[Gaymercon]

So apparently they met their kickstarter goal really fast, so this is gonna be a thing.  Since it'll only be a few hours away, I think I'll go next year.  Should be interestin', y'know?

Anyway, figured there was enough cross-over 'tween table-top gamers and video gamers that this might interest people.

Seems like a bad idea to me, I mean whats next? A gaminig convention for only straight people? One for only Black people? One for only Whatever-whatevers!?

I dunno, I guess it has something to do with how accessible the world is these days, with the internet and all, and all this talk of a 'global economy', people want something to belong to that makes them feel unique or whatever, unfortunatly for me though as a white straight male I couldnt have something like that with out being called racist or sexist or a homophobe or whatever, maybe thats why im against the idea, im just jelous.

Exactly.
Imagine the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments if there were a national Christian gamer day!
Can you imagine the uproar and rancor that would be generated by such a day?

Hey now! Thats actually a great idea! Especially with D&D getting a bad rap about summoning devils and all. I remember all that hoopla back in the 80s with people talking about how the D&D books contained actual rituals to summon demons, which just made me think that obviously those people never bothered to look at a D&D book, or never bothered to look at an actual ritual used to summon demons, quite possibly both.

"only for"?  Where did you get that idea?  They specifically say no one will be excluded (they just wont' be catered to) and it's not like you're gonna have a Calvin Klein model cup your balls when you enter and ask if you're aroused.

... do you feel the same about gay bars and dance clubs?  What about Gay-Straight-Alliances (GSA)?  Parents and Friends of Gays and Lesbians (PFLAG)?

If not, why?  Why are those okay for gay people to make a space for themselves (that's still welcoming, if not catering, to straight people) but when you make it a con it's suddenly bad?

And hell, like I've said before, if someone wants to make a straight pride, a white baseball league, or anything else like that, they're free to try.  Heck, despite the history of such things just about always being motivated by bigotry I'll even give 'em the benefit of the doubt.  But if they make their "straight pride" about how not gay they are, if they make their "white baseball league" about how inferior black culture is, and so-on... then they're doing it wrong.  If you can't take pride in yourself without tearing down someone else, then you're not taking pride, you're just being mean.

Imagine the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments if there were a national Christian gamer day!

... you mean Christmas?

But hey, go for it.  If you keep it respectful and about you (and not about not-you) then I don't see a problem.

On another note... do you guys have a problem with gay bars too?

So if you don't have a problem with gay men and women making their own space to socialize and drink (and historically community organize, though to my understanding that isn't true anymore), why have a problem with them making their own space to socialize, drink, game and talk about gaming issues that are important to them?

I dunno, I guess it the name, its got gay right in it, so I automatically feel excluded, where as gay bars ,the ones around here any way, dont come right out and say this is a gay bar, like the Stage Door downtown, I mean whats gay about a stage door?

Nope.

Also EE, Christmas isn't a gamer day dedicated to Christians. And anybody that wants to celebrate Christmas can.

My point is that for groups of people fighting against intolerance and hate, those groups (not specifically or solely the gay crowd) utilize a lot of discrimination, animosity, and intolerance in their crusade for acceptance.
Somehow, I find that... odd?

I mean, for instance, the gay crowd wants acceptance and tolerance from non-gays, that's fine and acceptable. However, why can't the gay crowd be accepting and tolerant of those people who do not believe in the gay lifestyle?
Example: The chix-fillet fiasco.

Why does everybody/ everything have to be compartmentalized?
Gays go here.
Blacks go there.
White folk go over here, unless they have blue eyes, then they go over there.
etc.
Why does every "victim group" have to have their own... everything?

Things like this separate us, not bring us closer.

*sigh*
However, I can't help but feel like I am making this a bigger deal than it really is.

Maybe I'm just jealous they don't have a "heterosexual, brown-haired, over 40 mens gaming day"...

... really?  Want me to dig up the quotes when you told me I wasn't celebrating Christmas?

... don't you think you're jumping the gun more then a little bit?  We're talking about something that's early in the planning stages for next year and so far there hasn't been any of that discrimination, animosity or intolerance.  Unless you're counting that they're not planning on catering to the straight-mindset, in which case I'd like to point out that by that definition every other con has been showing "discrimination, animosity and intolerance" towards gay people, and they've been doing it a heckuva lot longer.

I mean, for instance, the gay crowd wants acceptance and tolerance from non-gays, that's fine and acceptable. However, why can't the gay crowd be accepting and tolerant of those people who do not believe in the gay lifestyle?
Example: The chix-fillet fiasco.

... if you want to talk about Chik-Fil-A, start a thread in the group as that won't last out here.  But long story short, you have been lied to if you think it's just about acceptance and tolerance.  And again, you're jumping the gun in assuming that this is going to be intolerant.

Why does everybody/ everything have to be compartmentalized?
Gays go here.
[...]
Why does every "victim group" have to have their own... everything?

... because talking about why you want to talk about something is a first step.  But if you want to get to the second step you have to get to a place where people agree on the first one.

I mean heck... I just started a thread saying "so some people want to make a con focusing on gay issues in gaming" and my second post was defending it's right to exist.  And heck, look at Astrids.  There were people that wanted to talk about issues of women and gaming, but half the time we were having to justify to you and other the right for the place to exist at all.

Face it... if you want to talk about something that isn't of general interest, then you need to, after soliciting interest as well you can, take the conversation somewhere else.  'cause otherwise you never get past the first step.

But hey, if you want to get less high-minded, it's just common interests.  I'm not into the goth scene, but if I were, I'd probably want to go to a goth club to meet other people into the goth scene.  Is that kind of compartmentalization wrong?  Same for sports (and sports bars), bad singing (and kareoke bars), and sophistic rants about politics (and whatever bar is closests to the college campus).  And face it, if I want to get lucky on a Friday night, I'm gonna have better luck going to a gay bar then any other place.

None of that is about you, or anyone else that's "excluded" (by their own choice).  It's about people with similar interests and desires getting together.

You win this time.  The search function for these forums sucks, I can't find the WDYWTTA? thread that covers Christmas of 2010 or 2009 (I know we had the talk back before I moved...), and google doesn't pierce the group so I can't search that at all.

We can still talk about it if you want.
Maybe sometime when you are especially bored...
And I don't feel like a winner. Are you sure I actually "won" something?

Yeah I think we're all making too big of a deal of it.

Part of it I guess is that im not gay, like if someone came up to me and said hey man were startin up a straight gaming convention, id be like why? So I have much the same reaction for the gay one, but im not gay, so I dont know what its like, I guess I probably would feel a bit alienated going to a "straight" conventions, you never see two guys holding hands or something in D&D books.
