May 03, 2009 20:56:35 I'm currently working on a samurai class for 4.0 but debating on using str or dex for its attacks. i say dex cause samurai were supose to be quick, and powerful, but str cause well its basic. what do you think?

May 04, 2009 1:02:14 I would say that this really depends on the style of samurai you're thinking of. If they are to wield a single katana, then Strength would make more sense than Dexterity. If they wield katana in one hand and wakizachi in the other, then either Dexterity or Strength would make equal sense. Without knowing more about your concept, I really can't strongly recommend either, though.

I would say that this really depends on the style of samurai you're thinking of.

This. Between historically accurate, the historically romanticized, traditional Japanese fantasy, modern pop-culture (re)interpretations, and every genre of anime under the sun, there are dozens, if not more, flavors of "Samurai". And if you're going for historical or traditional fantasy, it also helps a lot to pin-point which era you are referring to as well, as the samurai fighting styles, code of honor, and related mythology changed with the times.

Jun 03, 2009 10:20:43 You could build the samurai like a V class, and have one build focus on Naginata, No-Dachi, Great-Armored Samurai in demon masks and clan banners on heir backs and have those powers work off Strength, and then another build focus on the wandering, kimono wearing, Iaijutsu-master, quicker-than-the-eye samurai and have those powers work of Dexterity

Charisma would make a good secondary for the armored samurai, using Kiai shouts to indimitate foes and rally allies, and Wisdom would make a good secondary for the iaijutsu master samurai, to maintain his inner tranquility that translates into the perfect strike.

The O-Yoroi O-katana Samurai is best represented by the Fighter, it could also wield a polearm.
The Nittou Samurai Striker works well from the Ranger.
As can the Archer Samurai.

All that's left is the so-called "iaijutsu" samurai.
...
To that I say...Just take Quick Draw and Improved Initiative.
