| #1KillerGMMar 05, 2010 23:13:51 | The local gaming store here had the PHB3 on sale today (and today only!), so I picked up a copy, and was disappointed in no Shadow power source. I was under the impression, from the Dragon magazines, that the Assassin would be a Shadow Power Source class in the PHB3. Now, I don't keep up with the boards stuff, so please inform me! Thanks, OTTers! :D |

| #4KillerGMMar 05, 2010 23:35:03 | Assassin is DDI exclusive Wow, that's lame. I thought it was an exclusive preview of the class. ![]() I am disappointed. |
| #5Ragnar_LodbrokMar 05, 2010 23:35:56 | Assassin is DDI exclusive They had Assassin as DDI exclusive (like the revenant) to get more people signed up for DDI. Psion (Psionic Controller) Battlemind (Psionic Defender) Monk (Psionic Striker) Ardent (Psionc Leader) Seeker (Primal Controller focusing on ranged weapons) Runepriest (Divine Leader) |

| #9KillerGMMar 06, 2010 13:22:30 | Yup, like I said, it was a special thing at the local gaming store - one day only!! Apparently, WotC had a special deal with them to sell it yesterday. *shrug* After looking at it last night, there are things that are really cool, and things that I'm "meh" about. I've never been a fan of psionics, so none of the psionic classes really hold any interest for me. They're interesting mechanically (using Power Points to augment at-wills into encounters), but I just dislike psionic flavor. The Runepriest and Seeker, however, are really cool. My husband and I have been looking for a rune-based class for a long time. A Minotaur Runepriest will be my next character in a "normal" game. My husband and I are going to run Epic level games for each other, and we'll both have 2 characters. I'll be playing a Minotaur Warden (because I've been designing her for a while), and my second character will be a Wilden Seeker, because they're so cool!! I was dubious about the Seeker, but it's actually really cool! I like the races, too. The Minotaur lost its ability to use oversized weapons, but gets an extra healing surge and other stuff, which is OK with me. Overall, it's a neat book. My husband thought there was going to be a whole slew of Shadow power source characters, so he was disappointed, but after looking at it, he liked it. Oh, the races all get +2 to one, and then +2 to one of two others, just like the Changeling in Eberron. Minotaur (+2 Str, +2 Con or Wis), Wilden (+2 Wis, +2 Con or Dex). I don't remember the other two. :P So, I'm ok with that. I haven't seen anything about retconning the other races (as was being discussed in that other thread). The skill powers are cool, too! My only problem is that the 2nd-level Athletics power is exactly the Barbarian 2nd-level utility power (jump with +5 bonus, can jump as far as the check), but it's still neat. The Hybrid rules are ... complicated, but interesting. They don't hold a lot for me, just because I prefer to be more focused in my characters. There are some good feats in there - I like the Versatile Expertise for characters that use weapons and implements (like a Bard's Songbow, or a Warlock's dagger, or a staff). And the Superior Implements are freaking cool!! I like that there is an option for spellcasters to get better versions of their implements. My husband is already planning to retrain one of his feats to get a staff that is thunder/lightning focused because it's just so in tune with what he was playing - it's actually something he was trying to find in a magic staff, but couldn't find, which I think is great! So, all in all, it's an exciting book. The artwork is fantastic for the most part. There are a couple William O'Connor pieces with his cleavage line which annoy me, but that's nothing new, and his other work is awesome (the Ardent piece is fantastic). And there's a piece with chainmail thigh-highs held up with a garter. ![]() However, there are so many more awesome pictures in the book! |
| #10EscherEnigmaMar 06, 2010 14:37:59 | And there's a piece with chainmail thigh-highs held up with a garter. That... sounds pretty bad to me. And then my SO cracked up at the description. |
| #11KillerGMMar 06, 2010 14:42:31 | And there's a piece with chainmail thigh-highs held up with a garter. It's not a big picture, but it was stupid enough for me to notice. Her "skirt" will also fall off once she moves from the position she's in. It is (IMO) the worst pic in the book in terms of stupidly sexualized things, but it's far and away better than a lot of things. ![]() |
| #12toastedamphibianMar 06, 2010 14:45:08 | And there's a piece with chainmail thigh-highs held up with a garter. ... Seems like that would need to be quite tight. Circulation problems imminent. |

I haven't seen anything about retconning the other races (as was being discussed in that other thread). Hmm. I had wondered if it was in there. Thanks! Now we just gotta see what they do with the other races (if anything). Interesting. The Hybrid rules are ... complicated, but interesting. They don't hold a lot for me, just because I prefer to be more focused in my characters. I wonder how different (if at all) they are from the playtest. I'm still runnin' a Hybrid under those rules. For me, Hybrid is the funnest thing in 4e. It allows you to really vary your character and do some neat stuff with the whole role idea. Wizard as a Controller? Not me, though I still kinda can. ;) Anyhoo, I wont ask for any kind of list of stuff, I'm more just commenting to comment. Oh, do they have the rules listed for more than just PH1 classes? I know a few of the newer ones were missing so I'm a li'l curious. |

Though I ain't even sure of that. The members of my crew that liked DS aren't all that excited about a 4e version of it and pretty much the entire group is getting tired of 4e. So I have no idea what we're gonna do. Heh. Anyhoo, thanks for the info! ![]() |
| #16lhockeeMar 09, 2010 10:48:03 | Don't worry about the Assassin or the Revenant, each will come to paper in one form or another eventually. WotC can say anything they wish, but if they know that either of those two "unique D&DI" articles will bring in more money for hardcover, then you bet yer ass that they'll release a hardcover copy eventually. If you feel like waiting that is. ![]() |
