So apparently there was witness tampering and they want her to pay for investigative costs.

Again, demagogues in action. The plebs is not happy, so politicians throw a bone even if it is bad for democracy or the justice system.

The more I read, the more I think Westerners would like China's justice system. No pesky rule of law, fair trials, the presumption of innocent or reasonable doubt. Just two bullets in the head justice! F*** yeah!

And it China's system doesn't work, well mob justice is enough to convict anyone of death. Let say you just need 1k people to build a big sacrificial altar in a city. If enough people gather to build the altar, the person is guilty!

Better to send 10 innocent people to prison or the chair then let one criminal get away with it!

And if death were the penalty for every crime, then crime would drop to 1% levels or lower. Not a reasonable solution by any means...

I loved the first paragraph: "We're going to keep looking into this in order to bring closure to a whole bunch of people it doesn't affect at all, but are still mad about it."

Squirrel, this wouldn't happen to be an election year for the Sheriff of Orange County, would it?

It's possible.

If her lies are what lead to the expenditures, why shouldn't she bear some of the burden?  If you own a store that has a security device and you're constantly accidentally tripping it - causing the cops to constantly have to show up - you can be forced to pay for that.  She was found guilty of lying to them.  She did it.  Seeking reimbursement seems ok to me.  Besides, she'll be more than able to pay for it once she signs her book deal, Lifetime movie deal and completes the talk show/interview program circuit.

Nobody wants that.  Too inefficient.  Two bullets?  Hell, for the low cost of some rope and one bullet and with the use of a bridge, you can get rid of two bad apples at once.

Eh, not necessarily. After all, no one plans to get caught.
Unless they want to go to jail at least.

I vote for the bridge. It's a much cheaper option and we can use some of the funds designated for prisons to start fixing them up.

But you're also less likely to attempt something if the consequences are severe enough.

Yup.  Excess spendin' is bad.  This is much better than the Chinese model.  'Course we'd probably wanna suppress the fact that it's the Nazi model that we'd be adopting.

Unless the scope is so wide that you're likely to get nailed for something eventually. If the punishment for jaywalking is death then might as well run drugs. Chances are you're going to get shot for something stupid, so why not?

Maybe.  See, jaywalking and running drugs are sufficiently different that most people wouldn't find that the next step.  In any event, it'd be a hellish world to live in.

Why must yo ruin everything? Now, because of you, bridges will lack proper repairs due to lack of funding. They will collapse as people drive over them, killing trillions. Our infrastructure will collapse. All the jobs in the U.S. will have to be shipped over to China because they have bridges, and we will be under communist rule. You are so anti-American.

That's why we suppress that knowledge!  We'll just do the American thing and call it the American model!  Nobody will know!  And, if they do, they'll have a date with a bridge and a buddy soon enough.  ;)

Yeah, most people wouldn't consider it to be the next step, but as far as crime deterrence goes making the punishment for everything too harsh actually sends crime up because the idea of punishment looses meaning. The risk shoots up, might as well up the reward.

It's the same mentality that would make you say "well, I'm already coming home 45 minutes past curfew, punishment isn't going to get any worse, might as well make it three hours late."

If you're going to take 20$ from the till you take 20$. If you're going to take 500$ from the till you might as well take the whole damn thing.
