When I first started playing D&D with my daughter a couple of years ago, I leaned heavily on my 1.0 AD&D books and materials, but now we're fully 4e (against her wishes - she digs the 3.x books and classes). I created a homebrew world for us using Tyrantis (the pirate city-state) because I had lent out my CSotIO materials to a friend's teenaged son. Well now I've got the d20 version of the CSotIO book and have decided to start converting parts to 4e to use as a guidebook for a big city with a rich set of descriptions of people, places, and myriad political and social mechanizations.

Am I crazy? Has anyone else done something like this? There's over 350 locations so I'm not planning on converting the whole book, but it just seems like it's got tons of creative content that I can lean on for what I'm hoping will become bi-weekly sessions at our local gaming store this summer. The Judges Guild material has a tendency to be a little more non-politically-correct, and since my daughter is 10 we're not going to go too much into the sexy grownup kind of stuff. But the fact that it's an evil city where slavery is allowed, makes it a little different than the watered-down Tyrantis I was working with last year (where in OUR world, a retired paladin had evicted the pirates from the city, and are now running a blockade from the sea).

Are you crazy? Perhaps! I would just convert what I need, maybe even on-the-fly. Just mine it for ideas. It's so easy to "reskin" monsters in 4E, that I wouldn't worry about writing up stat blocks for stuff.

You might also look at Ptolus, if you want a giant city setting. It's excellent (for 3.5E). You can get the entire book in PDF forum relatively cheaply (at least, there was a recent sale).

well the first day's adventure went well on sunday.
1) the party did a good job of teamwork catching a bunch of rats escaped from an exotic pet store, along with the guard-snake to whom they were to be fed.
2) the party did not get side-tracked long by the bard with a speech impediment (named "Spitney" Beers), although the cleric had to heal him before the city guards came in time to witness a senseless murder
3) most members joined the mercenary's guild and
4) they smartly chose not to engage in battle the gnoll scout party they encountered
5) they had a successful 1 day & 1 night's journey from the city heading south to fight Orcs

they are of course in no way, shape, or form ready to fight orcs, being first level, but they've earned a couple hundred XP and will soon meet some more appropriate creatures to kill, capture, parlay, or evade. I expect they'll come crawling back to the city in another session or two, giving me more time to prepare the city with more interesting clues.
