue of the fact that he's the main character (and the fact that he became a noble after FE9, only to get tired of court life and restart the Greil Mercenaries), but not as his class (Merc/Hero/Vanguard).

Yes, but that seems like an oversight of the developers. Snake is just, as I said, blatantly overpowered.

And why is Ike a ranger? He doesn't use bows, and he only has one weapon. He also doesn't seem to be a tracker or a wilderness specialist... And vanguard sounds really... not-epic.

*Deep Breath* NO ITEMS. FOX ONLY. FINAL DESTINATION!!

Ugh. I can't imagine playing that more than once. Items bring about one third of the fun in Smash Bros., and Final Destination is as boring as it gets. If you are going to limit things to just one stage, Battlefield is closer to the pure Smash Bros. experience (though I prefer the wide variety). Finally, while Fox is one of my favorite characters since the original, I would go crazy playing nothing but him.

I really need to play more Brawl.

I like to play Ice Climbers. Just cause it confuses the hell out of people.

Snake is overpowered in a brawl, because he can efficiently blast people from a distance with impunity. I think SSBB has a big problem with people being able to keep distance, and taht is actually the most effective strategy. Waiting for people to come to you is generally how people win fights. It's to your advantage because they are using the effort to get to you, and thus don't have as much strength or control to hit you as you do to hit them. Plus if they don't come after you, they will simply beat each other up. This is especially bad for characters with no shooting ability verse those that do. I've played online matches where there were 4 people, 2 decided to gang up on snake (me included) and he would win consistently. He wasnt talaneted, he just ran and shot, and when we stopped to take care of ther other guy fighting, he would blast all 3 of us out of the park! And it's not as if Snake is weak at hand to hand either! He can run through and away from people real easily. Ike is ridiculous, but at least you have to get pretty damn CLOSE to the guy. Snake doesn't. Not to mention he drops remote bombs which are far more powerful than other characters bombs and not really harder to use (in some cases easier).

In reality, Snake would snap Marios neck, slit Pikachu's throat and blow up Donkey Kong with no problem, but that doesn't work in a game that needs balance like this.

I only played SSBM, so I'll just talk about that. My preferred characters were Link, Young Link, Marth, and Roy. Mainly Roy and Link though, because they're still fast (enough) and they can take more of a beating, and they also have better reach.

My basic strategy as Link/Young Link was to pepper the enemy with arrows when they were far away, then toss bombs when they got to mid range, then start letting loose some bad-ass swordplay.

My strategy for Marth and Roy was to just get right up in there, and get a really long chain attack (using side B), and then when I knock 'em in the air, hit them with up B, then as they try to get up (after they hit the floor), keep smacking them with B.

That is a pretty bold claim. Snake is from a relatively realistic setting, and is more or less just an exceptional regular human being. Furthermore, he relies on heavy artillery like Stinger Missiles to fight large opponents. Mario regularly fights twisted monstrosities 10 times his own size with his bare hands. Just look at Mario's jumping ability and imagine how much lower body strength it takes to pull that off. As for Pikachu, if Snake was smart he would try to snipe it at long range, since being zapped by lightning isn't good for his health.

As for the Vyse suggestion, it would be cool. It is sadly unlikely, since Skies of Arcadia is a bit old and was never as well known as other properties, but I would like to see it. At the very least, we could get a stage where you fight on the deck of an airship.

Yep. In the original SSB almost nobody had good range. It was a weak weapon/attack but could be used to annoy people. In SSBB there are several characters that have very strong ranged attacks and so they can sit on the other side of the level and kill everyone without having to do jack. Because of this one can no longer reasonable do the waiting tactic in SSBB with fox. Everyone will just blast you from a distance. In the original there was not this sort of problem because everyone was at some point forced to get into melee combat.

In reality, Snake would snap Marios neck, slit Pikachu's throat and blow up Donkey Kong with no problem, but that doesn't work in a game that needs balance like this.

Me personally I think it would be the other way around.

Sounds more like a Final Fantasy stage. What I wanted was Mega Man (would be hard to pull off, as there are like seven of them.) MegaMan "Rock" Volnutt from Legends would probably be used due to his inclusion in Namco X Capcom and Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom.

I just realized something:

I like Lucario. His Down- B move is awesome when you need a mix of both offense and defense.

