What would you think about updating the Marvel Super Heroes Game using the 4th edition D&D mechanics?
Charcter classes could be:
Mutants
Tech
Magic

I was just thinking that the system would work real well.
What do you think?

I think it could work pretty well. You could also add Cosmic, Science and Natural to your power sources/character classes, but I think using these general ideas for sources would be better.

I'm going to have to go with no, why? Because the Advanced Marvel Super heroes games system was nothing like D&D. For one thing you only had percentile dice. The stats were Fighting, Agility, Strength, Endurance,Reason,Intuition, and Psyche. Not really much of fit and the abily to hit a target was based on either fighting or agility and you had to use a table find out how you hit a specific target.

well it would have to be updated to the new ability scores and maybe expanded for higher strength or high int characters

A higher stregnth in AMSH was called Unearthly(100) which translated roughly to lifting 100 tons give or take a few tons. Reason was there version of Intelligence but in the purest sense. Intuition and Psyche rounded out ones mental ability. Also Hit points were based on adding up ones Ablilty score So Thor for instance had Fighting Unearthly (100), Agility Excellent(20),Strength Unearthly(100) Endurance Unearthly(100) so his hit points were 320. Reason, Intuition and Psyche made up your karma which you could use to adjust Dice rolls to either hit someone or evade an attack For example Profesor X Reason was Incredible(40) Intuition Amazing (50) and Psyche Monstrous (75) giving him 165 Karma points.

Yes I have the original game, but ability scores would have to be adjusted for superheroes in the new D&D 4e

I'd love to see a 4e Modern supers game. And I applaud you for working on it yourself.

P.S.: A friendly word of advice, don't post that talk on the Modern board. Anyone who mentions 4e Modern there gets jumped by certain parties who have no problem with using arguments that are circular and make no sense.

This was even said about people posting 4e stuff on the modern board:

They are right
they belong in a different forum than the d20Modern board

Then what you are saying is that you do not want the same game at all from AMSH you want to create an entirely new game based on the Hasbor's D&D game mechanics which is not "updating the Marvel Super Heroes Game". Also I have no idea how you would incorporate levels with existing characters. The original game didn't have levels. If I were going to fashion a new MSRPG, Shadowruns Archtypes seems to be a better fit since your character does not go up in levels and does not require experience points. Also magic in the MU is nothing like the D&D version at all making it even trickier if not down right impossible.

I LOVE the idea, I think 4e is very well suited to the marvel universe and a game like that would be totally AWESOME I have some ideas:

You should have more stat points and the standard array should be: 10, 13, 15, 15, 16, and 19.

The classes should be:
Mutant
Tech
Natural
Magic
Animal Powers (spider man, the fly, black cat, ect.)

Also the rules should be adjusted so that the heroic-tier feels like the paragon-tier, the paragon-tier feels like the epic-tier, and the epic-tier feels like being a god.

The Gamma World system would be better.

AND limit the characters to 10th Level.

Sorry!
I meant the one that hasn't come out yet.
The one that will be using 4ED mechanics.
Will be compatable.
Where all kinds of X-men types are part of the basic characters generation.

Sorry again for the misunderstanding.

Or are you saying that you seen the October Release already?

I think if you're going for a 4e Superheroes game, the best source to build from would be Mutants & Masterminds.

I know it is way past it's date . . . but in my spare time I am dabbling with application of attack and utility powers for a super hero game using the 4e/d20 mechanic.

I agree with the ability array earlier in the forum.  However, in lieu of class selection you would still choose a power source and from that source you can choose your attack and utility powers.  Pretty much, in this case, a martial-ly powered superhero can choose any 4e martial class's powers.  For examplet, for the at-wills powers my martial super hero can choose cleave (fighter), twin strike (ranger), and sly flouris (rogue).

Races would be the "archetypes" (borrowed from M&M) with most of them being modifications of a human build, but with the addition of alien, extradimensional, god, and robot having their own separate racial features.  The modifications of human are merely builds that apply ability score bumps, skill bonuses, "build" features (like racial features), and what-not.

And in there, somewhere, is a skill . . . a new one.  And applications for those listed.  I am thinking of mashing the Star Wars Saga list with the 4e list and see what happens.

If anyone wants to know more, let me know!

This is something that I've been thinking about too.  But I'm trying to use new power sources and classes that fit the genre.  I was thinking about these power sources / origins:

Inborn - the character was born with his powers.  This covers mutants as well as aliens
Training - this covers martial artists, weapons experts, and sorcerers like Dr. Strange
Gadgets - this includes powered armor, high-tech weapons, or even a magical bag of tricks
Granted - the character's powers were given to him by another, or come from an special object (usually magical or alien in origen) in his possesion
Exposure - the character has been exposed to some factor (radiological, biological, chemical, or even magical) that has changed him in such a way as to result in superpowers

What do you think?

Looking through my copy of M&M, I have to agree.
Perhaps replacing Encounter powers with Extras, and Dailys with Permanent powers?

M&M is a great game. HAven't tried the 3rd ed yet but it works very well... IF you as the GM make sure you check everything from your players... its too easy break the system.

That being said, we played around with doing a 4th ed supers game. The classes mentioned earlier on this board we used too, but we set them up as races.

Sorry in advance for the thread necromancy. We're just starting a 4E Super Hero game shamelessly stolen from 4E Gamma World. I just took the Origins and made them character Archetypes (not all, some reserved for Villains, or omitted entirely); some were renamed, but none were tweaked and powers not messed with other than some renaming. Luckily, I got that great spreadsheet that has all the Mutations text on it, so again, with some renaming and omittions; came up with Super Powers. Tweaked the character creation process and we're off and running.

Be running the first playtest this weekend, gonna let the Munchkins break the system and make the appropriate adjustments. I'm sure it's going to be a constant work in progress, but it'll be fun for a beer and pretzels night and finally have a use for all those Heroclix figures lying around.
