It's snowing right now as I type this. We have ~2-3 feet of snow here in Martinsburg WV and it's still snowing. I moved from Maine to get away from this ~16-17 years ago. In my opinion, the word "snow" should be relagated to the four letter word ban list.

Don't mind me, this is just a rant.Smile

Boowhoo!

Damn Yanks think that they actually know what snow is! 2-3 feet? That's pocket change where I'm from. Course, I grew up with snow, so I love it. Biased much?

Don't forget that I said that I was originally from Maine. I grew up in Howland which is ~30 miles north of Bangor. I remember when I was in high school on a wrestling trip to Madawasca (the northern-most town in Maine) travelling by snow banks almost taller than the bus we rode in. So I do know snow.

P.S. on a side note, our wrestling coach's name was Mr. Snow.

it's -10C (14F for you silly Yanks) and oddly enough, though we live in the supposedly perma-snow canada in our electric igloos, we don't get much snow that sticks here. we get a little bit, it warms up a little bit, it leaves. repeat.

In the U.S. a lot of people from the south call people from the north "Northerners" and "Yankees". Up here, we just call ourselves "Americans". I attribute this to the fact that many people in the south are obsessed with a war that ended before their great-great-grandparents were born.

Yeah, the wannabe Confeds are oppose to being labeled a Yankee...

As for the snow, normally I wouldn't care if my LeSabre was operating smoothly. Being that the brakes are deteriorating, I have to drive extra carefully to avoid colliding with traffic. Usually I just drive rationally through the snow while everone else is either insane (due to believing 4-wheel drive means "drive through snow like it wasn't there") or blubbering babies.

People from Massachusetts are opposed to being called Yankees because Yankees Suck! Go Sox! (I don't care about baseball, but hating New York is so much fun.)

But you Americans have been calling yourselves Yanks since WWII (at least) without making the distinction. Example from popular songs of the day: "When the Yanks raise the Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle..."

Just sayin' is all. For us outside your borders, this kind of thing can make it all very confusing.

Perhaps the majority of Americans don't mind/care about being called Yankees (unless they hate New York as Escef had mentioned). The rebels are a minority here (considering their side lost the civil war); I am sure they would change the words of songs/phrases that use the word Yank and words they associate with Yank. (Edit) Unless it was meant for an insult to the union/northerners.

Attributed to E.B. White:
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.

The term Yankee has evolved in meaning greatly over the past. It has frequently been used in a derogatory fashion; not just by southerners to their northern bretheren, but also by citizens of other countries referring to any or all citizens of the United States. An interesting article, though take with the grain of salt necessary for its source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee

Same thing goes for WV, at least in the eastern panhandle area. Even a little bit of snow causes the schools to shut down. Where I grew up (Howland, ME), it would take at least 6 inches or more to shut down the schools. My father was superintendent of SAD 31 (a district of 8 towns) and he personally went out and drove around to check the status of the roads.

It's not so bad where I'm at (Northeast-ish).  People still drive like idiots (constantly braking in snow does not a safe driver make), but they also still drive better than Virginians do even in the summer.  Worst.  Drivers.  Ever.

I think I saw a Virginian (with Ohio license plates but that's not the point) driving in the snow today. What a load of ... I get stuck behind this namby-pamby whose going around thirty-something in a fifty-five (mph for you metric folk) speed zone. I had to wait in a left turn lane because this slow bugger took too long and caused the light to change before I could turn. I was close to catching up to this wuss but yet another traffic-light stops me.

When the revolution begins, the first meatbags on the list are those that shouldn't drive in the snow...

I've only had the misfortune of driving through VA in the late spring/early summer.  Two lanes through Richmond.  They think there's six.  And they rubberneck worse than I've ever seen.  One tiny fender bender on the other side of the divided highway and everyone on my side slows to 5mph.  Yeah.  Morons.

Former Michigan resident here, just moved to sunny Tennessee a couple months ago.  Moved into my new apartment in December to beautiful 55 degree wather.  But of course it couldn't last.  Unusual amounts of snow here (according to the natives anyway) and everything closes when they get more than an inch (wimps!).  Meanwhile MI is getting snow by the foot.  I moved just in time.

I see it as three options:

-Out maneuver emergency vehicles to get to work
-Spend the night in the "slammer"
-Stay home

I can't out maneuver anyone (unless it is a Virginian) with my big lumbering sedan. If I tried it will be like I'm at an ice capade. Taking a trip to jail and not collecting my two-hundred dollars doesn't appeal to me. Staying home sounds logical out of those three.

Being that I was born & raised in Maine, I can outmaneuver most everybody here in WV, except for those idiots who think they can outmaneuver me. Never argue with an idiot. Just let them have their way. For example, in today's paper, a couple of crooks trying to get away from the scene of the crime plowed right into a snow bank and got caught. They thought they could outmaneuver the police. They rolled a natural 1 on a d20 for their DEX roll.