Lucario has an advantage over virtually every stage in Brawl with his Down- B move! He's THAT awesome!

Sonic's okay. His recovery is without question perfect. The ironic thing is that he is rated as the Disaster Master in my Wii system (Character with the most Self- Destructs). Cursed Bunny Ears... :raincloud

If we could only have one sword-fighter in the next game, I say take out either Marth or Ike, and replace with Lyn. Crono... just... annoys me. I've never really liked how his character looks, and well... he just seemed so irrelevant in Chrono Trigger. It was all the other characters who did the talking, making it seem like the story was about them, not Crono. I suppose that doesn't matter for a game like Super Smash Bros. But I just don't like him all that much (for no good reason :P ) Plus, we need more female characters.

And Lucario's Down-B has one big weakness. The grab!

Nintendo has plenty of female characters in their Archives, so the next SSB game (if there is one) can have more female characters.

It's just that SSB is more aimed at the more serious gamer (I hate to be sexist here, but men tend to be more hardcore gamers than women, but I'll bet that there may be some women gamers that would disagree with me).

First: Super Smash Bros. doesn't exclusively appeal to "hardcore" gamers. In fact, it's casual nature is what appeals to so many of it's players.

Second: Many males want more female characters in the game, not just female gamers.

I like Xianghua the most especially in SC 3. Most of her attacks can dodge something so you're being defensive and offensive at the same time. And usually if I hit opponent first then they'll be dead before they can even hit the ground. When I use her it's kind of like a kill me before I can hit you kind of competition. :D

I must step in hear to defend the jigglemeister. What is good about Jigglypuff, you ask? "POUND, POUND, AHAHAHA POUND!!!!", I scream at you manically. Don't underestimate the move, it takes preference over almost every other attack in the game and also hits through the majority of those. And jiggylpuff is actually a sneak attack character. Think about it.

And Lucario's Down-B has one big weakness. The grab!

There are quite a few more weaknesses to this move...wait, time for a rant.

I'll start off by saying that I absolutely hate Lucario. Mostly because I can't imagine who really wanted that character in the game, but also because its specials are so...weak.

Up B- Why didn't they just make it like Mewtwo's teleport? It takes too long to execute in addition to not causing damage. You can curve your path, I guess, for what that's worth...if it's worth anything I haven't found it yet.

B-Why, oh why can I cancel this move out with any other attack when it is at full blast?

Over B- okay, I actually like this one.

Down B- yay a counter!... wait, except it gives the opponent just enough time to shield or dodge your counter, is worthless in aerial clashes, and leaves you completely vulnerable for 3 whole seconds after.

...and while I'm on a tear: damn you, Nintendo! Give falco his own specials!

On the subject of Metaknight: He's gross in a one on one duel, but I find he's way too light for a 4 player game. All the incidental bits of damage you take in a big fight really add up when people can kill you at 70%. The easiest way you're going to win in that situation is to avoid, avoid, avoid, and that's a pretty lame way to play. I'm not saying it can't be done. It's just difficult. Also, the tornado makes me cry, and I refuse to play against metaknight as someone without a ranged attack.

Now, as for characters I'd like to see included: I'd love it if they upgraded Shadow from the Sonic series from assist trophy to full-fledged character. Sure, he started out as a Sonic clone back in Sonic Adventure 2 (moveset-wise, not storyline-wise), but since then he's gotten quite a few of his own moves, primarily energy blasts and teleports. his forward-B could be the Chaos Spear, down-B could be a spin dash like Sonic's, and neutral-B could be a homing attack, again like Sonic's. As for up-B, probably a teleport of some kind. Plus, they've got two great choices for final smashes; Either Chaos Control (slow everyone else down for 10 seconds) or Chaos Blast (a huge explosion that wipes out pretty much everything around him). Or they could go the lame route and give him Super Shadow.

If there's some killer combo for Meta-Knight, I'm willing to believe you. This explanation is untrue, however. My brother and I have 'relatively equal skill' in that each of us can beat the other some of the time (he's a little better than I am). His Meta-Knight is alright, but far from an auto-win. I suppose you're one of those fighting game "purists" who thinks fighting games can only take place between two characters, require a life bar, and elaborate, ridiculous button combinations to perform special moves that are ultimately foiled by noobs who just mash the controller.

Really, what other genre would you file SSB under? Party games? I guess, maybe?

Check the link. It explains it much better than I can. The only truly even match is Ice Climbers, and even then it depends on their chaingrab.

Yeah, I saw your link, but the 'odds' it gives don't hold water. My brother is a better player than I am by a small (but probably mathematically proveable) margin, and I've beat his Meta-Knight on many, many occasions. If Meta-Knight is broken, it's not due to being generally better than the other characters.

More believeable? Not to me. It's not 'anecdotal' from where I'm sitting (in front of the TV, playing the game). I bought a Wii pretty much for the express purpose of playing this game. My brother and I (and several of his friends) have played a lot of SSSB by now, and none of us favors Meta-Knight in particular (my main is Wolf, my brother's main is usually Ike, and our friend's mains are Snake or Kirby. Furthermore, Meta-Knight, while a good (and cool) character, proves very beatable.

It's just that SSB is more aimed at the more serious gamer.

Sorry, but that's a ridiculous claim. I'd have to dig up the interviews, but I'm pretty sure some of the designers specifically said they weren't as concerned about balance and fairness as most fighting game designers because they wanted the game to be more casual, more whimsical, and less "serious business". The fact that people treat as such is in spite of the designers, not because of them.
I'm not a breast guy. I actually like my (cat)girls flat chested.

Unfortunately, you haven't been playing Brawl for a while, haven't you?

Lucario's strength increases as his damage % goes up. A 999%, he's basically Super Lucario- though a Mr. Saturn would probably kill him easily!

I know we got off the topic of Snake a while back, but although his explosives are powerful, in my opinion he has one major weakness:

Reality.

Although he can still double jump and what have you, Snake is still the character most tied to real-world physics. Basicly, to my mind, his jumps can be described as ass. In a game where a large portion of the characters can fly, and the other chunk has crazy moooooooon jumps, tiny uncontrollable hops are a strike against you.

However, I'm not really one of those people who know much about the nitty-gritty of the game. I mean, I've played the game a ton, and I'm pretty damn good at it. I'm not completely oblivious to the nuances of the game. It's just I can't say off the top of my head anything about "tiers" or which characters are "naturally" better against which other ones. I mean, to my mind all the characters are pretty good if played right.

Except you Wario. You can just die.

One of the things that I look for when choosing a game for SSB is how good is their jump? If a character doesn't have a good jump or can float/fly then I don't like playing with them. There are too many times where not having that good jump has screwed my over.

RE: Sonic

Yeah, he does seem a bit weak but straight up fighting doesn't seem his fighting style anyways. The style that seems to work best with Sonic is one where you quickly move in, make a couple of quick attacks and then get the hell out of the melee.

It actually isn't as bad when you know a few hings, but it sort of sucks that you have to know them. Example, you can recover by using double jump, then the mid air dodge to move you horizontally and then shoot the hookshot after dodging and latch on to a side.

At first I thought Yoshi kinda sucked. Crappy recovery, meh attacks, pretty standard at everything, but not really great at anything. Then I slowly observed his greatest trait:

Absurd flinch resistance.

After watching for a while, I began to notice that occasionally Yoshi will not flinch even when an attack would usually cause a character to. This can be a great advantage.

...And then the edgeguarder K. O.'s you. I know those techniques, but the real trick to recovery isn't just getting to the ledge. It's beating the edgeguarder. Ice Climbers, for instance, have AMAZING recovery due to that, and so does Pit. Link, meanwhile, has...well, his spin attack to get over the edgeguarder, which is quite possible worse than a normal jump.

Pikachu's down B in Brawl is even more of a haven for the craven button masher than it was in Melee. I guess they're trying to make sure all of the good little Pokemon cash machines still know that pikachu is god.

Of course, the situation can easily be remedied by sitting back and just chucking things at the rat, but it's annoying to have to do that.

I was satisfied with the way they tuned down Samus, however. I thought she was just a tad bit too crazy in Melee.

Speaking of item chucking, Sonic is the ultimate character for the item bombardier. I also find he works pretty good with quick single strikes and traveling combos, but I think pretty much 3/4 of my KOs with Sonic have been with items.

Well, I don't quite know what you mean by "hitstun". What I'm talking about is that I have observed occasions when Yoshi will take a hit and will not react at all to it.

Basicly, it's like how Fox's laser doesn't make people flinch, yet does damage. I've seen Yoshi do that to attacks that don't usually have that no-flinch effect.

NOTE: I'm using the term "flinch" because I've seen references to "flinch resistance" on some of the stickers. It's just my assumption that Yoshi might have some "flinch resistance" built in. I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, it might just be me.

Was Yoshi performing attacks when you saw him hit? I know that certain attacks used by heavy-weight characters grant immunity to flinching while they are being executed. For example, Ike can't be flinched while performing Aether. I didn't think Yoshi was in that category though...

Yeah, I'm still a bit suprised about how many "pallate swap" characters there still are. I do think that Brawl made a good effort at actually making the clones different this time. I mean, even look at CF and Ganon. Even though they share specials, otherwise they are completely different. Falcon is impressivly fast, yet Ganon is the slowest character in the game. They also have unique basic move sets and Final Smashes.

I am disappointed that all the Star Fox characters shar the Land Master FS, even if they are slightly different (they range in power, and the more powerful they are the less time they last).

I am putting forward my vote for Kirby & Jigglypuff being 2nd and 3rd best characters in the game. Jiggs can control the stage in a way that even Metaknight cannot if you use her properly. Move eith the jump, and never use the specials. Her mid-airs are the best for cheap shots in the game. If you are good with Jiggs then you can own all. At a Brawl tournament at my school (all hardcore gamers who have never heard the words 'normal difficulty') I won using only Kirby and Jiggs. This was over 20 matches per entrant. It was awesome and they let me take all the sweets. Starbursts FTW!

The problem is that the Ice Climbers and Dedede can chaingrab you into instant K. O.'s. It's kinda hard to be better than that when you can have stage and character counterpicks (and MK barely edges 3D, Snake, and Wario for the top spot because he can deal with all of them, though they're all individually more powerful), so Kirbs and Jigglypuff don't look too good by comparison.

Any character properly utilized can be deadly. It just takes different strategies with each one.

At least I theorize as much. One of the reasons I've been trying with Ice climbers is that I felt they were probably viewed as sort of joke characters so I want to figure out how to make them kick ass.

A) Do that again...and you'd see that literally EVERY competitive Smash board considers Falcon a trainwreck whose matchups are, at best, 60-40 affairs against him, and usually 70-30 trainwrecks...

B) Give you a detailed breakdown of Falcon's moves and compare them to benchmarks of their category.

C) Explain why the concept of no-hitstun is a disaster for him and how his Knee of Justice was destroyed, thus explaining the two main reasons for his massive collapse (that is, the loss of his good aerial game AND his good ability to chain moves)...

D) ...Or just try to get you to trust my judgment, because you'll probably dismiss the proof offhand, in spite of how its pretty obvious how he's nowhere near as good as he was in Melee and Original if you look at his moves and his properties, especially because I've won several ranked tourneys with him in those two games while I've been schooled by Link, of all characters in Brawl.

...So I went with D, because I don't feel like doing any effort if it's not gonna have any good results.

How often does one play 1v1 in SSB? Isn't it usually a battle royal with 4 people most of time? When there are 4 people in the fight then 1v1 matchups are sort of pointless because, for the most part, nobody is fighting 1v1.

Mostly I do 2v2 or 4 ffa.

Or 2v1 if the one guy is good.

Actually, 4-ways tend to degenerate into 1v1 or full-stock K. O. Against bad players, you camp it out and wait for them to kill each other, fighting them one by one when they come. Good players either team up or take you out of the fray with their attacks.

...So yeah, it's pretty much 1v1 with a little extra environmental damage. :P

Well then you're not doing a 4-way cuz you're purposely setting it up as a 1v1. So when using a character that is bad at most 1v1 you're putting yourself in a bad situation by doing this.

I can see the whole "be an ass and don't fight until everyone else is basically dead so that you have the clear advantage with life once it gets down to 1v1" maneuver but it seems to be against the whole point of a 4-way. A 4-way is suppose to be a 4-way. If you only like 1v1 and will only fight as in 1v1's then don't play 4-way. The fun in the 4-way is the randomness and its unpredictability. If you don't like it then don't play that kind of match in the first place.

I really didn't like how Ganondorf is basically just a copy/paste of Cpt. Falcon in melee. He knew magic, and was a skilled swordsman, I don't think he ever really went for the unarmed thing. Really irritates me. Does brawl have characters that are basically copies of others in it?

Because items are luck-based. If I get twenty starmen in a row, I don't need skill to win. Therefore, they don't count, since luck is not a player skill. It's the reason item bombardiers aren't highly regarded at all: if you have to depend on luck to win, you suck.

And I didn't say the fun came from items. I just said change and unpredictability come from items. Fun comes from baiting a moron with a bloody obvious Falcon Punch. :P

Yes, and dice are part of D&D. Does this mean that the fun comes from them? Obviously not! It comes from the RP, the character building, etc. Same thing here.

Um no. To me items are a big part of the game. Both for randomness, fun and for the showing of skill. When playing most everyone has items most all the time. It would seem completely stupid to compare characters without comparing their abilities to use different items and comparing what items they are weak against. Items are a huge part of the game unless one strictly plays with no items.

It's a balance problem, I believe. Seriously, did you see the guy's size? Giving him a sword would be a bit like sticking Sephiroth in. His Masamune woul outrange the other characters so much you could full-stock other characters without taking a single percent of damage. ...Yeah. Because "Get a Hammer, make a mockery of the other three players" is such an esoteric subject.

Seriously, ALL characters are vulnerable to the same items, just to different degrees. A lightweight is obviously gonna fly further away if you launch an item at them than a heavyweight, but that's about the only difference. If you take movesets into account (like Reflector), you can just discard certain items against certain characters, which is also pretty obvious.

Seriously, items are okay and all, but I'll repeat: luck does not count for a character's worth. So they're pointless in a comparison, besides "Sonic and Falcon rely on items because their moves suck" or something like that.

Make the attacks slower, and make it to where there is a slight pause so that way you have a chance of getting close and giving him a beating, and the magic would simply work as ranged attacks, kinda like Samus' missiles or power blast.

And even if the character was broken, a skilled player would still be able to beat him.

It isn't all about luck. Some characters are very good at stopping hammers other can't do such to save their lives. A hammer is quite powerful. It's even better if you have the skill to hit someone and kill them while they're using one. It's even better if you can learn to dodge such attempts. It's not all luck when dealing with items. There is quite a bit of skill and experience involved with their usage.

See, THIS is why cop-outs are allowed in the competitive gaming business. Making a character intentionally broken and then setting him loose is NOT an option, Bane.

Hammers actually seem to be detrimental, IMO. They slow down your movement rate, they limit your ability to jump (I think the jump height was cut in half, and you couldn't double jump) They can hit really hard, but you can't hit what outruns you.

Step 1: Get the best item.

Step 2: Wait until the enemy exposes himself.

Step 3: Use.

...Yeah. Really strategic. The best items are too good to consider in an analysis, dirty, and you can't take the luck factor seriously without getting laughed off of any serious analysis. If I have a mirror match against an inferior player, but the player brings me down to my last stock from full due to three starmen in a row before I kill him without losing any %, is my opponent a nearly equal player in skill to me?

Of course not. He got lucky. Therefore, it makes no sense to take something that can let a disastrous player win over a good player into account when comparing characters.

Problem is, in most stages, you can lock characters because of cramped corners. So being outrun is not a problem, since the enemy is still going to get smacked and K. O.'ed.

I don't know about brawl, but melee had a ton of stages where there were multiple levels to the battlefield (such as Hyrule Temple) so you could just keep moving. And even a stage like the pokemon stadium could help you escape the hammer. Jump off the edge, (preferably use this as link, young link, or samus) and use the Z button to grab onto the edge. Well, your point is like saying "Hey, my 3.X monk scored twenty critical hits last session! He's much better than the wizard!", though (probably) less exaggerated. the only way they can get me is if they jump off the stage after me, which is suicide if they try to attack me. As soon as the hammer rage finishes, I hit jump and get propelled WAAAY up high in the air, out of their reach, direct my fall to the center of the stage, then start beating faces in. even if there are multiple players, I'm pretty much safe. They have to jump directly off the edge, and hit me. Pokemon stadium in melee doesn't really have anything you can land on to get back onstage, so they eventually gave up when I did that and just bashed each other around.

Since I don't have the time to look for an original vid right now, this'll have to do. Brawl+, how to counter that strategy. Starts at 1:50, then last until 1:56. ZSS gains the advantage by making sure Sheik can't come back and cause havoc in a tradeoff. Given Melee's physics, it should be easy to do something like that AND come back.

You have to properly direct your fall. Also, I like to play 4v4, so generally hammer-boy is too busy fighting off anyone that survived his onslaught to deal with me. But mainly, you just gotta direct the fall properly. It's a tactic that you have to refine and practice a lot before it becomes viable. I had a LOT of free time.

Armisael, You're kinda turning into a Stop having Fun Guy in this conversation.

Do you always pick Metaknight, because he's the best?

If I pick Wolf, do you automatically pick someone who has an advantage over him?

Do you actually intentionally stay out of four-way brawls for extended periods of time, while playing casually, with friends?

Do you whine about "item-screw" when the hammer drops beside one of your opponents, or a smash ball appears in a place you cannot hope to reach first, and you die because of it?

Do you mock people (friends or others) who use "bad" characters like captain falcon or bowser? Do you gloat if/when you beat them? Are the words "I told you so" involved in any way?

No, depends on if I'm maining someone who can beat him, yes because it is both a good strategy and contributes to everyone else having fun (if everyone else is brawling up close and I have Fox's blaster, why am I going to skip on such an opportunity to rack up the damage?), no (unless I was running a character comparison, but I'd have turned items off except for Smash Balls if that was the case), and finally...

...stop asking questions like that. It makes YOU look like an ass, not me. Honestly, what kind of player do you think I am? I enjoy playing strong characters, but that doesn't mean I'm going to gloat and mock everyone else (unless I came back from legitimately being down 10 stocks and won over everyone else or something :P). Because people like to dismiss it offhand to support their own inconsequential anecdotical experience, and it gets on my nerves. I've no problem when someone argues with good points, but when someone says "it's not the case where I play, engine be damned!", it gets kind of ridiculous.

...stop asking questions like that. It makes YOU look like an ass, not me. Honestly, what kind of player do you think I am? I enjoy playing strong characters, but that doesn't mean I'm going to gloat and mock everyone else (unless I came back from legitimately being down 10 stocks and won over everyone else or something :P). Seriously, D_S, don't be ridiculous.

This, after two and a half pages of "you're wrong, I'm right, and I have the math to back it up!" the worst example of which being when Escher noted that Captain Falcon tends to get a lot of KOs and that he though Captain Falcon was "fine" you responded with:

*Sigh*

I really don't want to go through mathematical analysis and comparisons again after the last result was just stubbornness, so just trust me here: Falcon BLOWS.
His Knee of Justice AND his comboability, both of which he lived for, were nerfed to oblivion. His one strength is dancing, but dancing isn't good enough when everyone else can counter it. He doesn't even have the speed advantage, which further hurts him.

Yes, you're probably right. However, people are still going to disagree with you, based on personal preference and personal experience. No, this does not give you a right to be abrasive or condescending. Escher himself managed to disagree with you without doing either.

Oh, and I'd like a real answer to my second question. Saying "it depends" and then not stating what factors your decision depends on is just a neat little way of dodging the question.

Finally, on a more lighthearted note; while the "Smash Community" may call the Cap's forward air attack the "knee of justice", my friends and I always called it "electric..." (said while jumping at the enemy) "KNEECAP!!!" (as it connects and probably kills someone). Picture it said in Captain Falcon's voice.

Maining is focusing on a character to learn his tricks. Most people pick two or three then specialize on them, whipping one out to counter particular strategies that thrash their other characters. So yeah, I DID give you the factors: if one of the characters I'm fooling around with is a counterpick to your character, I might switch to him/her. That doesn't mean I'm automatically switching to Sheik if you're using Wolf just because she has a 90-10 matchup. If I'm trying Mario and you're playing Ness, though, why wouldn't I go for it to see if I CAN indeed do as well as I'm "supposed" to do, though?

And yes, I was unnecessarily abrasive. I was coming off of TWO arguments in which the results were stubbornness, so I didn't feel like jumping right into a third one and investing any effort in my responses. Sorry, guys.

See, THIS is why cop-outs are allowed in the competitive gaming business. Making a character intentionally broken and then setting him loose is NOT an option, Bane.

If you're talking about ST Akuma, he's banned by Capcom itself. If you're talking about ANY other Akumas...he's legal, and for good reason. Even HD remix's Akuma, which is unintentionally broken. :P

Y'know, I always (really always) play a Marth. Not Link, not Ike, not Meta Knig- well, maybe Meta Knight and Pit once or twice, before unlocking Marth.

Mostly I abuse the Counter, then combine with an upwards Smash Attack. Or twenty.

Yeah, I've heard of fighting fair and I want no part in it.

Oh, and Samus/Pikachu. IT WAS IN THE STORY MODE! YOU ALL SAW IT!

Lord, no. SSB just... I dunno. Isn't a fighting game.

"RANDOM OUT-OF-NOWHERE EXPLOSION, GAME, SET, AND MATCH" is a bit of a meme in my group.

EDIT: Also.

That's the sickest crack shipping I've ever seen.

Yeah, to be a true fighting game, it would require:

"SPECIAL ATTACK! SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM! PERFECT VICTORY!"

:D

PS: I've heard SSB described as a "Mascot Fighter", but I personally prefer "Party Fighter".

Well, the whole thing is, of course, personal opinion wrapped up in a humorous way. It seems many of the things he found "unmanly" were things that he probably personally dislikes, like how Olimar's pikmen, the unique characteristic that actually makes him different than the other characters, are apparently "not manly". He seems to think that "manly" characters like Ganon should be allowed to fight at full power, but that characters like Ice Climbers should fight at a handycap or are not "manly". It's likely that he has simply had bad experiences with "teamup" characters.

He is right though. Jigglypuff is the most manly character in the game.

I play Bowser. He's heavy and all which in Brawl means something. Smash Bors Brawl is to Smash Bros Melee what 4th is to 3.5. Or at least that's the impression that I've been put under when talking to my more savy Smash Bros friends. After playing so much of Brawl its not easy adjusting to melee. I've been told in ways there is more finese in Melee that is achiveable but in the end fast characters are the way to go.

Smash Bors Brawl is to Smash Bros Melee what 4th is to 3.5.

That description, while neither positive nor negative in it's context, is just inaccurate. I can see what you meant, but I don't think that is a good example.

A better one would be Brawl is to Melee as Pathfinder is to 3.5.

4th edition is significantly different than 3.5, whereas Pathfinder is mostly the same, with just some adaptations and expanded concepts.

I play Lucas. A lot. He's cheap as , but oh-so-much fun to play as, especially his Back Kick Mid-Air Meteor Smash. :D DK is hella awesome, too, and there's nothing I love more than using a B move that charges something or blows something up with a "PAUNCH!" effect attached; having a Charge move that also gives a good "PAUNCH!" is like winning the Lottery during sex. :D:D

Also play DeDeDe, but only in actual Brawls, though, 'cause he's kinda boring in 1-on-1 fights.

I play Ike.

He has a big sword and aether looks sweet.

GOD, they made him such a ***. "I fight for my friends." Totally unnecessary.

Okay- I'm just poking some fun here, but this is the list of what each of the characters say for their Final Smashes. Some have no verbal somatics, like: Olimar, Ganondorf, Peach, Luigi (Hard to understand what he says), King Dedede, Marth (He speaks in an asian language, so it's hard for me to understand...), Bowser, Mr. Game & Watch, Ice Climbers, Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Kirby, ROB, Diddy Kong (He's a monkey!).

Mario: Oh, yeah... HEYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Link: Hmmm... EEEYYYYAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Toon Link: Hoh... TEYYAAAAA!!!

Wario: EEWAAAHOOO!!!

Zelda: Haa... HAAAAA!!!

Sheik: Hooo... HUUUUUUUH!!!

Yoshi: UWHOA!!!

Pit: Battle Troops- MOVE OOUUT!!!

Lucario: Watch the Power of Aura! HHOOOOOOOOOORRRRRAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Captain Falcon: C'mon! BLUE FALCON!!!

Fox: LANDMASTER!!!

Falco: Personally, I'd prefer the END!!!

Wolf: We're gonna have fun with this thing!!!

Meta Knight: Know my Power!!! -or- BEHOLD!

Sonic: Now, I'll Show You!!! ERRRRAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Snake: It's Show Time!!!

Pokemon Trainer: Take this- TRIPLE FINISH!!! It's super effective!

Jigglypuff: JIGGLYYYYYY!!!

Pikachu: PikA- CHUUUUUUUUUU!!!

Ike: Great AETHERRRR!!!

Ness & Lucas: PK STARSTORRMMM!!!

Donkey Kong: Ready- GOOO!!!
